Chapter 2 - THE COFFIN THAT REVEALED THE FIRST LIEThe entire cemetery watched me.

Not because they understood.

Because they thought I had lost my mind.

A grieving father refusing to bury his son.

A funeral stopped because of a child’s impossible accusation.

Everyone had already decided what they believed.

David was dead.

Sarah was a grieving widow.

Leo was a confused little boy.

And I was a father who could not accept reality.

But they were wrong.

Because nobody knew my son the way I did.

And nobody knew Sarah the way I thought I did.

The funeral director stepped toward me carefully.

“Mr. Carter, I understand this is emotional, but opening the coffin is not something we can simply—”

“Open it.”

My voice surprised even me.

The crowd became silent.

Sarah moved closer.

“Daniel, please.”

I looked at her.

For years, I had considered her family.

I welcomed her into our lives.

I trusted her with my son.

But now…

I saw something different.

Not grief.

Not sadness.

Fear.

“You don’t want me to open it.”

Her expression changed.

“That’s not true.”

“Then why are you afraid?”

She froze.

Only for a second.

But enough.

Leo stood beside me.

Still crying.

Still terrified.

He looked at the coffin.

“I saw her.”

The crowd turned.

Sarah immediately shook her head.

“This child is making up a story.”

Leo looked at her.

“I’m not!”

His voice broke.

“You told David nobody would know.”

A cold feeling moved through my body.

Nobody would know.

Know what?

I looked at Sarah.

“What is he talking about?”

She did not answer.

That silence told me more than any confession.

The funeral director finally agreed.

Not because he believed Leo.

Because he saw something in my face.

The face of a father who was not asking anymore.

I was demanding the truth.

The workers carefully lifted the coffin.

The rain became heavier.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

The lid opened slowly.

And everyone looked inside.

At first…

nothing seemed wrong.

David looked peaceful.

Too peaceful.

His eyes were closed.

His hands rested over his chest.

The same suit we chose for him.

The same watch I gave him on his eighteenth birthday.

For one moment…

I almost collapsed.

Because he looked like my son.

Like he was only sleeping.

Then Leo whispered:

“Look at his hand.”

Everyone turned.

I stepped closer.

And my heart stopped.

There was something strange.

A small mark near David’s wrist.

Not an injury.

A medical mark.

Like someone had inserted something.

I looked at Sarah.

She immediately looked away.

“Daniel…”

Her voice was softer now.

Different.

“I can explain.”

The cemetery went silent.

Those words.

Those exact words.

Were the words people used when there was something to explain.

I stared at her.

“You told me he died at home.”

“Yes.”

“You told me nobody was with him.”

“I wasn’t.”

Leo suddenly shouted:

“You were!”

Sarah turned toward him.

“You little liar.”

The anger in her voice shocked everyone.

Because a moment ago, she was the perfect grieving widow.

Now she looked like someone losing control.

I turned back toward David.

The doctor who signed the death certificate was contacted immediately.

He arrived thirty minutes later.

His name was Dr. Thomas Reed.

He had treated David for years.

When he saw the coffin open…

his face changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

I noticed.

“You know something.”

He looked at me.

“Mr. Carter…”

“No.”

I stepped closer.

“You know something.”

Sarah immediately interrupted.

“Daniel, stop.”

I looked at her.

“Why are you trying so hard to stop me?”

She had no answer.

Dr. Reed finally spoke.

“I need to tell you something.”

Everyone listened.

“The official cause of death may not be accurate.”

My entire body went cold.

“What?”

He looked down.

“When I examined David, there were inconsistencies.”

Sarah’s face turned pale.

“What are you saying?”

The doctor looked at her.

“I’m saying you asked me to sign the report before completing the full examination.”

The crowd reacted.

Sarah stepped back.

“That’s a lie.”

Dr. Reed shook his head.

“No.”

He looked at me.

“I was pressured.”

The world became silent.

Because suddenly…

the impossible story became possible.

My son might not have died naturally.

Someone might have wanted him gone.

And the person standing beside me…

the person crying beside his coffin…

might have known exactly what happened.

The police arrived that evening.

The funeral became an investigation.

David’s body was taken for further examination.

Sarah was questioned.

And Leo…

the little boy everyone ignored…

became the most important witness.

I sat outside the station while detectives worked.

Leo sat beside his father.

I looked at him.

“Why did you come today?”

He looked down.

“Because David asked me to.”

I froze.

“When?”

“The night before he died.”

My heart stopped.

“What did he say?”

Leo reached into his backpack.

And pulled out a small object.

David’s phone.

My hands started shaking.

“Where did you get this?”

Leo whispered:

“He gave it to me.”

“Why?”

The boy looked at me.

“Because he said Sarah would take everything if he didn’t hide it.”

I turned the phone on.

There was one video.

Recorded the night before David died.

My fingers trembled as I pressed play.

The screen showed David sitting in his apartment.

He looked tired.

Scared.

But alive.

He looked directly into the camera.

“Dad…”

I stopped breathing.

“If you’re watching this…”

David swallowed.

“Something happened.”

A pause.

“I found out Sarah has been lying to us.”

My heart tightened.

“She isn’t who she says she is.”

Then David looked toward the door.

Like he heard something.

His face changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

And his final words were:

“If anything happens to me…”

The video cut.

But before it ended…

a voice came from outside the room.

A woman’s voice.

Sarah’s voice.

“David?”

Nobody spoke.

Because now there was proof.

My son knew he was in danger.

He tried to leave evidence.

And someone stopped him.

But the biggest question remained:

Why?

What was Sarah hiding?

And why was she willing to let her own husband disappear?
