Chapter 6: The Price of My Daughter
Richard stood beneath the broken station clock as if he owned the building.
He had always possessed that talent. He could enter a room full of strangers and make them feel as though they were guests in his house.
Even now, with Thomas blocking the corridor and two security men behind him, he appeared perfectly comfortable.
He adjusted his cufflinks.
"Give me the notebook, Daniel.""
I held it tighter.
"No.""
His expression barely changed.
"You're making a mistake.""
"You altered my wife's medical records. You intercepted her calls. You knew she was alive and let me believe she was dead.""
"I let you believe what you needed to believe.""
I stared at him.
"You call that helping me?""
Richard sighed and glanced at Maya.
"Who's the child?""
"Maya," she answered before I could speak.
He looked her over.
"Ah. Eleanor's little messenger.""
Maya's face went white.
"You know me?""
"I know more about you than you think.""
He took a step toward her.
Thomas immediately blocked his path.
"Stay where you are.""
Richard raised his eyebrows.
"Thomas, you've worked for this family for six years. Surely you understand that this is a private matter.""
"No," Thomas replied.
"I understand that a ten-year-old girl and an infant are being threatened.""
Richard's mouth tightened.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a folded document.
"Daniel, your company owns the building you're standing in. It owns the land beneath it. It owns the security contractor outside. And, until very recently, it owned the medical institute where your daughter was conceived.""
He held out the paper.
"Sign this, and we can end this without anyone getting hurt.""
I didn't take it.
"What is it?""
"A temporary guardianship agreement.""
I laughed bitterly.
"You're asking me to sign away my daughter?""
"I'm asking you to protect her.""
"From whom?""
"From people who will do far worse than anything you've imagined.""
I looked at the two men behind him.
"Is that supposed to be a threat?""
Richard's voice sharpened.
"It's a warning.""
He stepped closer.
"You have no idea what the notebook contains. You found a handful of medical records and a few financial transfers, and now you think you've uncovered a conspiracy. You haven't. You've opened a door that should have remained closed.""
"Then explain what's behind it.""
"I can't.""
"Won't.""
Richard's jaw tightened.
"Do you remember our father?""
The question caught me off guard.
"Of course.""
"He built this family from nothing. He sacrificed everything to give us a future. And when he became ill, he trusted me to protect what he'd created.""
"He trusted both of us.""
"He trusted you to build the company. He trusted me to protect the family.""
Richard looked at Lily.
"And then Eleanor became pregnant.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"What does Eleanor have to do with our father?""
"Everything.""
He rubbed the black stone on his ring with his thumb.
"Our father was involved in a medical research program long before you started your company. He believed genetics could help prevent certain inherited diseases. He funded research into reproductive medicine, genetic screening, and embryo development.""
I stared at him.
"That's what the institute was supposed to do.""
"That was the public mission.""
"And the private mission?""
Richard glanced at Maya again.
"Your wife discovered that the program had gone beyond what our father intended. Certain people were using it to select embryos for specific genetic traits. They were making decisions about who should be born and who should never exist.""
The station seemed to grow colder.
"Who were these people?""
"Investors. Researchers. Individuals with enough money to believe that the future belonged to them.""
"And you?""
Richard's expression hardened.
"I tried to contain the damage.""
"By threatening my wife?""
"By keeping her alive.""
I stepped toward him.
"You let me believe she was dead!""
"Because she wanted you to stop searching.""
"She tried to call me!""
"She was frightened, Daniel. She didn't know whom to trust.""
"She trusted me.""
Richard's face twisted.
"Did she? Or did she trust the man she wanted you to be?""
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
That was the cruelest thing about Richard. He knew where to strike because he had spent his entire life watching me.
He knew about my obsession with control, my fear of failure, and the guilt I carried over every hour I had spent working instead of being with Eleanor.
He had used those weaknesses to convince me that my wife had abandoned me.
I took a breath.
"Why Lily?""
Richard looked toward the baby.
"Because Lily's biological father has something our family needs.""
My chest tightened.
"Who is he?""
"I can't tell you here.""
"Then tell me somewhere else.""
Richard shook his head.
"First, you sign the agreement.""
"No.""
He looked at the security men.
One of them moved toward Thomas.
Thomas caught his arm and pushed him back.
"Don't.""
The man stumbled against the wall.
Richard's composure finally cracked.
"Enough!""
His shout echoed through the corridor.
He turned toward me, his face flushed.
"You think you can walk away from this because you're Daniel Whitmore? You think money and lawyers will save you? Our father spent thirty years building a system that people would kill to protect. Lily is part of that system, whether you like it or not.""
"She's a baby!""
"She's an asset!""
The word hung between us.
Maya began to cry.
I moved closer to Richard.
"Say that again.""
He seemed to realize what he'd revealed.
His mouth closed.
I looked at the black stone on his ring.
"Is that why you wear it?""
Richard glanced down at his hand.
For the first time, he looked genuinely unsettled.
"Where did you see that?""
"On Dr. Cross's hand.""
His face drained of color.
I continued.
"You and Cross have been working together. You used my company's money to fund Project Lark. You altered medical records and tried to control who would have access to my daughter.""
Richard said nothing.
"And now you want me to sign over guardianship because you think I don't know who Lily's biological father is.""
His silence was answer enough.
I pulled the flash drive from my pocket.
"What's on this?""
Richard stared at it.
Then he did something I had never seen him do.
He looked afraid.
"Give it to me.""
"No.""
"Daniel, listen to me. You don't understand what you're holding.""
"Then explain it.""
"You could destroy everything.""
"Good.""
He lunged.
Thomas caught him around the shoulders, and the two men crashed against the locker doors.
Maya screamed.
Lily began crying.
I grabbed the girls and moved toward the exit, but one of Richard's men blocked the corridor.
"Move," I ordered.
He reached for Maya's backpack.
She twisted away.
"Don't touch me!""
The man grabbed the strap and pulled.
The backpack tore open. Pencils, notebooks, and the little stuffed rabbit spilled across the floor.
Maya dropped to her knees, scrambling to collect her things.
I shoved the man away.
"Get your hands off her!""
He stumbled backward.
Then a voice rang out from the entrance.
"Police! Nobody move!""
Two uniformed officers rushed into the station, followed by a woman in plain clothes carrying a badge.
Richard immediately raised his hands.
"Thank God. My brother is having a breakdown. He's stolen confidential medical records and is carrying an infant into a dangerous situation.""
The woman looked at me.
"Mr. Whitmore, I'm Detective Sarah Collins. We've received several reports concerning this incident.""
"From whom?""
"Your brother's security team.""
"Of course.""
Richard straightened his jacket.
"Daniel needs medical attention. He's been making irrational accusations about our family.""
I held up the red notebook.
"I have evidence of financial fraud, medical record tampering, and a conspiracy involving my daughter.""
Detective Collins took a step closer.
"Then we'll need to secure that evidence.""
Richard smiled faintly.
"Excellent. Please do.""
I saw the trap too late.
The detective's partner approached me and reached for the notebook.
Before I could react, Richard spoke.
"Make sure you also check the girl's backpack. Eleanor may have hidden additional stolen property there.""
Maya froze.
I looked at him.
"What are you doing?""
"Protecting the family.""
The detective's partner opened Maya's backpack and began searching through its contents.
He found the brass key, a folded photograph, and a small plastic pouch containing several strands of dark hair.
Maya gasped.
"Those aren't mine!""
The detective held up the pouch.
"Can you explain what these are?""
Maya shook her head frantically.
"Eleanor gave me that bag. I never put anything in it!""
Richard's expression became almost gentle.
"Poor child. She has been manipulated by a very disturbed woman.""
I stared at my brother.
He was framing a ten-year-old girl.
And he was doing it in front of me, with the confidence of a man who believed the entire system belonged to him.
Detective Collins looked at me.
"Mr. Whitmore, I'm going to need you to come with us.""
"For what?""
"Until we establish what happened here, we need to separate everyone and secure the evidence.""
Richard nodded sympathetically.
"That's reasonable.""
I wanted to strike him.
Instead, I looked at Maya.
She stood trembling beside the open backpack, clutching Lily's blanket.
"Daniel," she whispered, "don't let them take me.""
I moved toward her.
"No one is taking you.""
But Detective Collins stepped between us.
"Sir, please cooperate.""
Then my phone rang.
The screen showed an unknown number.
I answered without taking my eyes off Richard.
A woman's voice whispered through the speaker.
"Daniel?""
I stopped breathing.
It was Eleanor.
"Where are you?"" I demanded.
"Are you safe? Tell me where you are!""
Her breathing was ragged.
"Listen carefully. You have to get Lily away from Richard.""
"I'm trying.""
"No, Daniel. You don't understand. He isn't the one who wants her dead.""
My blood turned cold.
"Then who does?""
A pause.
Then she whispered a name.
"Your father.""
I couldn't speak.
"My father is dead.""
"I know what you were told," Eleanor said, her voice breaking.
"But Daniel, the man buried in that grave wasn't your father.""
The call crackled.
Somewhere in the background, a door slammed.
Eleanor gasped.
"He's here.""
"Eleanor!""
"Please, Daniel. Find the original birth records. Find out who your father really was.""
The line went dead.
I stared at the phone, unable to move.
Across the corridor, Richard had gone completely still.
He had heard enough to understand.
I looked at him.
"Richard, what did she mean?""
He slowly lowered his hands.
For the first time that night, my brother looked older than his years.
May you like
Then he glanced at Lily and whispered the words that shattered the last thing I believed about my family.
"Because if Eleanor is telling the truth, Daniel, neither of us is who we think we are.""
