Chapter 8 - THE SECRET HIS FATHER LEFT BEHINDDaniel watched the old recording three more times.

Each time, the same words haunted him.
“The person you trust most is the person who started it all.”
His father’s face had been serious.
Not angry.
Not afraid.
Just tired.
Like a man who had spent years carrying a truth too heavy to share.
Daniel had spent his entire life believing his father died because of bad luck.
A car accident.
A dangerous road.
A tragedy.
But now he knew.
It was not an accident.
It was another carefully created lie.
And someone had been protecting that lie for decades.
The hidden room contained more than the video.
There were hundreds of documents.
Old contracts.
Private letters.
Financial records.
But one file caught Daniel’s attention.
A black folder with a handwritten label:
THE CARTER LEGACY
Inside were documents from before Carter Industries became successful.
Before the company became powerful.
Before Daniel was born.
The first page contained one name.
Thomas Carter.
Daniel’s grandfather.
His father’s father.
The man who built the foundation of the family empire.
Daniel read through the documents.
And slowly, the truth appeared.
Thomas Carter had a secret.
A secret that could destroy the entire family.
Decades earlier, Thomas had discovered that his own brother, Edward Carter, was illegally transferring company assets.
Instead of reporting him, Thomas made a deal.
Edward would disappear from the company.
In exchange, the scandal would never become public.
But Edward never forgot.
He believed Thomas stole his future.
And his children inherited that anger.
Including Richard Vale.
Daniel froze.
Richard Vale was not attacking Carter Industries because of a random business failure.
This was not revenge from one man.
It was a family war.
A war that started before Daniel was even born.
Then Daniel found another document.
A birth record.
Richard Vale’s real identity was revealed.
His mother was not a Vale.
Her name was Elizabeth Carter.
Edward Carter’s daughter.
Daniel sat down.
The truth was worse than he imagined.
Richard was family.
A hidden member of the Carter bloodline.
The enemy was not outside the family.
The enemy was inside it.
Daniel immediately called Marcus.
“You need to come here.”
“What did you find?”
“Everything.”
Two hours later, Marcus arrived.
Daniel handed him the files.
The detective read silently.
Then looked up.
“This changes everything.”
“Yes.”
“Richard Vale wasn’t trying to destroy Carter Industries.”
Daniel nodded.
“He was trying to reclaim it.”
But there was still one question.
Why David?
Why kill the person who had no idea about the family war?
Marcus looked through the documents.
“Maybe David discovered something.”
Daniel remembered David’s notebook.
The final message.
The person controlling them all is someone inside our family.
Then Daniel noticed something.
A signature.
On several documents.
The same signature appeared again and again.
Approving transfers.
Approving payments.
Approving secret agreements.
Daniel’s blood ran cold.
Because he recognized it.
It belonged to someone still alive.
Someone who had been standing beside him.
Someone who cried at David’s funeral.
His phone rang.
Evelyn.
His mother.
Daniel answered.
“Mom.”
Her voice was shaking.
“Daniel, you need to leave the house.”
“What?”
“Right now.”
“Why?”
A pause.
Then:
“Because they know you found the files.”
Daniel looked around.
“Who?”
Before she could answer…
the call disconnected.
Seconds later, the lights went out.
Daniel reached for his phone.
A sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Someone entered the old estate.
Daniel stayed hidden.
Then he saw the person.
And his entire body froze.
It was not Richard.
Not Victor.
Not Sarah.
It was someone impossible.
Someone he trusted his entire life.
May you like
His uncle.
James Carter.
