Chapter 14: The Final Piece of the Puzzle
Nobody spoke.
Dr. Bennett stared at me.
Not angry.
Not surprised.
Just tired.
Like he had been carrying the weight of this moment for years.
“No,” Marcus whispered.
Dr. Bennett closed his eyes.
“I hoped she would never find this.””
My stomach dropped.
“You knew?””
The question came out broken.
“You knew my mother was alive?””
Dr. Bennett looked at me.
“Yes.””
The answer hurt more than any lie before it.
Because he had been the person who gave me the envelope.
The person who stood between me and Vanessa.
The person I believed was finally helping me.
“You knew.””
I repeated it.
He nodded.
“I did.””
“Then why?””
His face tightened.
“Because Angela asked me to wait.””
“Twenty years?””
“Yes.””
I laughed softly.
It wasn’t happiness.
It was disbelief.
“Everyone had a reason.””
I looked around.
“Everyone had an excuse.””
My voice shook.
“But everyone made choices.””
Dr. Bennett lowered his head.
“You’re right.””
That answer surprised me.
No defense.
No explanation.
Just acceptance.
Marcus stepped forward.
“What did you do?””
Dr. Bennett looked at him.
“I helped Angela hide.””
The words hit the room.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Raymond looked shocked.
“You helped her disappear?””
Dr. Bennett nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because she was in danger.””
I looked at the letter.
“From who?””
Dr. Bennett looked at me.
“From the people she trusted.””
I shook my head.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it was true.””
He reached into his briefcase.
And removed a small recorder.
My heart raced.
“What is that?””
“Something Angela left behind.””
Dr. Bennett placed it on the table.
“She recorded a message.””
Nobody moved.
“For who?””
He looked at me.
“For you.””
My hands went cold.
I wasn’t ready.
But I pressed play.
Static filled the gym.
Then a voice.
A voice I hadn’t heard since I was six.
“Nia?””
I broke.
I covered my mouth.
My mother.
Older than my memories.
But still my mother.
“If you’re hearing this, then Dr. Bennett did what I asked.””
Tears fell freely now.
“I’m sorry.””
A pause.
A shaky breath.
“I’m sorry I wasn’t there.””
Marcus turned away, crying.
Angela’s voice continued.
“I need you to know something. I did not leave you.””
I closed my eyes.
“I fought to come back.””
My knees almost gave out.
“I tried.””
The recording crackled.
“But someone made sure I couldn’t.””
The gym was silent except for her voice.
“Nia, the person who caused everything was not trying to hurt me because they hated me.””
A pause.
“They were trying to protect a secret.””
I looked at Dr. Bennett.
At everyone.
“My mother knew.””
Angela continued.
“The secret was that someone in our family was connected to the people who wanted me gone.””
My heart pounded.
Someone in our family.
Then she said:
“Vanessa knows part of the truth.””
Vanessa gasped.
“Marcus knows part of the truth.””
My father closed his eyes.
“Raymond knows part of the truth.””
Raymond looked down.
“And Dr. Bennett knows part of the truth.””
The recorder clicked.
Then silence.
Everyone stared at each other.
Because my mother had just confirmed the worst thing possible.
Nobody had the whole truth.
Everyone only had pieces.
Dr. Bennett spoke quietly.
“She wanted you to find the missing piece.””
I looked at him.
“And what is it?””
He opened the briefcase.
Inside was one final document.
A birth certificate.
Not mine.
Someone else’s.
I looked at the name.
My heart stopped.
Because the person listed on the paper was connected to my family.
Someone who had been missing from every story.
Someone nobody had mentioned.
I looked up.
“Who is this?””
Nobody answered.
Then the gym doors opened.
A police officer stepped inside.
Everyone turned.
The officer looked at Dr. Bennett.
“We need to speak with Nia.””
My heart raced.
“Why?””
The officer held a folder.
“Because we found new evidence connected to Angela’s disappearance.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“What evidence?””
The officer looked at me.
“Your mother’s medical records.””
I froze.
“What about them?””
The officer hesitated.
Then said:
“They show Angela didn’t die twenty years ago.””
May you like
The room stopped.
“She died three days ago.””
