Chapter 10: The Sister Who Carried the Truth
The woman’s words stayed in the air.
“She left it because she knew one day you would need to prove she was still alive.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody even seemed to know how to react.
Because some truths are too impossible to accept.
They don’t enter your mind like normal information.
They crash into it.
I stared at the woman standing in front of me.
My mother’s sister.
A stranger who somehow knew the most important secret of my life.
“You knew?””
My voice barely came out.
“You knew she was alive?””
The woman’s eyes filled with tears.
“My name is Camille.””
She looked at the necklace in Dr. Bennett’s hand.
“I knew Angela was alive longer than anyone.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Then where was she?””
Camille looked at him.
And the sadness on her face answered before her words did.
“She was running.””
“From who?””
Camille looked around the room.
At Vanessa.
At Raymond.
At everyone who had been hiding pieces of the truth.
“From the person who wanted her silent.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
Camille looked at her.
“You know I’m right.””
Marcus turned toward Vanessa.
Again.
Every secret seemed to lead back to her.
“What does she mean?””
Vanessa looked overwhelmed.
“I didn’t know everything.””
Camille’s expression hardened.
“But you knew enough.””
The accusation hit harder than a shout.
I watched Vanessa.
The woman who raised me.
The woman who taught me how to tie my shoes and braid my hair.
The woman who stood beside me at every school event.
A woman who might have known my mother was alive.
My stomach turned.
“You knew?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Nia…”
“Did you know?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I knew she survived.””
The room went silent.
Marcus looked like the floor had disappeared beneath him.
“What?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I found out months after everyone believed she died.””
My hands went numb.
“Months?””
She nodded.
“You never told me.””
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
“Of losing you.””
The words hurt because part of me understood.
And I hated that.
“You don’t get to call that love.””
“I know.””
Her voice cracked.
“I know now.””
I looked at Camille.
“Tell me everything.””
She took a slow breath.
“Angela discovered that someone had been manipulating your father’s business accounts.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“I thought we already knew that.””
Camille shook her head.
“No.””
She looked at him.
“That was only the beginning.””
The room became still.
“What do you mean?””
“Angela discovered the missing money wasn’t being stolen.””
She paused.
“It was being used to hide something else.””
Raymond frowned.
“What?””
Camille looked at him.
“You should know.””
His expression changed.
“Know what?””
“That Angela found records connected to your past.””
Everyone looked at Raymond.
He stepped back.
“No.””
Camille continued.
“She discovered you weren’t the person you claimed to be.””
Raymond’s face turned pale.
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
Nobody answered.
Then Raymond whispered:
“Angela thought I was involved.””
The words shocked me.
“You were?””
“No.””
His answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
Camille watched him carefully.
“Then explain why Angela had evidence against you.””
Raymond looked away.
For the first time, he looked less like someone holding answers.
And more like someone hiding from them.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Everyone keeps talking around the truth.””
His voice broke.
“My wife disappeared.””
He looked at me.
“My daughter grew up believing she was abandoned.””
Then at Vanessa.
“You knew.””
Then Raymond.
“You knew.””
Then Camille.
“You knew.””
He shook his head.
“And I knew nothing.””
The pain in his voice silenced everyone.
I wanted to comfort him.
But I couldn’t.
Not yet.
I was still trying to survive my own heartbreak.
Camille walked toward me.
“Nia.””
I looked at her.
“Your mother loved you.””
My eyes burned.
“Then why didn’t she come back?””
Camille looked down.
“Because she tried.””
The answer destroyed me.
“What?””
“She tried many times.””
My breathing stopped.
“Why didn’t I see her?””
“Because someone made sure you couldn’t.””
The room changed.
“Who?””
Camille looked toward the envelope.
“Your mother wrote the answer.””
I looked down.
The letter.
Still unopened.
Still waiting.
I finally understood why everyone was afraid.
It wasn’t just a letter.
It was a weapon.
A weapon made of truth.
I opened it.
The paper unfolded slowly.
Everyone watched.
I read the first line.
My dearest Nia,
My vision blurred.
Then another sentence appeared.
If you are reading this, it means I failed to come home.
I covered my mouth.
Marcus closed his eyes.
Vanessa began crying.
But I kept reading.
I need you to know one thing before anything else.
I turned the page.
And then I stopped.
Because the next line was written in bold, shaky handwriting.
The person who separated us is someone you trust.
My heart dropped.
I looked up.
Everyone was watching me.
Everyone except one person.
Vanessa.
May you like
Because she wasn’t looking at me.
She was looking at Raymond.
