Chapter 12: The Blood Between Brothers
The photograph had been taken through the rear window of the SUV.
Daniel enlarged it until the image broke into pixels. The driver’s face was partially hidden by shadow, but the reflection in the mirror showed enough: the same dark eyes, the same sharp jaw, the same faint scar beneath the right cheekbone.
His face.
Not William's. Not Richard's.
His own.
“It's a trick,” Daniel said, though he no longer believed it.
Richard stared at the image.
“William used to tell me we were identical in all the ways that mattered. I thought he meant we had been raised alike.””
“What are you saying?””
Richard's voice was barely audible.
“I think he meant something else.””
Collins stepped between them.
“Neither of you is going anywhere until we establish where that vehicle is headed.””
She placed the photograph on her tablet and began coordinating with state police. Daniel paced the corridor, his mind moving faster than his body could follow.
Sophie.
Lily.
Maya.
Three children caught inside a project conceived before any of them were born.
And a man who looked like Daniel was driving them toward a laboratory built to turn their lives into data.
Eleanor stood motionless beside the wall.
“Daniel,” she said quietly.
“Look at the pendant.””
Maya's silver crescent had been left behind at the farmhouse. Eleanor had seen it in the photograph Daniel showed her earlier, and now she seemed to be remembering something she had tried to forget.
“The second embryo file had a symbol on it,” she continued.
“A crescent moon. I thought it was a clinic logo, but it wasn't. It was the mark used for a separate branch of Project Lark.””
“Lark Two,” Richard said.
Eleanor nodded.
“Lark One studied inherited disease. Lark Two studied how the same genetic markers behaved in different environments. William believed a child raised under controlled conditions could be used to test whether certain traits could be activated or suppressed.””
Daniel felt nausea rising in his throat.
“You're saying he deliberately separated the children?””
“I think he separated the research,” Eleanor replied.
“One child was kept within the family system. The other was placed outside it. He wanted to compare their development.””
“Like they were lab animals.””
“Yes.””
Richard slammed his fist against the wall.
“I knew he was cruel. I didn't know he'd gone this far.””
Daniel turned on him.
“You helped him.””
“I was a coward.””
“You tried to take Lily.””
“I thought I could get her away from him by making him believe I was still loyal. I thought if I controlled the custody order, I could buy time.””
“You don't get to call that protection.””
“I know.””
The admission did nothing to ease Daniel's anger.
Collins looked up from her tablet.
“We have a possible destination. The SUV was picked up by a traffic camera heading east toward the old Whitmore estate. The property was transferred to a shell company two years ago, but the power grid shows a sudden spike in consumption.””
William's estate.
The house where Daniel had spent his childhood.
The house he had not visited since the funeral that was now revealed to be a performance.
“Why would he take them there?”” Daniel asked.
“Because he wants you to come,” Collins said.
“And because he knows the estate better than anyone else.””
Daniel reached for his coat.
Collins blocked the doorway.
“We go together. State police are mobilizing, but we don't know how many people he has inside.””
“Every minute we wait—”
“Every minute we rush in without a plan is another minute he controls.””
Daniel hated that she was right.
He looked at Eleanor.
“Stay here.””
“No.””
“You're injured.””
“And my daughters are missing.””
He had no answer to that.
Richard stepped forward.
“I know the estate's underground access routes. There's an old service tunnel from the greenhouse to the laboratory. William used it to move equipment without alerting the household staff.””
Collins studied him.
“Why should I trust you?””
“You shouldn't. But you can verify everything I tell you.””
She considered him for a moment, then handed him a radio.
“One wrong move, and I'll put you on the ground myself.””
Richard nodded.
“Fair enough.””
They left the facility through a service exit. Collins arranged for Eleanor to travel with a medical team and remain behind the advancing police units. Eleanor objected until Daniel promised he would send word the moment they reached the girls.
He did not promise to return unharmed.
Neither of them would have believed it.
The estate appeared through the trees just after midnight, its stone façade pale beneath the moon. Daniel remembered running through its gardens as a child, though William had rarely allowed him to play without a tutor nearby. He remembered the locked west wing, the rooms no one entered, the strange equipment delivered in unmarked vans.
At the time, he'd believed his father was simply secretive.
Now he understood that secrecy had been the foundation of the entire house.
They approached through the greenhouse.
Richard found the old access panel behind a rusted potting bench. He pressed a sequence of buttons, and a section of wall shifted inward.
The tunnel smelled of damp concrete and machine oil.
“Stay close,” he whispered.
They descended into darkness.
Halfway down the passage, Daniel heard a child's voice.
“Please. I want my mom.””
Maya.
He broke into a run.
At the end of the tunnel, a steel door stood slightly ajar. Beyond it lay a laboratory illuminated by cold white lights. Banks of monitors covered the walls. A glass enclosure occupied the center of the room, filled with medical equipment and cables.
Lily lay in a transparent crib.
Maya stood beside her, holding the baby's tiny hand.
Across the room, Sophie sat in a chair with restraints around her wrists. A woman in a lab coat monitored the screen beside her.
Daniel rushed toward the girls.
“Lily!””
Maya spun around.
“Mr. Whitmore!””
He reached the crib and lifted his daughter into his arms. She stirred, then settled against his chest, her small fingers curling around his shirt.
For one moment, the room disappeared.
Then a voice came from behind him.
“Touching, isn't it?””
Daniel turned.
William stood on a raised platform above the laboratory floor, wearing a dark suit and no visible weapon. Beside him stood Adrian Cross, holding a medical case.
And beside Cross stood the man from the photograph.
The man with Daniel's face.
He was perhaps thirty-five, with a small scar under his right cheekbone and the same dark eyes Daniel saw in the mirror every morning.
William smiled.
“Daniel, meet your brother.””
Richard went white.
“That isn't possible.””
William descended the steps.
“It's perfectly possible. Daniel was the first child created from the original donor line. His genetic material was preserved, studied, and used to establish a second embryo. The resulting child was implanted in a surrogate and placed under a false identity.””
Daniel stared at the stranger.
“Who are you?””
The man looked at him with an expression that was neither hatred nor affection.
“I'm Nathan.””
“Why do you look like me?””
“Because we share the same biological father.””
William spread his hands.
“Not only the same father. The same genetic foundation. Nathan was created to test whether the traits I selected could be reproduced consistently.
Daniel was raised to become a public figure. Nathan was raised outside the family, monitored through intermediaries.””
“You made him,” Daniel said.
“I arranged for his conception.””
“You stole his life.””
William's smile faded.
“I gave him a purpose.””
Nathan's eyes moved toward Sophie.
“And what purpose did you give her?””
William glanced at the restrained girl.
“Sophie was never supposed to exist outside the program. But circumstances changed.””
“Her mother died protecting her,” Daniel said.
“A regrettable complication.””
Maya made a small, furious sound.
“You killed her mother?””
William looked at the child as if he had only just noticed her.
“Her mother interfered with medical procedures she did not understand.””
“She was protecting a baby!””
“And now that baby may help us complete a treatment that could save millions.””
Daniel tightened his hold on Lily.
“Then find another way.””
“I did. For decades. Every trial failed because the genetic markers were incomplete.
Your daughter and Sophie possess complementary variations. Separately, their profiles are insufficient. Together, they may reveal how the treatment can be activated without triggering the neurological damage that destroyed my wife.””
“You want to experiment on them.””
“I want to prevent suffering.””
“You want control.””
William's eyes hardened.
“Control is the only thing that keeps human beings from destroying what they don't understand.””
Richard stepped forward.
“You used us. You told me Daniel was your biological son. You told me our family carried a rare inherited condition. You made me believe every lie.””
“I gave you a role.””
“You gave me a cage.””
William's expression turned cold.
“You were always the weaker one, Richard. That's why I never selected you for the central study.””
Richard's hand trembled around the radio.
Collins's voice crackled through the earpiece.
“Units are in position. Stand by.””
William heard it.
His gaze shifted to Daniel's collar.
“Did you honestly think you could enter my home without being detected?””
He raised his hand.
The laboratory doors slammed shut.
Red lights flashed across the ceiling.
A countdown appeared on the main screen.
*PURGE SEQUENCE: 05:00*
Daniel stared at it.
“What is that?””
Cross answered, his voice shaking.
“An emergency sterilization protocol. The lab will flood with a chemical agent designed to destroy the biological samples.””
“And the people inside?””
Cross didn't answer.
William pressed a control on the platform.
“Bring me the girls, Daniel. You have five minutes. Give me Lily and Sophie, and I'll stop the sequence.””
“You'll kill them anyway.””
“I will save them from a world that would exploit what they are.””
Nathan moved suddenly, stepping between William and the control panel.
“No.””
William's face twisted with disbelief.
“You will obey me.””
Nathan looked at Daniel, then at the two children.
“For the first time in my life, I know what I'm for.””
He drove his fist into the emergency control.
The lights went black.
May you like
A siren screamed.
And in the darkness, someone seized Lily from Daniel's arms.
