Chapter 4 - THE FAMILY MEMBER WHO WANTED DAVID GONEDaniel Carter spent twenty-two years believing he understood his family.

He believed he knew who loved him.
Who supported him.
Who would stand beside him when everything collapsed.
He was wrong.
The people closest to him had not been protecting him.
They had been studying him.
Waiting.
Planning.
And the worst part was…
David knew.
His son had discovered the truth before everyone else.
And it had cost him his life.
Daniel spent the next forty-eight hours doing something nobody expected.
He stopped acting like a grieving father.
He started acting like a man preparing a war.
The first thing he did was remove Victor Lang from Carter Industries.
Victor arrived at the emergency board meeting expecting sympathy.
Instead, he found every executive sitting silently.
Daniel stood at the front of the room.
“Victor Lang.”
Victor smiled.
“Daniel, I know this is a difficult time.”
“No.”
Daniel placed a folder on the table.
“This is a difficult time for you.”
Victor’s smile disappeared.
Inside the folder were financial records.
Hidden transfers.
Private accounts.
Payments connected to Sarah’s father.
Victor slowly sat down.
“You don’t understand what you’re looking at.”
Daniel looked at him.
“I understand exactly.”
“You’re making a mistake.”
“No.”
Daniel leaned forward.
“I made the mistake of trusting you.”
Victor tried to defend himself.
He claimed the money transfers were investments.
He claimed Richard Vale contacted him without his knowledge.
He claimed Sarah manipulated him.
But Daniel noticed something.
Every person involved blamed someone else.
That meant one thing.
They were afraid.
And afraid people made mistakes.
That evening, Daniel met Detective Marcus Hill.
“I need everything on Richard Vale.”
Marcus looked surprised.
“Richard Vale disappeared years ago.”
“That doesn’t mean he stopped existing.”
The detective opened a file.
“You should see this.”
Daniel looked inside.
And froze.
A photograph.
Richard Vale.
Taken two weeks earlier.
Alive.
Working.
Planning.
The man everyone thought was gone had been hiding in plain sight.
“Where was this taken?”
Marcus pointed.
“Your family estate.”
Daniel stared.
“What?”
The detective nodded.
“Richard Vale has been visiting someone inside your family.”
Daniel felt cold.
“Who?”
Marcus turned the page.
A name.
Evelyn Carter.
Daniel’s mother.
For several seconds, Daniel said nothing.
His own mother.
The woman who cried beside him at David’s funeral.
The woman who told him:
“We have to be strong.”
She knew.
Maybe not everything.
But enough.
Daniel went home immediately.
Evelyn was sitting in the living room.
As if she expected him.
“You found out.”
Daniel stopped.
The sentence shocked him.
Not because she admitted it.
Because she was not surprised.
“How long?”
Evelyn looked down.
“Long enough.”
Daniel’s voice became cold.
“You knew Sarah’s father was alive?”
“Yes.”
“You knew Victor was involved?”
“Yes.”
“You knew David was investigating?”
Her eyes filled.
“Yes.”
The silence was unbearable.
Daniel felt something inside him break.
“Then why?”
Evelyn whispered:
“Because I was trying to protect this family.”
Daniel laughed.
A bitter laugh.
“No.”
He shook his head.
“You were protecting the family name.”
Evelyn finally confessed.
Years earlier, Richard Vale had lost everything because of Daniel’s father.
But instead of revenge against Daniel…
he wanted something bigger.
He wanted Carter Industries.
And the easiest way was not attacking Daniel.
It was marrying into his family.
Sarah was chosen.
Victor was recruited.
And David discovered everything.
“Why kill David?”
Evelyn looked away.
“I don’t know if they planned to kill him.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
“They wanted him silent.”
“That makes no sense.”
Evelyn whispered:
“Because David found something worse.”
“What?”
She looked at him.
“He found proof that Sarah was not just after the company.”
A pause.
“She was after your family inheritance.”
That night, Daniel opened David’s notebook again.
Near the final pages, he found something he had missed.
A sentence written in a hurry.
Dad, if you discover Sarah’s plan, don’t confront her. She is being controlled too.
Daniel stopped.
Controlled?
Then who was controlling Sarah?
He turned the page.
The final note was only four words.
Look at the birth records.
The next morning, Daniel went to the family archive.
He searched David’s birth documents.
Everything seemed normal.
Until he found a second file.
A hidden file.
A DNA report.
Daniel opened it.
And his entire world stopped.
Because the report revealed something impossible.

David Carter…
was not biologically his son.
