Chapter 12: The Woman Behind the Warning
The phone kept ringing.
Evelyn Carter.
Her name glowed on the screen.
A name that had meant safety only hours ago.
Now it felt like a question.
I looked at everyone.
Nobody told me what to do.
Nobody could.
Not anymore.
I answered.
“Why?””
There was silence on the other end.
Then Evelyn said:
“Nia.””
My voice shook.
“Why did my mother write your name?””
A pause.
A long one.
“I knew this day would come.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“I was hoping you would never have to know.””
My anger rose.
“Know what?””
Evelyn sighed.
“The truth.””
I looked at the letter.
“The truth says you betrayed my mother.””
Silence.
Then:
“Your mother wrote that because she was afraid.””
“So it’s true?””
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
“She was wrong.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone says that.””
“Nia, listen to me.””
“No.””
My voice echoed through the gym.
“I listened my whole life.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“I listened when people told me my mother left.””
I looked at Marcus.
“I listened when people told me everything was fine.””
I looked at Raymond.
“I listened when people told me they were helping.””
My eyes filled.
“I’m done listening without proof.””
Evelyn became quiet.
Then she said:
“Good.””
The answer surprised me.
“What?””
“Your mother wanted you to question everything.””
I looked at the letter.
“Then why did she accuse you?””
“Because she was trying to protect me.””
Nobody moved.
“What?””
Evelyn continued.
“Angela knew someone was watching her.””
My heart raced.
“She knew she was being followed?””
“Yes.””
“By who?””
A pause.
Then:
“By someone who wanted the letter.””
I looked around.
“Why?””
“Because the letter proves what happened.””
“What happened?””
Evelyn lowered her voice.
“Your mother discovered who was responsible for the accident.””
The word hit me.
Accident.
“What accident?””
Nobody had ever told me there was an accident.
Evelyn continued.
“The night Angela disappeared.””
I looked at Vanessa.
At Marcus.
At everyone.
“She wasn’t taken?””
Another pause.
“She was.””
My heart stopped.
“Then why did you say accident?””
“Because that is what everyone was supposed to believe.””
The gym went silent.
I gripped the phone.
“Evelyn, tell me everything.””
Before she answered, Raymond suddenly stepped forward.
“Nia, hang up.””
Everyone looked at him.
My anger returned.
“You don’t get to tell me what to do.””
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
He didn’t.
Again.
I shook my head.
“Of course.””
Then Evelyn said something that made everyone freeze.
“Raymond is there, isn’t he?””
I looked at him.
“Yes.””
Her voice changed.
“He was never supposed to find you.””
Raymond’s face hardened.
“That’s not true.””
Evelyn ignored him.
“Nia, get away from him.””
“Why?””
“Because he’s the reason your mother disappeared.””
The accusation exploded through the room.
Marcus grabbed Raymond’s arm.
“What?””
Raymond pulled away.
“No.””
Camille looked terrified.
“Raymond…”
“I didn’t do this.””
Vanessa stared at him.
“You lied to me.””
He looked at her.
“I was trying to fix it.””
“What did you do?””
He had no answer.
That was enough.
I stepped back.
Everything inside me screamed.
But then Raymond said something quietly.
Something that changed everything.
“Ask Evelyn why Angela wrote her name.””
Everyone froze.
I looked at the phone.
Evelyn went silent.
“Evelyn?””
No answer.
“Why?””
The silence stretched.
Then Evelyn whispered:
“Because Angela knew I would be the only person who could protect you.””
I swallowed.
“Protect me from who?””
Another pause.
Then she said:
“From your father.””
The room stopped.
Marcus looked at me.
“No.””
Evelyn continued:
“Your father didn’t know the whole truth.””
I looked at Marcus.
His face was filled with shock.
“Then what don’t I know?””
Evelyn’s voice became softer.
“Angela discovered that the accident that night…”
A pause.
“Was caused by someone trying to kill her.””
My heart pounded.
“And who was driving the car?””
Nobody moved.
Evelyn answered.
“The person who was supposed to be protecting her.””
I looked at my father.
May you like
And for the first time that night…
Marcus looked afraid of himself.
