Chapter 10: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Gone

Aaliyah stopped breathing.

The words echoed through the storage hallway.

*Your father is alive.*

For eighteen years, she had carried the weight of believing she was abandoned.

For eighteen years, she had imagined a man who chose not to come back.

A man who forgot her.

A man who walked away.

And now a stranger was standing in front of her, saying the impossible.

Derrick stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

The person didn’t answer immediately.

They stepped closer into the light.

Aaliyah recognized her.

Her heart dropped.

“Ms. Carter?””

The older woman nodded.

She was one of her mother’s closest friends.

The woman who used to bring Aaliyah birthday gifts when she was little.

The woman who disappeared from their lives years ago.

Grandma Ruth whispered:

“Angela…”

Angela Carter looked at the group with sadness in her eyes.

“I knew this day would come.””

Aaliyah stared.

“You knew?””

Angela looked down.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt more than the mystery.

“You knew my father was alive?””

Angela swallowed.

“Yes.””

Aaliyah stepped back.

“How many people knew?””

Nobody answered.

That silence felt like another betrayal.

She looked at Derrick.

“You knew?””

Derrick immediately shook his head.

“No.””

“Then why isn’t that surprising?””

The words cut him.

Angela stepped forward.

“Aaliyah, listen to me.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“I have listened my entire life.””

She held up the folder.

“I listened when they said he left.””

She touched the medal.

“I listened when they said I had to accept it.””

Her eyes filled.

“And now I’m supposed to listen when someone says he was alive this whole time?””

Angela looked heartbroken.

“You deserve to be angry.””

“I am.””

Aaliyah wiped her tears.

“But I need answers.””

Angela nodded.

“Your father never abandoned you.””

“Where is he?””

Angela hesitated.

That hesitation terrified Aaliyah.

“Where is he?””

“He’s been watching from a distance.””

Derrick looked shocked.

“What?””

Angela turned toward him.

“You didn’t know?””

Derrick shook his head.

“No.””

Aaliyah looked between them.

“What does that mean?””

Angela took a deep breath.

“Marcus wanted to come home.””

Aaliyah’s eyes filled.

“Then why didn’t he?””

Angela looked at the folder.

“Because someone made sure he couldn’t.””

The hallway became silent.

Grandma Ruth stepped forward.

“Who?””

Angela looked at her.

“You already know.””

Nobody moved.

Aaliyah whispered:

“Vanessa.””

Angela nodded.

The name felt heavier this time.

Not a suspicion.

A reality.

“What did she do?””

Angela looked away.

“Your father discovered that Vanessa was involved in something illegal.””

Derrick frowned.

“Involved with what?””

Angela looked at him.

“You know about the missing money.””

Derrick froze.

“Yes.””

“You don’t know the whole story.””

Aaliyah felt her heart race.

“Tell me.””

Angela looked at the folder.

“Marcus found evidence that Vanessa had been moving money through fake accounts.””

Derrick shook his head.

“No.””

Angela looked at him.

“You always wanted to believe she wasn’t capable of it.””

Derrick didn’t answer.

Because he knew.

Aaliyah looked at the documents.

“And my father found out.””

“Yes.””

“And then?””

Angela’s expression changed.

“Then Vanessa found out that Marcus knew.””

Aaliyah’s fingers tightened.

“What happened?””

Angela looked toward the exit.

“Your father tried to expose everything.””

“Did she hurt him?””

Angela didn’t answer.

But her silence was enough.

Derrick stepped back.

“No…”

Angela continued.

“Marcus survived.””

Aaliyah looked at her.

“Survived what?””

Angela’s voice dropped.

“The night Vanessa tried to make everyone believe he was gone.””

Aaliyah felt dizzy.

The pieces were coming together.

The missing father.

The fear.

The threats.

The secrets.

“Where is he now?””

Angela looked at her.

“He’s waiting for you.””

Aaliyah’s eyes widened.

“Waiting?””

Angela nodded.

“He wanted to see you.””

“Then why didn’t he?””

Angela looked at Derrick.

“Because Marcus believed someone was still watching your family.””

Derrick looked away.

Aaliyah noticed.

“You knew something.””

Derrick closed his eyes.

“I knew your father was afraid.””

“And you said nothing?””

“I thought he was protecting you.””

Aaliyah shook her head.

“Everyone keeps protecting me from my own life.””

Angela reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small envelope.

Aaliyah recognized the handwriting immediately.

Her mother’s.

“This is for you.””

Aaliyah stared.

“Another letter?””

Angela nodded.

“Your mother wrote it after Marcus disappeared.””

Aaliyah took it carefully.

“What does it say?””

Angela looked at her.

“The truth about why Marcus stayed away.””

Aaliyah opened the envelope.

Her hands shook.

The first line made her freeze.

My daughter, if you ever meet your father again, know that he never stopped loving you.

Aaliyah covered her mouth.

Then she read the next sentence.

But before you forgive him, you need to know what he sacrificed.

Aaliyah looked up.

“What did he sacrifice?””

Angela’s face became serious.

“Everything.””

Suddenly, Derrick’s phone rang.

Everyone looked.

He checked the screen.

His face turned pale.

Aaliyah noticed.

“Who is it?””

Derrick slowly raised his eyes.

“It’s Vanessa.””

The phone kept ringing.

Nobody moved.

Then a message appeared.

Derrick read it.

And his hands began shaking.

“What?””

Aaliyah stepped closer.

“What does it say?””

May you like

Derrick looked at her.

“She found him.””
