Chapter 3: The Voice From the Past

I couldn’t speak.

The gym suddenly felt too large.

Too bright.

The microphone in front of me picked up every breath I took.

“Nia?”” the voice said again.

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Who is this?””

Nobody moved.

Marcus stared at me.

Vanessa stared at the phone.

And Dr. Bennett looked like he had just seen a ghost.

The voice on the line was calm.

Older.

A woman.

“I know you don’t know me.””

My heart raced.

“Then how do you know my name?””

A pause.

Then:

“Because I knew your mother.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Hang up.””

I turned.

The anger in her voice was immediate.

Not fear this time.

Desperation.

“Who is that?”” I asked.

She didn’t answer.

The woman on the phone heard her.

“Vanessa is there, isn’t she?””

My blood went cold.

Marcus looked at his wife.

“How does she know Vanessa?””

Vanessa reached toward me.

“Nia, give me the phone.””

I moved back.

“No.””

For once, she listened.

She stopped.

The woman continued.

“Your mother left instructions. If the envelope was opened, I was supposed to call.””

I looked at the sealed paper in my other hand.

“How do you know about the envelope?””

“Because I helped her prepare it.””

My eyes filled with tears.

“Who are you?””

“My name is Evelyn Carter.””

The name meant nothing.

But Vanessa reacted.

She stepped back.

Just slightly.

Enough for me to notice.

“Vanessa?”” Marcus asked.

She shook her head.

“No.””

“You know that name.””

“No.””

“You do.””

Her silence answered for her.

I looked at Dr. Bennett.

“Who is Evelyn Carter?””

He hesitated.

And that hesitation made me angry.

“Everyone knows something except me.””

My voice broke.

“You all have pieces of my life, and I’m the only person who doesn’t know the story.””

Marcus looked down.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

“From what?””

He had no answer.

I turned back to the phone.

“Evelyn, tell me.””

The woman sighed.

“Your mother loved you more than anything.””

I closed my eyes.

I had waited twenty years to hear those words from someone who truly knew.

“But she was afraid.””

“Of what?””

Another pause.

“Of what Vanessa would do if the truth came out.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“That’s a lie.””

The phone captured her voice.

Evelyn replied immediately.

“Vanessa, you know exactly what happened.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

Marcus looked at her.

“What happened?””

No answer.

The question hung in the air.

I opened the envelope slightly wider.

A corner of the letter appeared.

My mother’s handwriting.

My hands trembled.

Evelyn spoke again.

“Nia, listen carefully.””

I looked at the phone.

“Your mother didn’t leave that letter because she wanted to hurt anyone.””

“Then why?””

“Because she knew one day you would need proof.””

“Proof of what?””

Silence.

Then Evelyn said:

“Proof that you were never supposed to be raised by Vanessa.””

The gym went quiet.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa’s face lost all color.

“No.””

The word came out broken.

I stared at her.

“What did she mean?””

Vanessa suddenly moved toward me.

Marcus grabbed her shoulder.

“Stop.””

“Get away from me!””

“You need to explain.””

She looked at him.

Then at me.

For the first time, I saw regret.

Real regret.

Not an apology.

Not guilt.

Something worse.

The realization that she couldn’t undo what was coming.

Evelyn whispered through the phone:

“Nia, whatever you do, don’t let Vanessa take that letter.””

I looked down.

The envelope was still in my hand.

Then Vanessa said something that made everyone freeze.

“She doesn’t know the whole truth.””

I stared at her.

“What truth?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

And after twenty years of silence, Vanessa finally said the one thing I never expected.

“Your mother didn’t die the way you were told.””

The air left my lungs.

Marcus stepped back.

Dr. Bennett closed his eyes.

And the letter in my hand suddenly felt heavier.

Because the secret wasn’t just about what my mother left behind.

It was about what happened before she was gone.

I looked at the half-open envelope.

At my mother’s handwriting.

At Vanessa’s terrified face.

May you like

And I knew there was no going back.

Because whatever was inside that letter had the power to destroy the family I thought I knew.
