Chapter 7: The Son They Tried to Erase
The name on the screen seemed impossible.
*Noah Hale.*
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The room felt frozen.
Marcus stared at the tablet as if the letters might rearrange themselves into something else.
Something that made sense.
But they didn’t.
Noah Hale.
His name.
His blood.
A child he never knew existed.
Malik watched Marcus carefully.
The man who had faced billion-dollar lawsuits without blinking now looked like he had forgotten how to breathe.
“Marcus?””
He didn’t answer.
Elena slowly sat down.
Her hands trembled.
“I thought he was gone.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You knew where he was?””
“No.””
“Then why are you afraid?””
Elena looked at the screen.
“Because if Noah is alive, it means they found him too.””
Adrian walked closer.
“Who?””
Elena looked at him.
“The people who destroyed our family.””
A sharp silence followed.
Marcus grabbed the tablet.
“When was this request filed?””
“Three hours ago,” Adrian said.
“And nobody told me?””
“They wanted it to surprise you.””
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“Then they know we’re watching.””
Malik stood.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at him.
“If Noah is your son…”
Marcus looked over.
“Yes.””
“Then why would he try to remove you?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Because he had been asking himself the same question.
The image of another child entered his mind.
A child who grew up without him.
A child who might hate him.
A child who might believe the same lie Malik had believed.
That Marcus Hale never cared.
Elena spoke quietly.
“Because Noah doesn’t know the truth.””
Marcus looked at her.
“What do you mean?””
“He knows what they told him.””
“And what did they tell him?””
Elena looked away.
“That you abandoned him.””
The words cut through the room.
Malik noticed Marcus’s reaction.
Because it was the same pain he had felt.
The same wound.
Two children.
Two lives.
Both damaged by the same lie.
The emergency board meeting was held at Hale International headquarters.
The building was surrounded by reporters before Marcus even arrived.
Cameras flashed.
Questions shouted.
“Mr. Hale, is the young man claiming to be your son legitimate?””
“Are you stepping down as CEO?””
“Did you hide your family history from investors?””
Marcus walked through the crowd without answering.
But this time, he wasn’t alone.
Malik walked beside him.
Elena and Adrian followed behind.
The world was watching.
And for the first time, Marcus didn’t care about protecting his image.
He cared about protecting his family.
Inside the boardroom, twelve executives sat around the long glass table.
At the head of the room was a man Malik had never seen before.
A man around his age.
Dark hair.
Sharp eyes.
A calm expression.
Noah.
Malik stopped when he saw him.
Because despite everything, he understood immediately.
They were brothers.
Not because someone told him.
Because something about Noah felt familiar.
The same guarded expression.
The same anger hidden behind silence.
Noah looked at Marcus.
“Hello, Father.””
Marcus froze.
Not because of the word.
Because of the way Noah said it.
Not with love.
With accusation.
“Noah.””
The young man smiled slightly.
“So you do know my name.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“I didn’t know—”
“No.””
Noah raised a hand.
“You didn’t.””
The room went silent.
Noah looked around.
“Everyone here knows the story.””
He pointed at Marcus.
“The great Marcus Hale.””
The billionaire.
The genius.
The man who built an empire.
“And nobody knows the truth.””
Malik watched him.
Because he recognized that anger.
It was the same anger he carried for years.
“Noah,” Marcus said quietly.
“I swear I never knew.””
Noah laughed.
A cold laugh.
“Of course you didn’t.””
His eyes moved to Malik.
Then back to Marcus.
“You never knew about me.””
Malik felt the words.
Because they were true.
But not in the way Noah believed.
Marcus looked devastated.
“I searched for Elena.””
Noah’s expression changed.
“Elena?””
“Yes.””
“My mother.””
The room became quiet.
Marcus looked at him.
“She’s alive.””
Noah’s face changed.
For one second.
Only one.
Hope appeared.
Then disappeared.
“No.””
Marcus frowned.
“What?””
“No.””
Noah shook his head.
“You don’t get to bring her back now.””
Malik stepped forward.
“She’s here.””
Noah looked at him.
Malik didn’t know why, but he felt like he had to say it.
“She’s alive.””
Noah stared.
Then he looked away.
“You’re lying.””
“I’m not.””
“Who are you?””
The question hung between them.
Malik hesitated.
Then answered.
“Malik.””
Noah’s expression changed slightly.
“Malik?””
Marcus stepped closer.
“He’s my son.””
The room went completely silent.
Noah looked at Marcus.
Then at Malik.
A strange emotion crossed his face.
Shock.
Confusion.
Pain.
“You had another son.””
Marcus swallowed.
“Yes.””
Noah smiled bitterly.
“So that’s why.””
Malik frowned.
“Why what?””
Noah looked at him.
“Why she chose you.””
The words confused Malik.
“What?””
Noah’s voice became colder.
“My mother always said my father was searching for someone else.””
Marcus looked confused.
“What are you talking about?””
Noah looked at him.
“She told me you didn’t want me.””
The room went silent.
Marcus looked like someone had hit him.
“No.””
Noah shook his head.
“She said you built an empire because you didn’t need a family.””
“That’s not true.””
“How would I know?””
Noah’s voice cracked.
“You weren’t there.””
Marcus had no answer.
Because Noah was right.
He wasn’t there.
Just like he wasn’t there for Malik.
The truth was painful because it didn’t matter that he had been lied to.
His children had still suffered.
The meeting continued.
The board members watched silently.
They weren’t interested in family pain.
They were interested in power.
One executive stood.
“Mr. Hale, regardless of personal circumstances, the company requires stability.””
Marcus looked at him.
“You mean control.””
The man didn’t respond.
Noah stepped forward.
“I requested this meeting because the company needs new leadership.””
Marcus stared at him.
“You want my position?””
Noah looked down.
Then back up.
“I want the truth.””
The answer surprised everyone.
Noah continued.
“Before I remove you, I want the world to know what happened.””
Marcus frowned.
“What?””
Noah looked toward the large screen behind him.
A file appeared.
Old documents.
Photos.
Records.
Malik’s stomach tightened.
Because he recognized the handwriting.
His mother’s.
“Noah,” Elena whispered from the doorway.
Everyone turned.
She stood there.
Alive.
Real.
Noah froze.
For several seconds, he didn’t move.
The anger disappeared.
The confidence disappeared.
The young man who had walked into the room ready for war suddenly looked like a child.
“Mom?””
Elena’s eyes filled with tears.
“Noah.””
He stared at her.
Then shook his head.
“No.””
She stepped forward.
“Noah, please.””
“No.””
His voice broke.
“You’re not real.””
Elena stopped.
“I thought you were dead.””
“I know.””
“I waited for you.””
Noah laughed painfully.
“Did you?””
The question destroyed her.
Malik watched the scene.
Two sons.
Two different stories.
Both carrying the same wound.
Elena looked at Noah.
“I tried to come back.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
The same question.
Different child.
Elena closed her eyes.
“Because they would have found you.””
Noah looked confused.
“Who?””
Before she could answer, the boardroom doors opened.
Security guards rushed inside.
One of them whispered urgently to Marcus.
“Sir, we have a problem.””
Marcus turned.
“What?””
The guard looked terrified.
“Someone accessed the company servers.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“What did they access?””
The guard handed him a printout.
Adrian read it.
Then his face changed.
“What?””
Marcus took the paper.
At the top was a file name.
*PROJECT ECHO — SUBJECT LIST*
Below it were two names.
Malik Hale.
Noah Hale.
And underneath them…
A third entry.
A child listed as:
*SUBJECT ZERO — UNKNOWN LOCATION.*
Everyone stared.
Marcus looked at Elena.
“What is this?””
Elena’s face went pale.
Because she knew exactly what it meant.
“No.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“Elena.””
She looked at him.
Her voice barely worked.
“There wasn’t only one child they were hiding.””
Malik felt cold.
Noah stared at the document.
“Then who is Subject Zero?””
Elena looked at the three names.
Then whispered the truth she had spent twelve years trying to bury.
“Your father had another secret.””
The lights in the boardroom suddenly went out.
A phone rang in the darkness.
Nobody moved.
Marcus answered.
A distorted voice spoke.
“Congratulations, Marcus.””
He froze.
“You found your children.””
The voice paused.
“But you still haven’t found the first one.””
The call ended.
And on the dark screen behind them, a new image appeared.
A photograph.
Of a child.
Taken twenty years earlier.
A child standing beside Elena.
May you like
And written underneath was one sentence:
*THE HEIR YOU NEVER KNEW YOU LOST.*
