The Girl Who Knew My Daughter / Chapter 13 / 15

Chapter 13: Five Minutes to Save Them

Daniel heard Lily cry once.

Then the laboratory plunged into chaos.

Emergency lights flashed red along the floor. The chemical purge alarm shrieked overhead, and somewhere behind the glass enclosure, machinery began to roar. Daniel reached blindly through the darkness, searching for the familiar softness of his daughter's blanket.

“Lily!””

“Daniel, down!”” Collins shouted through the radio.

A gunshot cracked.

Someone crashed into a metal table. Glass shattered, followed by a man's curse.

Daniel dropped to his knees as a beam of emergency lighting swept across the room. For one terrifying instant, he saw Lily suspended in the arms of Adrian Cross, who was backing toward a sealed laboratory door.

Cross had taken her.

“Give her to me!”” Daniel shouted.

Cross pressed a small device against Lily's blanket.

“Don't come any closer. This is a remote override. If I lose control of the sequence, every sample in this facility will be destroyed.””

“You're holding a baby. There is no experiment worth her life.””

“You think I don't know that?””

Cross's voice cracked. He looked less like a scientist now than a man who had finally understood the consequences of his own decisions.

“William promised the purge would be limited to the sample chambers. He told me the safety systems would protect the occupants.””

Daniel glanced at the countdown.

*04:12.*

“Then stop it.””

“I can't. William has the master authorization.””

Across the room, Nathan wrestled with one of the guards. Richard had disappeared behind the central platform. Maya was crouched beside Sophie, trying to free her restraints with a broken piece of metal.

Daniel kept his eyes on Cross.

“Adrian, listen to me. You know what William has done. You know the records are fraudulent. You know those girls never consented to any of this.””

Cross swallowed.

“You think I haven't thought about it?””

“Then do one thing that isn't for him.””

The words seemed to reach him.

For a moment, Cross's grip loosened.

Then William's voice boomed through the ceiling speakers.

“Dr. Cross, proceed to the extraction chamber. You have three minutes.””

Cross looked up, terrified.

William continued.

“If you fail, your daughter will learn what happened to her mother.””

Daniel froze.

“Your daughter?””

Cross's face crumpled.

“My daughter was born with the condition William was trying to treat. He promised me he could save her. He said if I helped him complete Lark, he could give her a normal life.””

“You helped him steal my daughter because he promised to save yours?””

“I thought I could control the damage.””

“You couldn't.””

“No.”” Cross's eyes filled with tears.

“I couldn't.””

Lily whimpered against his chest.

Cross looked down at her.

“She has Eleanor's eyes.””

“She has her mother's courage, too,” Daniel said.

“Give her to me.””

The countdown reached three minutes.

Cross took one unsteady step forward.

Then another.

He placed Lily into Daniel's arms.

“There's a manual shutdown beneath the central platform,” he whispered.

“But the control requires two authorizations. William's and the original patient authorization.””

Daniel looked at him.

“What's the original patient authorization?””

Cross pointed toward the platform.

“Your biological record. William used your genetic profile as the first authorization key. Nathan's record was created as the backup.””

“So either Nathan or I can stop it?””

“If the system recognizes you both, yes. But the authorization has to be entered simultaneously.””

A crash shook the laboratory.

Richard emerged from behind the platform holding a metal access panel. Blood ran down his forehead, and his breathing was ragged.

“I found the manual controls,” he said.

“But William has locked the console.””

Nathan shoved the guard away and ran toward them.

“Then we'll unlock it.””

William appeared on the upper walkway, holding a pistol.

“Enough.””

Everyone stopped.

He pointed the weapon toward Nathan.

“You were designed to be obedient.””

Nathan stood perfectly still.

“I wasn't designed to be anything.””

“You were created because Daniel's genetic profile was incomplete. I gave you a chance to fulfill your purpose.””

“You gave me a number.””

William's jaw tightened.

“I gave you a life.””

“You kept me in a house where no one knew my name. You made strangers report what I ate, what I said, how I slept. You never once asked what I wanted.””

“You were necessary.””

Nathan looked at Daniel.

“That's what he says about everyone.””

William raised the pistol.

Richard moved first.

He struck William's arm, and the shot went wild, shattering a monitor. Nathan tackled William against the railing. The gun skidded across the floor.

Daniel ran to the central console.

“Richard, help me!””

Richard dragged the access panel free. Beneath it were two biometric readers and a narrow screen displaying the purge timer.

*02:31.*

Daniel pressed his hand against the first reader.

The screen flashed red.

*ORIGINAL PATIENT IDENTIFICATION REQUIRED.*

Nathan placed his palm against the second.

The display changed.

*GENETIC MATCH CONFIRMED.*

Daniel's reader remained red.

“Why isn't mine working?””

Cross hurried toward them.

“Because William replaced your medical identity with the fabricated Whitmore profile. The original record is in the archive.””

“Where?””

“Inside the central server. But we don't have time to retrieve it.””

Maya appeared beside them, clutching a small silver pendant.

“The numbers!”” she shouted.

She opened the crescent moon and pulled out the thin strip of metal hidden inside it.

“Eleanor said this was a key. The numbers are four, one, seven.””

Cross stared at it.

“That's not a vault code. It's a patient index.””

He grabbed the strip, entered the numbers, and pressed a hidden sequence on the console.

A new prompt appeared.

*LARK ORIGINAL PATIENT: D.W.*

Daniel felt his chest tighten.

“D.W.?””

“Your original identity,” Cross said.

“William never wanted the record connected to the Whitmore name.””

The reader turned green.

*AUTHORIZATION ACCEPTED.*

The countdown froze at *01:47*.

For one beautiful second, Daniel thought they had won.

Then the screen changed.

*SECONDARY AUTHORIZATION DENIED.*

Nathan stared at the console.

“What does that mean?””

Cross's face went pale.

“Your record isn't the backup.””

William laughed from the floor, where Richard held him down.

“No, Adrian. Nathan was never the backup.””

He looked directly at Daniel.

“He was the control.””

Daniel felt the room fall away.

William continued, almost proudly.

“Two children with nearly identical genetic foundations, raised under entirely different conditions. One exposed to wealth, privilege, and carefully managed stress. The other isolated, monitored, and denied every ordinary attachment. I needed to know whether the treatment depended on biology alone or whether the environment changed the outcome.””

Nathan's expression went blank.

“You made my life miserable to compare it with his.””

“I made your life useful.””

Nathan struck the console with his fist.

“Then use this!””

He pressed both hands against the readers.

The machine gave a low electronic pulse.

The screen flickered.

*DUAL AUTHORIZATION ACCEPTED.*

The purge timer stopped.

For several seconds, nobody breathed.

Then the lights steadied, and the ventilation system changed pitch.

Cross sank against the console.

“We did it.””

A mechanical lock clicked open somewhere in the room.

Daniel held Lily tighter, feeling her heartbeat against his chest.

But before anyone could move, William spoke again.

“You've stopped the purge.””

He smiled despite the blood on his face.

“But you haven't stopped the release.””

Collins's radio crackled.

“Daniel, we have a problem. The server has started transmitting the entire Lark archive to an external network. It's already leaving the building.””

Daniel turned toward the screens.

Thousands of files were streaming across them: medical records, genetic profiles, names, dates, confidential reports.

If the archive reached the public, innocent families would have their lives torn apart. Children would discover secrets they had never chosen to inherit. Patients would become targets.

William had built a final trap.

Even if Daniel saved the girls, the truth could still destroy them.

Richard looked at the screen, then at his brother.

“We can stop the transmission,” he said.

“But someone has to enter the server room and disconnect the physical uplink.””

“Where is it?””

“Behind the west wall.””

Daniel handed Lily to Maya.

“Stay with her.””

Maya clutched the baby.

“Where are you going?””

“To finish this.””

He turned toward the west wall.

And William, watching him through the emergency lights, whispered the words that made Daniel stop.

“Go ahead, Daniel. The server room contains the original birth records.””

A pause.

“Including the name of the woman who gave birth to you.””
