Chapter 5: Locker 317

The moment the jet stopped moving, I ordered everyone to remain inside until Thomas confirmed the airport was secure.

Captain Harris opened the cockpit door.

"Mr. Whitmore, airport personnel are waiting outside. They say they're here to escort you to a private terminal.""

"Who requested the escort?""

"They claim it came from your company.""

"Then they can wait.""

I looked through the window.

Three men in dark suits stood beside a black SUV. One held a tablet. Another wore an earpiece and kept looking toward the aircraft.

They appeared professional.

That was what frightened me.

I had spent enough years around private security teams to recognize the difference between men hired to protect someone and men hired to control them.

"Rebecca," I said, "keep the cabin door closed.""

She nodded.

I called Thomas.

"Where are you?""

"Ten minutes away. I've contacted a local police supervisor directly, but I'm still verifying the situation.""

"There's an escort outside claiming to represent my company.""

"Do not go with them.""

"I wasn't planning to.""

"Daniel, listen carefully. I've checked the airfield's security records. The people who diverted your flight are connected to Richard's private security contractor. If they get you into that vehicle, I may not be able to locate you.""

I watched one of the men outside raise his tablet toward the plane.

"Then we'll use another exit.""

"There's a service stairway near the rear cargo compartment. Captain Harris can confirm whether it's accessible.""

I turned to the captain.

He nodded.

"There's a maintenance stairway on the opposite side. It leads to a service hangar.""

"Can you open it?""

"Yes.""

"Do it.""

A few minutes later, we left the aircraft through the service door. Captain Harris led us down a narrow metal staircase into a hangar that smelled of aviation fuel and wet concrete.

Maya carried Lily, with the backpack strapped across her shoulders.

I walked beside them, keeping one hand near my phone.

We reached a side entrance just as a gray sedan pulled into the service road.

Thomas stepped out.

He was in his forties, broad-shouldered, with a scar above his right eyebrow from an incident during his military service. I had trusted him with my family's safety for six years.

When he saw Maya, his expression changed.

"Mr. Whitmore, is that the child?""

"Yes. This is Maya. She's helping us find Eleanor.""

Thomas glanced at the baby.

"And Lily?""

"Safe, for now.""

He opened the rear door.

"Get in. We need to move.""

Maya hesitated.

"Who are you?""

"Thomas Reed. I work for Daniel.""

She looked at me.

"Can we trust him?""

I thought about the men outside the jet, the false flight diversion, and the people who had intercepted Eleanor's calls.

"I believe we can," I said.

"But we're going to verify everything.""

Thomas didn't object.

He simply nodded and handed me a second phone.

"Encrypted connection. No company network. I've also arranged for two independent officers to meet us at a public location.""

"Good.""

As we drove away, I called Natalie again.

This time, she answered with a trembling voice.

"Daniel, I found something.""

"What?""

"Your personal call archive. There are forty-seven incoming calls from Eleanor's number over six weeks. Every one was marked as spam or blocked.""

I closed my eyes.

"Who marked them?""

"The system shows the changes were made using executive administrator credentials.""

"Whose credentials?""

She hesitated.

"Richard's.""

My stomach tightened.

"Send me the records.""

"I already have. Daniel, there's something else. I found an archived voicemail that was never delivered to you.""

"Play it.""

A moment later, Eleanor's voice filled the car.

It was weak, strained, and so familiar that I felt as though someone had opened a wound inside my chest.

"Daniel, it's me. Please answer. I know you may not believe me, but Richard is lying to you. He knows what happened at the institute.

He knows what they did to our daughter. I can't explain over the phone. Please, if you hear this, remember the promise you made me in the garden.""

The message ended.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Maya whispered, "She recorded that the night before she left.""

I looked at her.

"You heard it before?""

"She played it for me once. She said she didn't know whether you'd ever hear it.""

I stared at the road.

The garden.

Eleanor and I had planted a small rose garden behind our first house, long before we became wealthy enough to buy our sprawling estate. On the night Lily was conceived, we had sat there beneath the porch light, talking about the family we hoped to have.

Eleanor had asked me to promise something.

"If our child ever becomes the center of a fight between powerful people," she'd said, "you'll choose the child over everything else. Even the family name.""

I had laughed softly.

"Of course.""

She had taken my hand.

"No, Daniel. Promise me.""

I had promised.

Now I wondered whether she had already known something I hadn't.

"Thomas," I said, "take us to the railway station.""

He glanced at me in the rearview mirror.

"Are you certain? We should get you somewhere secure first.""

"The station is where Eleanor hid the evidence.""

"Then I'll have the police meet us there.""

"No company security. No one connected to Richard. Only the independent officers you mentioned.""

Thomas nodded.

"Understood.""

The abandoned station stood at the edge of an industrial district, its brick walls darkened by decades of rain. Rusted tracks disappeared beneath weeds, and the old platform lights had been removed years ago.

A demolition notice hung on the entrance.

WORK TO BEGIN AT 6:00 A.M.

It was already past midnight.

Thomas checked the street before helping us out.

"Five minutes," he said.

"If anyone approaches, we leave immediately.""

I took Maya's backpack while she carried Lily.

Inside the station, the air smelled of dust and damp wood. Old advertisements peeled from the walls. A clock above the ticket counter had stopped at 4:17.

Maya looked around.

"This is where Eleanor used to come?""

"She came here with me years ago.""

"Did she like it?""

I smiled faintly.

"She loved places people forgot.""

We found the lockers in a narrow corridor behind the old ticket office.

Most had been removed. A handful remained, their doors bent and rusted.

Locker 317 stood near the end.

I inserted the brass key.

It turned with a sharp click.

Inside was a small red notebook wrapped in a plastic bag, a sealed envelope, and a flash drive.

My hands trembled as I removed them.

The notebook was filled with names, dates, and handwritten notes. Some entries referred to the Whitmore Family Reproductive Institute. Others listed payments made through companies I had never heard of.

Near the middle, I found a page marked with Eleanor's name.

*Subject E.W. — genetic compatibility confirmed.*

Below it was another entry.

*Embryo transfer completed under revised authorization.*

I read it twice.

Embryo transfer?

Eleanor had conceived Lily naturally, or so I had always believed.

The next line made my vision blur.

*Donor identity concealed from legal parents.*

I gripped the notebook so tightly that the cover bent.

"What is this?"" I whispered.

Maya stood beside me.

"I don't know.""

I turned another page.

There was a list of initials, medical codes, and dates. One name appeared repeatedly.

Richard Whitmore.

Beside it were financial transfers from a company called Lark Biologics.

I recognized the name from the paper Maya had shown me on the plane.

Project Lark.

My brother had been funding a medical program connected to my daughter's conception.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter in Eleanor's handwriting.

Daniel, if you're reading this, I failed to protect you from the truth.

You need to know that Lily's conception was not what we believed. The records were altered before the procedure. I discovered the truth after she was born, and Richard threatened to expose something about our family if I spoke.

I don't know whether he was telling the truth. I only know that the people involved were willing to destroy my life to keep the records hidden.

The most important evidence is on the flash drive.

But before you watch it, ask yourself one question.

If Lily's biological father is not the man who raised her, what will you do when you discover who he is?

I lowered the letter.

My heart pounded.

For a moment, I could hear nothing but the wind rattling the broken windows.

Then Thomas called from the corridor.

"Daniel! We have company!""

I shoved the notebook into my coat and closed my fist around the flash drive.

Two men had entered the station.

One wore a black security jacket. The other stood behind him, holding a phone.

The first man raised his hands.

"Mr. Whitmore, we need you to come with us.""

"Who sent you?""

"Your brother.""

I stepped in front of Maya and Lily.

"Tell Richard he can speak to my lawyer.""

The man sighed and glanced toward the entrance.

"We were told you'd make this difficult.""

He reached inside his jacket.

Thomas moved immediately, placing himself between us and the intruders.

"Take another step," Thomas warned, "and I'll call the police.""

The second man smiled.

"Go ahead. The local police have already been informed that Mr. Whitmore is suffering from a mental breakdown and has taken his infant daughter without authorization.""

I stared at him.

"What?""

He held up his phone.

A photograph appeared on the screen.

It showed me standing outside the private jet, holding Lily while shouting at Maya.

Someone had captured the image and edited it to make it appear that I was trying to take the baby away from her.

Below it was a news alert draft.

*BILLIONAIRE FATHER IN CUSTODY DISPUTE AFTER UNSTABLE EPISODE.*

Richard wasn't merely trying to recover Lily.

He was building a story that would make me look dangerous, unstable, and unfit to protect my own child.

I turned to Maya.

"Stay behind me.""

She clutched Lily and stepped backward.

Then the station lights flickered.

A door slammed somewhere behind us.

And a familiar voice spoke from the shadows.

"Daniel, you really should have left that locker alone.""

Richard stepped into the corridor.

He wore the same charcoal suit he'd worn at Eleanor's memorial.

On his right hand gleamed a silver ring with a black stone.

He looked at the red notebook beneath my arm.

May you like

Then he smiled.

"Now that you've found the truth, little brother, we can finally discuss what Lily is worth.""
