Chapter 11: The Lie That Protected Us

The gym was silent.

But it wasn’t peaceful silence.

It was the silence before something breaks.

I held my mother’s letter.

The words burned into my mind.

The person who separated us is someone you trust.

Someone I trust.

I looked at the people around me.

My father.

My stepmother.

My mother’s friend.

Her sister.

The man who appeared with answers.

Everyone had a reason.

Everyone had a secret.

I lowered the letter.

“Who?””

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Raymond.

His face changed.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

I stepped closer.

“Who did my mother mean?””

Raymond shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

Vanessa laughed softly.

A broken sound.

“That’s the one thing you always say.””

Raymond looked at her.

“Be careful.””

The threat in his voice was quiet.

But everyone heard it.

Camille stepped between them.

“Nia, your mother believed the person responsible was someone close.””

“Close to her?””

“Yes.””

“Close to me?””

Camille hesitated.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt.

I looked at Marcus.

My father looked devastated.

“Nia, I would never—”

“I know.””

The words surprised him.

I did know.

Despite everything.

Despite the secrets.

I knew my father loved me.

But love didn’t always protect people.

Sometimes love made them blind.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You knew she was alive.””

Vanessa wiped her tears.

“Yes.””

“How?””

She sat down slowly.

“I received a letter.””

“From my mother?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Six months after she disappeared.””

My heart pounded.

“And you hid it?””

Vanessa looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Why?””

She looked at him.

“Because Angela asked me not to trust you.””

The room froze.

Marcus looked wounded.

“She said that?””

Vanessa nodded.

“She said she was afraid someone would use you against her.””

I looked at my father.

That sentence hurt.

But it also confused me.

“Why would she think that?””

Nobody answered.

Then Raymond spoke.

“Because Angela knew there was someone manipulating everyone.””

I turned toward him.

“And you still haven’t told us who.””

His jaw tightened.

“I don’t know.””

Camille looked at him.

“You know more than you admit.””

Raymond looked angry.

“You have no idea what I lost.””

Camille stepped closer.

“My sister lost twenty years with her daughter.””

That shut him down.

I looked at the letter again.

More words waited.

I forced myself to continue.

I don’t know who will be standing beside you when you find this.

My hands shook.

But I know they will tell you they were protecting you.

I stopped.

Because every person in the room had said those exact words.

Protecting you.

Please remember this, Nia.

I swallowed.

Protection and control can look the same when you are the person being trapped.

My eyes filled.

Because my mother understood.

She knew.

She knew what it felt like to have choices taken away.

I turned the page.

A name appeared.

Not Raymond.

Not Vanessa.

Someone else.

Someone I had never expected.

I whispered:

“No.””

Marcus looked at me.

“What?””

I couldn’t speak.

I handed him the letter.

He read the name.

And his face changed.

“What?””

Vanessa stood.

“What is it?””

Marcus looked at her.

Then at me.

Then back at the paper.

“It can’t be.””

Camille stepped forward.

“Who?””

Marcus’s hands trembled.

“It says…”

He looked at the name again.

“It says the person who helped separate Angela from Nia was…”

He stopped.

I looked at him.

“Who?””

My father whispered the name.

And the entire room went still.

“Angela’s closest friend.””

I frowned.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

Camille shook her head.

“Who was her closest friend?””

Marcus looked at the letter.

His face became pale.

“I thought she was dead.””

Everyone froze.

“Who?””

Marcus looked up.

And said:

“Her name was Evelyn Carter.””

The same woman who had called me.

The same woman who claimed to be helping my mother.

The same woman who told me not to trust Raymond.

I felt sick.

Because the person who gave me the warning…

might have been the person my mother warned me about.

Then my phone rang.

Evelyn.

Everyone stared.

Nobody moved.

The screen lit up.

Her name appeared.

May you like

And underneath it was a new message.

Don’t believe what the letter says. Angela was forced to write it.
