Chapter 7 - THE FAMILY MEMBER WHO WANTED DAVID GONEDaniel stared at the photograph for nearly five minutes.

He had seen his mother thousands of times.
At birthdays.
At family dinners.
At company events.
At David’s funeral.
She was always the same person.
Warm.
Caring.
Protective.
The woman who hugged him when life became difficult.
The woman who cried beside him when David died.
But now…
she was standing in the background of a photograph connected to the people who destroyed his son’s life.
And for the first time, Daniel wondered:
How much of his life had been a lie?
The photograph was taken three years before David died.
A family gathering.
Everyone smiling.
Everyone pretending.
Daniel zoomed in.
Behind David stood Evelyn Carter.
His mother.
Beside her was Richard Vale.
And between them…
a folder.
A small detail.
Something nobody else would notice.
But Daniel did.
Because his entire career was built on noticing details.
That folder had the Carter Industries logo.
A logo only executives and family members had access to.
Why did Richard have it?
Why was his mother standing with him?
And why did David’s death happen years later?
Daniel called his mother immediately.
She answered after the second ring.
“Daniel?”
Her voice sounded normal.
Too normal.
“Mom.”
A pause.
“Where are you?”
“At home.”
“I need to ask you something.”
Silence.
“What is it?”
Daniel looked at the photograph.
“Did you know Richard Vale was alive?”
The silence on the other end lasted three seconds.
But three seconds was enough.
Daniel closed his eyes.
She knew.
“Mom.”
Evelyn finally spoke.
“I wanted to tell you.”
“When?”
“I don’t know.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Everyone always says that.”
“Daniel—”
“No.”
His voice became colder.
“My son is dead because everyone wanted to protect me from the truth.”
Evelyn started crying.
“You don’t understand.”
“Then explain.”
She came to his house thirty minutes later.
But Daniel noticed something immediately.
She looked afraid.
Not guilty.
Afraid.
That meant there was something worse.
“Sit down.”
Evelyn did.
For several seconds, she stared at the floor.
Then she said:
“Richard Vale did not start this.”
Daniel frowned.
“What?”
“He inherited it.”
Daniel froze.
“Inherited what?”
“The hatred.”
Evelyn explained something Daniel had never heard before.
Years ago, before Richard became a powerful businessman, before the rivalry between Carter Industries and Vale Holdings…
there was another conflict.
Daniel’s father had discovered Richard was stealing money from investors.
He exposed him.
Richard lost everything.
But instead of accepting responsibility…
he blamed the Carter family.
He convinced himself that Daniel’s family had destroyed his life.
And revenge became his purpose.
“But why David?”
Daniel asked.
Evelyn looked at him.
“Because David was the perfect target.”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“He was my son.”
“I know.”
“He trusted people.”
“I know.”
“He was innocent.”
Evelyn looked away.
“That was exactly why.”
Richard did not want to attack Daniel directly.
He wanted to break him.
He wanted Daniel to lose the person he loved most.
So he created a plan.
Sarah would marry David.
Victor would enter Carter Industries.
The doctor would control medical records.
And Evelyn…
Evelyn would keep Daniel from discovering the truth.
Daniel stared at his mother.
“You helped them.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“Yes.”
The answer hurt more than denial.
“How?”
“I gave Richard information.”
“What information?”
“Your company structure.”
Daniel stood.
“You gave him access?”
“I thought I was preventing something worse.”
Daniel looked at her.
“No.”
His voice shook.
“You were helping him.”
Evelyn reached into her bag.
She placed an envelope on the table.
“I kept this because I knew one day you would find out.”
Daniel opened it.
Inside was a letter.
David’s handwriting.
His heart stopped.
Another message from his son.
Dad,
If you are reading this, Grandma probably finally told you the truth.
Please don’t hate her immediately.
She made mistakes because she was afraid.
But fear is how people like Richard win.
Daniel wiped his eyes.
The letter continued.
I found something bigger than Sarah, Victor, and Richard.
Something that proves they were not just trying to take the company.
They were trying to erase our family completely.
At the bottom was an address.
An old Carter property.
A place Daniel had never heard of.
Then one final sentence:
The truth is buried where Grandpa hid the first betrayal.
Daniel looked at his mother.
“What is that place?”
Evelyn went pale.
“Daniel…”
“What is it?”
She whispered:
“The original Carter family estate.”
“Why is that important?”
Her voice became almost impossible to hear.
“Because that is where your father disappeared.”
Daniel froze.
“My father?”
Evelyn nodded.
“Your father did not die in an accident.”
The room went silent.
“He was murdered.”
Daniel felt the ground disappear.
For years, he believed his father died from a tragic accident.
Another lie.
Another cover-up.
Another secret buried by the people closest to him.
That night, Daniel went to the old Carter estate.
The property had been abandoned for years.
The house stood empty.
Broken windows.
Dust-covered rooms.
A place everyone forgot.
Except someone had recently been there.
The door was unlocked.
Inside, Daniel found a hidden room.
A room filled with old documents.
Photos.
Recordings.
Evidence.
At the center was a single box.
With his name on it.
DANIEL CARTER
His hands trembled as he opened it.
Inside was a video recorder.
One tape.
One message.
Recorded by his father.
Daniel pressed play.
The screen flickered.
Then an older version of his father appeared.
The first words destroyed everything:
“Daniel, if you are watching this, it means they finally came for David.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
Because his father knew.
He knew this would happen.
The video continued:
“Your family has been fighting the same enemy for decades.”
A pause.
“And the person you trust most…”
The image became distorted.
Then his father said:
“Is the person who started it all.”
The video stopped.
Daniel stared at the blank screen.
Because now he had only one question.
May you like
Who started everything?
And the answer was hidden in the final secret his father left behind.
