Chapter 6: The Mother Who Never Left

For twelve years, Malik imagined this moment.

He imagined his mother walking through a door.

He imagined running toward her.

He imagined hearing her voice again.

He imagined finally asking the question that had haunted him every night.

Why did you leave me?

But when Elena stood in front of him, older and exhausted, the only thing Malik could feel was confusion.

Because the woman he had dreamed about finding looked terrified to see him.

Not relieved.

Not happy.

Terrified.

“Mom?””

The word escaped before he could stop it.

Elena’s eyes filled with tears.

For a moment, she looked exactly like the woman from his childhood memories.

The same gentle eyes.

The same expression when she was trying not to cry.

But she didn’t move closer.

And somehow, that hurt more than anything.

Malik took one step forward.

“You’re alive.””

Elena covered her mouth.

“I know.””

His eyes narrowed.

“You know?””

The pain in his voice made her flinch.

“You knew I was out there?””

Elena looked down.

“I always knew.””

The room went silent.

Marcus watched from the side, unable to move.

He had spent twelve years imagining what he would say if he ever saw Elena again.

Anger.

Questions.

Pain.

But seeing her alive destroyed every prepared sentence.

All he could say was:

“Elena.””

She looked at him.

And the expression on her face broke his heart.

Because she looked like someone who had spent twelve years waiting for this moment too.

“Marcus.””

His name sounded like a memory.

Like something she had whispered when nobody was listening.

“You’re alive,” he said.

A tear slipped down her cheek.

“So are you.””

Malik looked between them.

The connection was obvious.

A connection that existed before he ever knew Marcus’s name.

Before he ever knew the truth.

Before he ever knew he had a father.

But the questions were louder than the emotions.

“You let me think you were dead.””

Elena closed her eyes.

“I know.””

“You let me grow up alone.””

“I know.””

“Why?””

The word came out broken.

Elena looked at her son.

And for the first time, the fear disappeared.

Only a mother remained.

“I was trying to keep you alive.””

Malik shook his head.

“Everyone says that.””

He looked at Marcus and Adrian.

“Everyone says they’re protecting me.””

His voice cracked.

“But nobody ever tells me anything.””

Elena took a step closer.

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

Malik backed away.

“You don’t get to say sorry and make twelve years disappear.””

Elena stopped.

Because she knew.

An apology couldn’t repair a childhood.

It couldn’t bring back birthdays.

It couldn’t replace all the nights Malik waited for someone who never came.

“I know,” she whispered.

And that was somehow worse.

Because she wasn’t defending herself.

She was accepting the pain.

Marcus finally spoke.

“Why didn’t you come to me?””

Elena looked at him.

The question carried twelve years of heartbreak.

“I tried.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

“The night I disappeared, I went to Adrian because I found something.””

She looked at Adrian.

He lowered his eyes.

“I found evidence that your father’s company was involved in something dangerous.””

Marcus stared.

“Our father?””

“Yes.””

“That doesn’t explain why you didn’t call me.””

Elena’s face changed.

“Because they already knew about you.””

A cold feeling moved through Marcus.

“What?””

“They knew you loved me.””

Silence.

Elena continued.

“And they knew I was carrying your child.””

Malik looked away.

Even after everything, hearing it said aloud felt strange.

Your child.

Not a mistake.

Not a secret.

His.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Who threatened you?””

Elena looked toward the dark windows.

“The same people who are still watching us.””

Adrian spoke quietly.

“Lydia Voss.””

Elena’s expression changed.

“You know?””

Marcus looked at Adrian.

“You knew her role?””

Adrian nodded.

“She was our father’s attorney.””

Elena looked at him.

“And she still controls everything.””

Marcus frowned.

“Explain.””

Elena walked toward the desk and picked up the guardianship document.

“This.””

She touched the paper.

“This is why I disappeared.””

Malik looked confused.

“Because of this document?””

Elena nodded.

“Your grandfather had another child.””

Marcus looked at her.

“We know.””

Elena’s eyes widened slightly.

“You found the files?””

“Yes.””

She looked worried.

“Then we don’t have much time.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Who is the child?””

Elena hesitated.

And that hesitation frightened everyone.

“Tell us.””

She looked at Malik.

Then at Marcus.

“The child is connected to you.””

Marcus frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Elena’s voice dropped.

“It means your father wasn’t the only person hiding the truth.””

The room became silent.

Malik felt a strange sense of dread.

“What truth?””

Elena looked at him.

“The child they wanted erased…”

She swallowed.

“Was not your grandfather’s secret.””

Marcus stared.

“Then whose?””

Elena looked at him.

“Yours.””

Nobody spoke.

The words didn’t make sense.

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

Elena’s eyes filled with sadness.

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

Marcus stepped back.

“You’re saying I have another child?””

Elena nodded slowly.

The realization hit him.

Another child.

Another person connected to all of this.

Another life destroyed by the secrets of the Hale family.

Malik watched Marcus.

And for the first time, he saw something change.

The billionaire who controlled companies.

The man who terrified business rivals.

The man who seemed impossible to break.

Looked completely lost.

“Who is it?”” Marcus whispered.

Elena looked away.

“I don’t know where they are now.””

“Who?””

She took a breath.

“The child’s name was Noah.””

The name hung in the air.

Marcus repeated it softly.

“Noah.””

Elena nodded.

“When I discovered the truth, I realized something.””

“What?””

“They weren’t trying to hide one child.””

Her eyes moved to Malik.

“They were trying to hide both of you.””

The next morning, they moved to a secure location.

Not a hotel.

Not a mansion.

A small house Marcus owned under a private company name.

Somewhere nobody would expect him to go.

For the first time in years, Malik and Elena sat in the same room.

Mother and son.

But the distance between them felt larger than the years apart.

Elena placed a cup of tea in front of him.

“You still don’t like sugar.””

Malik looked at the cup.

A small detail.

A tiny memory.

“You remember?””

Elena smiled sadly.

“I remember everything.””

He looked at her.

“Then why weren’t you there?””

The question broke her expression.

“I wanted to be.””

“But you weren’t.””

“No.””

She looked down.

“I wasn’t.””

Malik waited.

For an excuse.

For a reason.

For something.

Elena took a deep breath.

“The night I disappeared, they gave me a choice.””

“Who?””

“People working for Lydia Voss.””

Malik’s hands tightened.

“What choice?””

Elena looked at him.

“Leave with you and never contact Marcus again…”

She paused.

“Or they would make sure Marcus lost everything.””

Malik frowned.

“That’s not enough.””

“No.””

Elena’s voice became softer.

“They also threatened you.””

The room went quiet.

“They knew where you were born. They knew your school. They knew every place I took you.””

Malik looked away.

“So you left.””

“I hid.””

“Same thing.””

Elena accepted the words.

“Maybe.””

A tear fell.

“But every day I was gone, I was trying to find a way back.””

Malik looked at her.

“Why didn’t you?””

Elena reached into her pocket.

She pulled out a small envelope.

“I did.””

She handed it to him.

Inside were dozens of letters.

All addressed to Malik.

Never sent.

“I wrote you every birthday.””

Malik stared.

“Why?””

“Because I needed to remember I was still your mother.””

The answer broke something inside him.

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

But something.

A small piece of the anger began to loosen.

Before he could speak, Marcus entered the room.

His face was tense.

“We have a problem.””

Elena immediately stood.

“What happened?””

Marcus held a tablet.

“The company board just announced an emergency meeting.””

Adrian followed behind him.

“They’re trying to remove Marcus.””

Malik looked at the screen.

The headline was already spreading.

*HALE INTERNATIONAL BOARD QUESTIONS CEO’S MENTAL STABILITY AFTER SHOCKING FAMILY REVELATION.*

Marcus looked at Elena.

“This isn’t about the company.””

She nodded.

“No.””

She understood immediately.

“They’re trying to separate us.””

Malik looked between them.

“Why?””

Elena’s expression changed.

Because she had realized something.

Something terrifying.

“They don’t want Marcus removed.””

Marcus frowned.

“Then what do they want?””

Elena looked at Malik.

At the son she had spent twelve years protecting.

Then at Marcus.

The man she had spent twelve years trying to save.

“They want you to come out of hiding.””

A cold silence followed.

Marcus understood.

“They’re using the board meeting.””

Elena nodded.

“They know you’ll go.””

Adrian looked toward the window.

“And when he does…”

Nobody finished the sentence.

Because they all knew.

The enemy wasn’t trying to destroy Marcus.

They were trying to bring him exactly where they wanted him.

Malik looked at the tablet.

The board meeting was scheduled for that evening.

And below the announcement was a name.

The person who requested the emergency vote.

A name none of them expected.

A name that made Elena whisper in fear:

“No…”

Marcus looked at the screen.

May you like

The request came from:

*Noah Hale.*
