Chapter 9: The Man Who Wore My Father's Face

The former St. Bartholomew's facility stood behind a rusted iron gate at the edge of a wooded estate.

From the road, it looked abandoned.

The windows were dark. Ivy climbed the brick walls. A faded sign near the entrance warned that trespassing was prohibited.

But two security cameras tracked our car as we approached.

And behind the building, I saw the glow of a generator.

Someone was inside.

Detective Collins arrived three minutes later with four officers and an unmarked vehicle.

She stepped out and approached me.

"Mr. Whitmore, my team will secure the perimeter. You will remain outside until we establish whether anyone inside is armed.""

"I understand.""

"Do you?""

Her tone was sharp enough to make me pause.

"This isn't a rescue mission you can handle by throwing money at the problem. If your wife is being held there, we need to get her out alive. That means following instructions.""

I nodded.

"Understood.""

Collins studied my face.

"Do you recognize the man in the video?""

I handed her my phone.

She watched it once, then again.

"You're saying this is your father?""

"William Whitmore. He supposedly died twenty-nine years ago.""

She looked up.

"Twenty-nine years ago?""

I nodded.

"I was a child. Richard told me our father died in a private clinic. I never saw the body.""

Collins handed the phone to her partner.

"We'll verify the identity before making assumptions.""

"Of course.""

She looked toward the building.

"But if he's alive, this changes everything.""

A radio crackled at her shoulder.

One of the officers reported movement near the rear entrance.

Collins raised her hand.

"Hold position. Nobody enters until we have visual confirmation.""

I watched the building.

For the first time in my life, I was afraid of discovering the truth.

Not because I feared losing money or influence.

Because every answer seemed to threaten the memories that had shaped me.

My father teaching me to ride a bicycle.

My father carrying me on his shoulders during a summer fair.

My father sitting beside my bed after a nightmare, telling me that family was the one thing the world could never take away.

Had any of it been real?

"Mr. Whitmore," Collins said quietly, "I need to ask you something.""

"What?""

"Did your father have any other children?""

"Not that I know of.""

"Could Richard have been adopted?""

I thought of Maya's words.

"Eleanor apparently found documents suggesting both of us were adopted.""

Collins exchanged a glance with her partner.

"That would explain why someone has gone to such lengths to conceal the original records.""

Before I could respond, a light appeared behind an upstairs window.

A figure crossed the room.

Then the light vanished.

Collins raised her radio.

"Possible movement on the second floor. Team Two, confirm.""

Static.

Then a voice answered.

"Team Two to command. Rear entrance is secured. We have a vehicle leaving the east driveway.""

Collins turned sharply.

"Do not pursue without confirmation. Identify the vehicle.""

The officer responded seconds later.

"Black SUV. Two occupants. Unable to identify the driver.""

I watched the SUV disappear between the trees.

My phone rang.

Richard.

I answered.

"Where are you?"" I demanded.

"Somewhere safe.""

"Is Eleanor inside that building?""

"Yes.""

My heart lurched.

"Then tell them to release her.""

"That's not possible.""

"Why?""

"Because she knows too much.""

I stared at the facility.

"You're protecting our father.""

Richard went silent.

Then he spoke softly.

"He's not the man you remember.""

"He's alive.""

"Yes.""

"Why did you lie to me?""

"Because Father was dangerous long before he disappeared.""

I closed my eyes.

"Then why help him?""

"I didn't know what he was doing at first. I was a child when he left. Years later, I discovered that he had continued the research under another name. By then, he controlled people I couldn't reach.""

"You're telling me you were afraid of him?""

"I was trying to keep the family together.""

"By helping him take my daughter?""

Richard's voice sharpened.

"I never wanted Lily harmed.""

"Then what do you want?""

A long silence followed.

Finally, he said, "I want the program destroyed.""

I stared at the phone.

"Then help me get Eleanor out.""

"I can't.""

"Why not?""

"Because if Father discovers I've helped you, he'll kill us both.""

I heard something in his voice that I had never heard before.

Fear.

Not the fear of losing money or power.

The fear of someone who knew exactly what the other person was capable of.

"Richard, where are you?""

"Don't look for me.""

"Tell me what happened to Father.""

"He didn't die. He disappeared after a dispute with the people funding Project Lark. I found him years later, living under a different identity. He told me he'd faked his death to escape people who wanted to control his research.""

"What research?""

"Genetic engineering. Embryo selection. Experiments on families who never knew their children had been chosen for specific traits.""

I felt sick.

"And Lily?""

"She's connected to the original project.""

"How?""

Richard's voice dropped.

"Because someone used your identity to authorize a procedure that was never meant to produce a child.""

I gripped the phone.

"What does that mean?""

"I don't know everything. But Father believes Lily carries a genetic marker that could unlock the final stage of the program.""

"She's a baby!""

"I know!""

For the first time, Richard sounded genuinely distressed.

"I know what she is, Daniel. That's why I tried to get her away from him.""

"By sending armed men to take her?""

"I was trying to frighten you into cooperating.""

"You nearly brought down my plane!""

"I didn't know they'd interfere with the navigation system!""

I stared at the building.

"Who did?""

Richard hesitated.

Then he whispered, "Father.""

The call ended.

I turned toward Detective Collins.

"Someone inside knows we're here. We need to move now.""

She studied me.

"Did your brother confirm that your father is inside?""

"Yes.""

Collins made a decision.

She ordered two officers to secure the rear entrance and sent another pair toward the east wing. She kept me beside her as we approached the main door.

The lock had been forced recently.

Inside, the air smelled of disinfectant and damp plaster.

The corridor was lined with old examination rooms. Some contained broken equipment; others had been fitted with modern security systems.

We passed a room with a glass wall.

Behind it stood a row of refrigerated cabinets.

Each was labeled with a code.

I recognized one immediately.

*LARK-0417.*

The same number engraved inside Eleanor's pendant.

Collins stopped.

"Don't touch anything.""

I stared through the glass.

A folder lay on a metal table beside the cabinets.

My name was written on its cover.

*DANIEL WHITMORE — ORIGINAL PATIENT RECORD.*

My hands went cold.

I stepped closer.

The folder contained a photograph of a newborn baby, a genetic profile, and a hospital form bearing my date of birth.

The name listed under biological father had been blacked out.

But the signature at the bottom was unmistakable.

William Whitmore.

My supposed father.

The man I had buried when I was a child had signed a medical document dated six months after his official death.

Collins leaned over my shoulder.

"Mr. Whitmore, we need to preserve this.""

I barely heard her.

A door slammed at the end of the corridor.

One of the officers shouted.

"Police! Stop!""

Footsteps thundered across the floor.

Then a gunshot cracked through the building.

Collins pulled me behind a concrete pillar.

"Stay down!""

I heard a second shot, followed by the sound of breaking glass.

The officers moved toward the noise.

I remained crouched beside the wall, my heart pounding.

Then a door opened behind us.

A woman stepped into the corridor.

Her hair was streaked with gray. Her face was thinner than I remembered, and a dark bruise marked her cheek.

But her eyes were the same.

"Eleanor.""

She looked at me as if she couldn't believe I was real.

"Daniel.""

I crossed the distance between us and caught her in my arms.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

She pressed her face against my shoulder and began to cry.

"I thought I'd never see you again.""

I held her tighter.

"I'm here. I'm here.""

Then she pulled back and gripped my face with both hands.

"Where's Lily?""

"Safe. Maya is with her.""

Eleanor closed her eyes in relief.

"Thank God.""

I touched her bruised cheek.

"Who did this to you?""

She looked toward the corridor.

"William.""

My stomach twisted.

"He's alive.""

"I know.""

"Why did he fake his death?""

Eleanor swallowed.

"Because he needed everyone to believe the original project had ended. He needed to disappear long enough to rebuild it.""

"What is Project Lark?""

She looked at me with an expression that broke my heart.

"It's the reason you were born.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

"Daniel, you were never supposed to be William Whitmore's son.""

Before I could respond, a loudspeaker crackled overhead.

A man's voice filled the corridor.

Calm.

Measured.

Unmistakably familiar.

"Hello, Daniel.""

I looked up at the ceiling.

William Whitmore continued.

"I see you've finally met your wife.""

A pause.

Then he spoke again.

"Now that the family is together, I believe it's time we discussed what happens to Lily.""

Eleanor grabbed my arm.

"Don't answer him.""

But the loudspeaker continued.

"Daniel, you have one hour to bring the child to me. If you refuse, I'll release the original genetic records to the entire world.""

I looked at Eleanor.

"What records?""

She shook her head, tears gathering in her eyes.

"The records that prove who you really are.""

The loudspeaker clicked off.

Somewhere deeper inside the facility, a heavy metal door began to open.

And Eleanor whispered the truth I had spent my entire life running from.

"Daniel, William didn't choose you to be his son.""

May you like

She gripped my hand.

"He chose you to be the father of a child who would finish what he started.""
