Chapter 6 - THE WIFE WHO WAS NEVER THE VICTIMDaniel Carter read Sarah’s message again.

And again.

“I need to tell you the truth before my father kills me too.”

A year ago, those words would have made him run to her without hesitation.

He would have believed her.

He would have protected her.

Because that was who Daniel was.

A man who searched for the good in people.

A man who believed family meant loyalty.

A man who thought love could overcome anything.

But after David’s death…

that man was gone.

Because Daniel had learned the most painful lesson of his life.

The most dangerous people were not always strangers.

Sometimes they were the ones who knew exactly how to make you trust them.

Sarah was hiding in an old apartment nearly an hour outside the city.

When Daniel arrived with Detective Marcus Hill, she opened the door immediately.

Almost like she had been expecting him.

“I knew you would come.”

Daniel looked at her coldly.

“You knew?”

Sarah nodded.

“Because David would have done the same thing.”

That sentence stopped him.

For a moment, Daniel saw something he hated.

A reminder of his son.

“Don’t talk about David like you loved him.”

Sarah lowered her eyes.

“I know.”

She looked nothing like the woman from the funeral.

No designer clothes.

No perfect makeup.

No carefully controlled expression.

Just a tired woman who looked like she had been running from something for years.

“I didn’t kill him.”

Daniel stared at her.

“I know what you want me to believe.”

“It’s the truth.”

“You were the one who gave him the medicine.”

Sarah froze.

Then slowly nodded.

“Yes.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Then explain.”

Sarah sat down.

“I was part of it.”

The confession surprised him.

“I married David because of my father.”

Daniel said nothing.

She continued.

“My father wanted Carter Industries.”

“Richard Vale.”

Sarah nodded.

“He spent my entire life teaching me one thing.”

“What?”

“That the Carter family destroyed us.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“He raised you to hate people you never knew.”

“Yes.”

“And you believed him?”

“At first.”

Sarah looked away.

“Then I met David.”

For the first time, her voice changed.

Not because she was trying to defend herself.

Because she was remembering him.

“David was nothing like what my father described.”

“He wasn’t arrogant.”

“He wasn’t cruel.”

“He didn’t care about money the way my father thought he would.”

Daniel stayed silent.

“He cared about people.”

A tear rolled down her face.

“And that was when I realized my father was wrong.”

“Then why didn’t you tell David the truth?”

Sarah closed her eyes.

“Because by the time I wanted to…”

“It was too late.”

Daniel frowned.

“What happened?”

“David found out who I really was.”

Silence.

“He discovered I was Richard Vale’s daughter.”

Daniel looked at her.

“What did he do?”

Sarah smiled sadly.

“He forgave me.”

That answer hurt.

Because it sounded exactly like David.

“He told me he wanted to help me escape my father.”

Daniel looked away.

His son was trying to save the person who betrayed him.

Even at the end.

David was still David.

“Then Richard found out.”

Sarah nodded.

“And he knew David was no longer useful.”

Daniel’s voice became colder.

“So he killed him.”

Sarah looked down.

“Yes.”

Daniel stood.

“You expect me to forgive you?”

Sarah shook her head.

“No.”

“You helped them.”

“Yes.”

“You lied to my son.”

“Yes.”

“You watched him die.”

Sarah closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

The honesty surprised him.

“I deserve whatever happens.”

Daniel stared at her.

But before he left, Sarah said something that stopped him.

“Daniel.”

He turned.

“David knew everything.”

A pause.

“He knew he might die.”

Daniel froze.

“He left something for you.”

That night, Daniel received a package.

Inside was David’s notebook.

The final pages had been hidden.

The first sentence made Daniel’s hands shake.

Dad, if you are reading this, I didn’t make it.

Daniel sat down.

The next line destroyed him.

But please don’t hate Sarah before you know the whole truth.

David had written everything.

The investigation.

Sarah’s connection to Richard.

Victor’s betrayal.

The hidden money transfers.

But one sentence caught Daniel’s attention.

Sarah is not the person controlling this.

Daniel turned the page.

The final words were:

The person behind everything is someone inside our family.

Daniel closed the notebook.

Because he finally understood.

Sarah was not the mastermind.

Victor was not the mastermind.

They were only pieces.

Someone else had been moving them.

Someone closer.

Someone who had been standing beside him while pretending to grieve.

The next morning, Daniel made his first move.

He froze every account connected to Victor Lang.

He removed him from Carter Industries.

He opened a private investigation.

And then he did something nobody expected.

He went public.

Standing in front of dozens of reporters, Daniel said:

“My son was murdered.”

The cameras exploded.

“But the person responsible is not finished hiding.”

He looked directly into the cameras.

“So I’m going to bring every single person involved into the light.”

That night, Daniel received another message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

You are looking for the enemy. But you are standing next to him.

Attached was a photograph.

Daniel opened it.

And his blood went cold.

It was a family photo.

His family.

Taken years ago.

And standing behind David…

was someone Daniel recognized.

Someone he trusted.

May you like

Someone he never suspected.

His own mother.
