Chapter 8: The First Heir

The photograph remained on the screen.

A child.

A young Elena standing beside him.

And a sentence that shattered everything they thought they knew.

*THE HEIR YOU NEVER KNEW YOU LOST.*

Nobody spoke.

The boardroom was dark except for the glow from the screen.

Marcus stared at the image.

He had seen thousands of photographs throughout his life.

Family photos.

Business photos.

Magazine covers.

Memories captured in perfect moments.

But this one felt different.

Because it wasn’t showing him what he had.

It was showing him what had been stolen.

“Who is that?””

His voice barely sounded like his own.

Elena looked at the photograph.

Her face had gone pale.

“Marcus…”

“Who is he?””

She didn’t answer.

That silence was enough.

Marcus turned toward her.

“You know.””

Elena closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The room erupted.

“No.””

Marcus stepped back.

“You knew?””

“I didn’t know where he was.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

His voice cracked.

“You knew there was another child.””

Elena looked at Malik.

Then Noah.

Two sons standing in the same room.

Both watching her.

Both waiting.

“I was going to tell you.””

Marcus laughed once.

A painful sound.

“When?””

Elena looked down.

“I don’t know.””

That answer hurt more than a lie.

Malik watched Marcus carefully.

For the first time, he understood something.

His father wasn’t just discovering secrets.

He was discovering how many pieces of his own life had been taken away from him.

Noah stared at the screen.

“Who is he?””

Elena looked at him.

“The first child.””

Noah frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Elena took a breath.

“Before you.””

The words changed the entire room.

Marcus looked at her.

“Before Noah?””

“Yes.””

Malik felt a strange emptiness.

Another child.

Another secret.

Another person who had grown up without answers.

“How old would he be now?”” Marcus asked.

Elena’s eyes moved back to the photograph.

“Twenty-two.””

Marcus froze.

Four years older than Malik.

Two years older than Noah.

The first child.

The one everyone had erased.

“Who is his father?”” Adrian asked quietly.

Elena looked at him.

Nobody expected the answer.

“My father.””

Silence.

Marcus stared.

“What?””

Elena swallowed.

“Before I met you, before any of this happened…”

She touched the screen.

“I was connected to the Hale family in a way nobody knew.””

Adrian’s face changed.

“What are you saying?””

Elena looked at Marcus.

“The child was not yours.””

Marcus went still.

The words should have hurt.

But somehow, they didn’t.

Not because they didn’t matter.

Because something else mattered more.

Someone had stolen a child.

Someone had erased a life.

“Who is the father?”” Marcus asked.

Elena looked away.

“Your brother knows.””

Everyone turned.

Adrian froze.

“No.””

Marcus stared at him.

“Adrian?””

Adrian’s face became filled with regret.

“Elena…”

“Tell them.””

Adrian looked at Marcus.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then he whispered:

“The child is mine.””

The room changed.

No one spoke.

Even the security guards outside seemed to disappear.

Marcus looked between Elena and Adrian.

His brother.

The woman he loved.

A child lost twenty-two years ago.

The truth kept expanding.

Every answer created another question.

“You knew?””

Marcus’s voice was dangerously calm.

Adrian nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“How long?””

“Since the beginning.””

Marcus stared.

“You knew about your son.””

Adrian looked down.

“Yes.””

“And you let me believe I had lost everything.””

Adrian’s eyes filled with pain.

“I lost him too.””

Marcus’s anger rose.

“Don’t compare your pain to mine.””

“I’m not.””

Adrian looked at him.

“I’m telling you I know what it feels like to have someone taken from you.””

Marcus said nothing.

Because he did know.

Too well.

Malik looked at Elena.

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””

Elena’s expression broke.

“Because your grandfather found out.””

The name alone changed the atmosphere.

“The night my son was born, I learned what your grandfather was capable of.””

Marcus looked confused.

“Our father?””

Elena nodded.

“He believed the Hale family name was everything.””

She looked at Adrian.

“He told Adrian the child could never exist publicly.””

Adrian’s hands tightened.

“He wanted to control my life.””

“And mine,” Elena said.

Malik looked at the photograph.

“What happened to the child?””

Elena closed her eyes.

“That’s the part I never discovered.””

A horrible silence.

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

Marcus looked at the screen.

“But someone does.””

Everyone understood.

The person who sent the message.

The person who had been watching.

The person who knew every hidden secret.

They had the missing piece.

Hours later, the group returned to the safe house.

Nobody slept.

There were too many questions.

Too many wounds.

Malik sat outside on the porch.

The night air was cold.

He heard footsteps behind him.

Marcus.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Marcus sat beside him.

“You hate this.””

Malik looked over.

“Hate what?””

“All of this.””

Malik looked toward the trees.

“Finding out my family is bigger than I thought?””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

A small smile appeared on Malik’s face.

“That’s one way to say it.””

Marcus looked down.

“I’m sorry.””

Malik didn’t answer.

Marcus continued.

“I know I wasn’t there.””

The words were difficult for him.

“I know saying I didn’t know doesn’t fix anything.””

Malik looked at him.

“No.””

Marcus accepted it.

“But I want to know you now.””

That sentence surprised Malik.

Not because it was perfect.

Because it wasn’t.

It was simple.

Human.

“I don’t know how to do this,” Malik admitted.

Marcus looked at him.

“Neither do I.””

For the first time, Malik saw him as something other than a billionaire.

A man trying to become a father.

A man who had missed too much.

Before Malik could respond, the door opened.

Noah stood there.

He looked uncomfortable.

“I need to talk to you.””

Marcus stood.

“Me?””

Noah nodded.

Marcus followed him inside.

Malik watched.

A strange feeling moved through him.

Because for the first time, he wasn’t the only person struggling to understand Marcus.

Noah was too.

Inside the house, Noah stood across from Marcus.

“I saw the files.””

Marcus nodded.

“I know.””

“No.””

Noah looked at him.

“You don’t understand.””

Marcus waited.

Noah looked away.

“My whole life, I thought you rejected me.””

Marcus said nothing.

“My mother told me you knew about me.””

“I didn’t.””

“I know that now.””

The words surprised Marcus.

“You do?””

Noah nodded.

“Because I saw your face when you found out.””

Marcus looked down.

Noah continued.

“You looked exactly like me.””

The sentence was unexpected.

Marcus looked at him.

Noah gave a small, sad smile.

“Angry. Confused. Hurt.””

A silence passed.

“I spent years hating a man who didn’t even know I existed.””

Marcus swallowed.

“I’m sorry.””

Noah looked at him.

“Do you know what’s strange?””

“What?””

“I still want to hate you.””

Marcus said nothing.

“But I can’t.””

The honesty broke something.

Because forgiveness wasn’t happening.

Not yet.

But maybe something else was.

A beginning.

Suddenly, Adrian rushed into the room.

“We have a location.””

Everyone turned.

Marcus stood.

“For who?””

Adrian held a document.

“The first heir.””

Malik and Noah joined them.

Adrian pointed to the page.

“We found where he was last registered.””

Marcus looked.

A name appeared.

A name none of them recognized.

But the address was clear.

A private medical facility outside the city.

Malik frowned.

“Why would he be there?””

Adrian’s expression was grim.

“Because whoever hid him didn’t just erase his identity.””

He looked at Marcus.

“They erased his entire life.””

Elena covered her mouth.

“No…”

Marcus looked at the address.

“We’re going there.””

Adrian nodded.

But before they could leave, Marcus’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

He answered.

The same distorted voice spoke.

“You’re getting closer.””

Marcus’s grip tightened.

“Who are you?””

A quiet laugh.

“Someone who watched your family fall apart.””

Marcus said nothing.

The voice continued.

“You want the first heir?””

A pause.

“Then come alone.””

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“Where?””

The voice gave an address.

Marcus recognized it immediately.

An abandoned Hale property.

A place that had been closed for twenty years.

Then the voice whispered:

“Bring the truth.””

The call ended.

Malik looked at him.

“What did they say?””

Marcus stared at the phone.

Then at Elena.

Then Adrian.

His face changed.

Because he realized something.

The abandoned property wasn’t random.

It was the place where everything began.

Marcus whispered:

May you like

“That’s where my father buried his first secret.””

And somewhere in the city, someone was waiting for them to uncover it.
