Chapter 10: The Child He Had Designed

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The voice coming through the loudspeakers had belonged to a dead man for twenty-nine years. Yet it carried the same calm authority Daniel remembered from childhood—the voice that had once told him that fear was merely weakness waiting to be corrected.

William Whitmore was alive.

And he wanted Lily.

Daniel stood beside Eleanor in the dim corridor of the abandoned neurological center, staring at the security camera above the door.

“Tell me what he meant,” Daniel said.

“What does he mean when he says he chose me to be Lily’s father?””

Eleanor pressed a trembling hand against her bruised cheek.

“I didn't know the entire truth until I found the original files. I knew Project Lark involved reproductive research, genetic screening, and experiments your father wasn't legally permitted to conduct. I knew he had falsified medical records. But I didn't understand why he was so interested in you.””

“I'm standing right here. Stop protecting me from the truth.””

“I'm trying to protect you from what it means.””

“Eleanor.””

She looked at him, and the terror in her eyes frightened him more than William's threats.

“Daniel, your genetic profile was altered before you were born.””

He stared at her.

“What?””

“William wasn't your biological father. He wasn't Richard's, either. He adopted both of you as infants and manufactured the family records. He wanted two boys who could grow up believing they belonged to him, boys he could shape without anyone questioning why their medical histories were so carefully controlled.””

Daniel shook his head.

“That's impossible. I've had medical examinations. Genetic screenings. I've seen the records.””

“Records William created.””

The hallway seemed to tilt beneath him.

He thought of his childhood bedroom, the photographs arranged on the mantel, the formal dinners where William had demanded perfect posture and perfect answers. He remembered being told that his mother had died giving birth to him, a story so often repeated that he'd never thought to question it.

“What about my biological parents?””

“I don't know their names yet. The original donor records are in the central archive. William has them.””

“And Lily?””

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“Lily was conceived through an embryo transfer without our knowledge or consent. The clinic told me the procedure had been routine. They told us the embryo came from a screened donor program. But William arranged a substitution.””

Daniel felt the blood drain from his face.

“Whose embryo?””

“I don't know.””

“Then how can you say William chose me?””

“Because he wanted a child with a specific combination of inherited traits. He selected the embryo, arranged for it to be transferred to me, and falsified the donor information. He believed you would raise Lily without ever knowing what he'd done.””

Daniel looked toward the security camera again.

“And now he wants her back.””

“He wants her genetic profile,” Eleanor whispered.

“Or what he believes her genetic profile can unlock.””

A metallic clang echoed from somewhere below them.

Detective Collins raised her weapon.

“Someone's moving in the lower corridor.””

Thomas's voice crackled through the radio Daniel had taken from a security station.

“Daniel, we have a problem. The main entrance just sealed, and the emergency exits are locking one by one. I can get you to the service stairwell, but not for long.””

“Can you get Lily out?””

“She's with Maya. They're still at the farmhouse.””

“Keep them there.””

“That's not going to be easy. We just received a message from the facility's network. It contains a live video feed of the farmhouse.””

Daniel's stomach tightened.

William had eyes everywhere.

“Get them into the basement,” Daniel ordered.

“Cut the power if you have to.””

“Already trying.””

The radio went silent.

Eleanor grabbed Daniel's arm.

“You can't bring Lily here. That's what he wants.””

“He threatened to release your genetic records. He knows where she is. There is nowhere safe until we stop him.””

“Then we stop him without giving him what he wants.””

Collins stepped closer, her expression hardening.

“What's in the archive?””

Eleanor hesitated before answering.

“The complete Lark database. Donor identities, consent forms, medical records, payment trails. Everything.””

“And if William releases it?””

“Thousands of families could discover that their children were conceived through unauthorized procedures. Some of those children could be adults now. Some could have inherited conditions they were never warned about. Others could learn their legal parents weren't their biological parents.””

Collins lowered her weapon slightly.

“So this isn't just about Lily.””

“No,” Eleanor said.

“It's about a man who believes human beings are experiments and the truth belongs to whoever has enough money to bury it.””

A door at the end of the corridor opened.

A man stepped into view, flanked by two armed guards.

Richard.

His suit was torn at the shoulder, and blood darkened the cuff of his white shirt. He raised both hands to show he was unarmed.

“Don't shoot,” he said.

“If I wanted you dead, I wouldn't have walked in alone.””

Collins kept her gun trained on him.

“Stop where you are.””

Richard obeyed.

Daniel moved between him and Eleanor.

“You said you wanted Project Lark destroyed.””

“I do.””

“You said William was dead.””

“I believed he was. Or I wanted to believe it.””

“You lied about everything.””

Richard's expression flickered.

“Not everything.””

“You let me think Eleanor was dead. You blocked her calls. You tried to take my daughter.””

“I was trying to keep William from finding her.””

“By calling her an asset?””

Richard flinched.

For the first time in Daniel's life, his brother looked genuinely ashamed.

“I said what he expected me to say. His people were watching. If I had refused, they would have known I was working against him.””

“And the custody order?””

“Fabricated. I helped Collins trace it. I also gave her the account numbers William used to finance the program.””

Collins's eyes narrowed.

“You expect me to believe you suddenly became a whistleblower?””

“No,” Richard said.

“I expect you to arrest me when this is over. But first, you need to understand what William is doing.””

He pulled a small black drive from his pocket and placed it on the floor.

“Lark wasn't designed merely to select embryos. William wanted to create a biological key—a specific combination of genetic markers that could activate a treatment protocol he'd spent decades developing.””

Daniel stared at him.

“What treatment?””

“A treatment for the neurological disease that killed his first wife.””

Eleanor's face changed.

“William had a wife before the woman who raised you?””

Richard nodded.

“She developed an inherited degenerative condition. He couldn't save her. After she died, he became obsessed with identifying and controlling the genes associated with it.

At first, he funded legitimate research. Then he started experimenting on embryos and patients who couldn't give informed consent.””

“And Lily has the markers he needs?””

“William believes she does. The records indicate that your biological profile and the donor profile were selected to produce a child with a rare combination of those markers.””

Daniel's hands curled into fists.

“He designed my daughter's conception to continue an experiment.””

“He designed the possibility,” Richard said.

“He doesn't know whether it worked. That's why he needs Lily's complete genetic data.””

A sudden burst of static came through Collins's radio.

Then a familiar voice filled the corridor.

“Very touching, boys.””

William.

A screen flickered on above the security desk. The image revealed an immaculate white room and a man sitting behind a glass table.

His hair was silver. His face was older than the photographs Daniel remembered, but the scar near his left temple was unmistakable.

The face of the man who had raised him.

“Daniel,” William said.

“You have forty minutes. Bring the child to the central laboratory, and Eleanor walks out alive. Refuse, and I release the archive to every news organization in the world.””

Daniel stepped toward the screen.

“You don't get to threaten my family.””

William smiled faintly.

“Your family is the product of my life's work.””

“No. My family is the people you hurt.””

For the first time, the smile disappeared.

“Then perhaps you should ask your wife what she did with the final embryo.””

Daniel turned sharply toward Eleanor.

She had gone pale.

“Eleanor?””

She looked at him, tears gathering in her eyes.

“I thought it had been destroyed.””

William leaned closer to the camera.

“Ask her what happened to the second child.””

The screen went black.

May you like

And Eleanor whispered the words that made Daniel's world collapse.

“Lily may not be your only daughter.””
