Chapter 5: The Name She Tried to Bury

I picked up the small piece of paper from the floor.

My hands were shaking.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

My mother’s.

I had spent years searching for anything she left behind.

A note.

A photograph.

A forgotten message.

Anything.

And now, after twenty years, her words were finally in my hands.

But Vanessa looked like she had just seen a ghost.

“Nia,” she whispered.

I looked at her.

“What?””

She took a step forward.

“Don’t.””

The same word.

The same fear.

The same desperation.

I looked down at the paper.

If Vanessa is standing beside you when you read this…

The sentence stopped there.

My mother had known.

She had known Vanessa would be here.

She had known this moment would happen.

“Why did she write your name?”” I asked.

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Marcus looked at her.

“Why?””

Her eyes moved between us.

“I don’t know.””

I almost laughed.

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

She looked hurt.

But I couldn’t tell if it was real.

“You think I wanted this?””

I stared at her.

“I don’t know what you wanted.””

That sentence seemed to break something inside her.

Because for the first time, Vanessa didn’t look angry.

She looked tired.

“I loved you.””

The words surprised me.

“I did.””

I looked away.

“Love doesn’t mean you get to hide someone’s truth.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“From my mother?””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“From what happened after.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“What happened after Angela died?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You really don’t remember?””

His face hardened.

“Remember what?””

She opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

Dr. Bennett interrupted.

“Some conversations should have happened years ago.””

Marcus turned toward him.

“You knew?””

Dr. Bennett didn’t answer.

That was enough.

My father ran a hand over his face.

“How many people knew?””

Nobody spoke.

His voice rose.

“How many people knew my daughter’s life was built on secrets?””

The question echoed through the gym.

I watched him.

And for the first time, I understood something.

My father wasn’t only shocked by Vanessa.

He was shocked by himself.

Because maybe the truth was not that everyone had lied to me.

Maybe everyone had lied to each other.

My phone rang again.

Everyone froze.

Evelyn.

I answered immediately.

“Nia.””

Her voice sounded rushed.

“What happened?””

“The call dropped.””

“I know.””

“How?””

“Because someone interfered.””

I looked around.

Vanessa’s face changed.

“What do you mean?””

Evelyn lowered her voice.

“Your mother trusted very few people.””

“Who did she trust?””

A pause.

Then:

“Me.””

The answer made Vanessa angry.

“She barely knew you.””

Evelyn ignored her.

“Nia, listen carefully. Before your mother died, she gave me copies of everything.””

My heart raced.

“Copies of what?””

“The documents.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“The documents she found.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Nia, don’t listen to her.””

Evelyn continued.

“She discovered Vanessa had been hiding something from your father.””

Marcus went still.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Marcus…”

“No.””

He shook his head.

“Let her finish.””

Evelyn spoke.

“She found out Vanessa had been receiving letters from someone.””

My stomach dropped.

“Who?””

Silence.

Then Evelyn said:

“A man named Raymond Cole.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

Marcus noticed immediately.

“You know him.””

“No.””

“You do.””

“I don’t.””

“You just reacted.””

Vanessa looked trapped.

I felt something inside me break.

Because suddenly this wasn’t just about my mother.

It was about everyone who had been protecting a secret.

“Who is Raymond Cole?””

Nobody answered.

Then Dr. Bennett quietly said:

“He was connected to Angela’s final days.””

The room went silent.

Marcus looked at him.

“How connected?””

Dr. Bennett looked at me.

“I don’t think I’m the person who should answer that.””

I hated those words.

Everyone kept passing the truth around like it was something dangerous.

Something too heavy to hold.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You know, don’t you?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Nia…”

“Tell me.””

“I can’t.””

“Why?””

She looked at the letter.

“Because once you know, you’ll never see your family the same way again.””

I held the paper tighter.

“Maybe I’m tired of seeing a family that isn’t real.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“Your mother wasn’t running away from your father.””

I waited.

“She was running away from me.””

The words hit like a wave.

Marcus stepped back.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at him.

And before she could explain, the gym doors opened.

A man stood there.

Older.

Gray hair.

Dark coat.

Everyone turned.

Dr. Bennett went pale.

“No…”

I looked at the stranger.

“Who are you?””

The man stared at the envelope in my hand.

Then at Vanessa.

May you like

And he said:

“I’m the reason your mother wrote that letter.””
