Chapter 4: The Man Who Knew Where Elena Went
The room remained silent after Adrian’s confession.
Not the peaceful kind of silence.
The kind that came before something broke.
Marcus stood across from his brother, staring at the man he had trusted for half his life.
The man who had comforted him.
The man who had helped him search for Elena.
The man who had watched him suffer.
“You knew.””
Marcus’s voice was quiet.
Adrian looked down.
“Yes.””
Malik felt his chest tighten.
A part of him had spent years imagining the moment he found the person responsible for his mother’s disappearance.
He imagined anger.
He imagined revenge.
He imagined screaming until his voice disappeared.
But seeing Adrian Hale standing there, an older man with tired eyes and a guilty expression, felt different.
Because this wasn’t a stranger.
This was someone who had looked his mother in the eyes.
Someone who knew where she went.
Someone who knew why she never came back.
Marcus walked closer.
“You let me believe she left me.””
Adrian didn’t move.
“I thought it was the only way.””
“The only way?””
Marcus’s voice rose.
“You watched me destroy myself for twelve years.””
“I watched you survive.””
Marcus stared at him.
“Don’t.””
The warning in his voice was clear.
“Don’t try to make yourself the victim.””
Adrian closed his eyes.
“I’m not.””
“Then explain.””
Adrian looked at Malik.
For a moment, his expression softened.
“I knew about him.””
Malik’s body went still.
Marcus turned sharply.
“What?””
Adrian looked at the young man standing beside him.
“I knew Elena had a son.””
Malik felt anger rise in his throat.
“And you did nothing?””
“I tried.””
“No.””
Malik stepped forward.
“You don’t get to say that.””
Adrian looked at him.
“I tried to keep you alive.””
The words were so unexpected that Malik froze.
Marcus noticed.
“Explain.””
Adrian walked slowly into the room and closed the door behind him.
His hands were shaking.
“The night Elena disappeared, she came to me.””
Marcus’s face changed.
“She came to you?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because she found something.””
Adrian looked at the file on the table.
“Something about Hale International.””
Marcus glanced at the documents.
“The company?””
Adrian nodded.
“Years ago, before you became CEO, our father created a private division inside the company.””
Marcus frowned.
“Our father?””
“Yes.””
Malik watched Marcus carefully.
The billionaire rarely showed emotion.
But now, pain crossed his face.
“What kind of division?””
Adrian hesitated.
“One that didn’t officially exist.””
The room felt colder.
Marcus looked confused.
“What does that mean?””
“It means there were accounts, projects, and operations hidden from the board.””
Adrian pointed toward the document.
“Project Echo was one of them.””
Malik looked at the paper.
“What was Project Echo?””
Adrian’s expression darkened.
“I don’t know everything.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I’m telling the truth.””
“You were my father’s right hand.””
“And I was his son.””
Adrian’s voice cracked.
“That’s the problem, Marcus. I spent my whole life trying to earn his approval.””
The confession surprised both men.
Adrian continued.
“He never saw us as sons. He saw us as tools.””
Marcus said nothing.
Because somewhere deep inside, he knew.
Their father had been brilliant.
Powerful.
Successful.
But he had been cruel.
“He built secrets into everything,” Adrian said.
“And when Elena discovered one of them, she became a threat.””
Malik stepped closer.
“What did she find?””
Adrian looked at him.
“That’s the part I never knew.””
Marcus’s eyes narrowed.
“You expect us to believe Elena told you everything?””
“No.””
“Then why did she come to you?””
Adrian looked away.
“Because she thought I was the only person who could help her.””
Malik noticed the sadness in his expression.
“You cared about her.””
Adrian didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
Marcus saw it too.
And somehow, that made everything more complicated.
“You loved her.””
Adrian looked at his brother.
“I respected her.””
“That wasn’t my question.””
A long silence passed.
Finally, Adrian said:
“Yes.””
The answer hit Marcus harder than expected.
Not because Adrian loved Elena.
But because Marcus suddenly realized how many people had known pieces of the truth while he knew nothing.
His brother.
His company.
His family.
Everyone had been holding pieces of his life.
Everyone except him.
A few minutes later, they moved to Marcus’s private office.
The city stretched beneath them.
Beautiful.
Cold.
Unforgiving.
Adrian stood near the window.
Malik sat across from Marcus’s desk, watching both brothers.
“Tell me what happened that night,” Marcus said.
Adrian didn’t turn around.
“Elena called me at 11:43 p.m.””
Marcus remembered.
“I know.””
“I told her to come to the office.””
Marcus’s eyes narrowed.
“Why?””
“Because she said someone was following her.””
Malik leaned forward.
“She knew?””
Adrian nodded.
“She had noticed someone watching her for weeks.””
Marcus looked at the floor.
“Why didn’t she tell me?””
Adrian finally turned.
“Because she was trying to protect you.””
Marcus shook his head.
“She should have trusted me.””
“She did.””
Adrian’s voice softened.
“That’s why she came to me first.””
The sentence cut deeper.
Marcus looked away.
“What happened after she arrived?””
“She gave me the key.””
The brass key on the desk seemed to become heavier.
“She told me if anything happened, I needed to make sure you found Locker 317.””
Malik looked at Marcus.
“Then why didn’t you?””
Adrian looked ashamed.
“Because before I could get there…”
He stopped.
Marcus waited.
“Before you could get there what?””
Adrian swallowed.
“Someone took Elena.””
Malik’s fingers curled into fists.
“Who?””
Adrian looked at him.
“I never saw their faces.””
“Then how do you know they weren’t random?””
“Because they knew everything.””
Adrian walked toward the desk.
“They knew Elena had evidence. They knew about the key. They knew she trusted me.””
Marcus stared.
“And you?””
Adrian’s voice became quiet.
“They knew I would do anything to protect my family.””
Malik looked confused.
“What does that mean?””
Adrian looked at Marcus.
“It means they gave me a choice.””
The room went silent.
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“What choice?””
Adrian’s eyes filled with regret.
“They told me if I told you the truth, they would come after Malik.””
Malik froze.
Marcus looked at him.
“They knew about him?””
“Yes.””
Adrian nodded.
“They knew Elena had a son.””
A terrible silence followed.
Marcus slowly looked at Malik.
All this time.
All these years.
Someone had known he existed.
Someone had known Elena was protecting him.
Someone had decided he was safer living without the truth.
Malik’s voice was barely audible.
“So you let me grow up without a father.””
Adrian looked at him.
“I let you grow up alive.””
The words hung between them.
Malik looked away.
Because he hated that part of him understood.
Just a little.
Marcus walked to the window.
“What happened to Elena?””
Adrian’s face changed.
“I don’t know.””
Marcus turned.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I saw her once after that night.””
Both Marcus and Malik froze.
“When?””
Adrian looked toward the city.
“Three months after she disappeared.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“You saw her?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
Adrian hesitated.
Then he reached into his coat pocket.
He pulled out a small envelope.
“I was going to destroy this.””
Malik stood.
“What is it?””
Adrian placed it on the desk.
“A letter Elena gave me.””
Marcus stared.
“You had another letter?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you show me?””
Adrian looked at him.
“Because of what she wrote.””
Marcus opened the envelope.
Inside was a single page.
The handwriting was Elena’s.
His hands shook as he read.
Then his expression changed.
“What?””
Malik moved closer.
Marcus couldn’t speak.
So Adrian answered.
“Read the last line.””
Malik picked up the letter.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
His face went pale.
Because Elena’s final message wasn’t about Marcus.
It wasn’t about Adrian.
It wasn’t even about the people chasing her.
It was about Malik.
The last sentence she wrote before vanishing was:
*“If Marcus ever finds our son, tell him the truth—Malik was never the only child they were looking for.””*
Marcus slowly lowered the letter.
“What does that mean?””
Nobody answered.
Then Adrian’s phone rang.
All three men looked at it.
The number on the screen was unknown.
Adrian answered.
“Hello?””
A voice came through.
A voice that made the color disappear from Adrian’s face.
“Adrian.””
He froze.
Marcus stood.
“Who is it?””
Adrian couldn’t speak.
The voice continued.
“You should have left the locker alone.””
The call ended.
Adrian slowly lowered the phone.
Malik stared at him.
“Who was that?””
Adrian looked at Marcus.
Then at Malik.
And whispered:
“The person who took your mother.””
A second later, another message appeared on Adrian’s phone.
One sentence.
May you like
One warning.
*RUN BEFORE THEY FIND THE OTHER ONE.*
