Chapter 9: The Storage Unit Left Behind

The message changed everything.

Aaliyah stared at the screen.

Not because she believed Vanessa.

Because she understood what the message meant.

Vanessa was no longer trying to hide the truth.

She was trying to control it.

“She’s threatening me.””

Jasmine nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Aaliyah looked at her.

“And you knew she could do this?””

Jasmine shook her head.

“No.””

Her eyes filled.

“I didn’t know my mother was capable of this.””

Derrick looked at the message.

“She’s desperate.””

Grandma Ruth looked at him.

“You know why.””

Derrick didn’t answer.

Aaliyah noticed.

Again.

That silence.

That hesitation.

Everyone knew something.

Everyone except her.

She picked up the medal.

“Take me to the storage unit.””

Derrick immediately said:

“No.””

Aaliyah looked at him.

“Why?””

“It could be dangerous.””

She smiled sadly.

“You keep proving my point.””

Derrick stopped.

She stepped closer.

“I’m already involved.””

Her voice lowered.

“My entire life is involved.””

Grandma Ruth nodded.

“She’s right.””

Derrick looked defeated.

After a long moment, he grabbed his jacket.

“Then we go together.””

They left the house before sunrise.

The city was quiet.

The kind of quiet that came before something broke.

Jasmine sat in the back seat.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, she whispered:

“Aaliyah.””

Aaliyah looked at her.

“I’m sorry.””

The apology surprised her.

“For what?””

Jasmine looked out the window.

“For making you feel like you didn’t belong.””

Aaliyah said nothing.

Jasmine continued.

“I thought because my mom loved me, everything she did was right.””

Aaliyah looked down.

“And now?””

Jasmine swallowed.

“Now I think I was just another person she controlled.””

The words stayed with Aaliyah.

Because she understood that feeling.

They arrived at the storage facility twenty minutes later.

Rows of metal doors stretched down the hallway.

Derrick stopped at one.

Number 214.

Aaliyah looked at him.

“You remember the number?””

He nodded.

“I never forgot.””

Grandma Ruth handed Aaliyah the key.

Aaliyah inserted it.

It fit.

The lock clicked.

Everyone froze.

The door slowly opened.

Inside was darkness.

Derrick turned on the light.

The room was small.

But packed with memories.

Boxes.

Photographs.

Old documents.

Aaliyah stepped inside.

And immediately saw something that made her stop.

A framed picture.

Her mother.

Marcus.

And baby Aaliyah.

Her father was smiling.

Not like someone who planned to leave.

Like someone who was happy.

Aaliyah touched the glass.

“He loved me.””

Grandma Ruth stood beside her.

“Yes.””

Aaliyah wiped her eyes.

“Then why did everyone let me believe he didn’t?””

Nobody answered.

She searched through the boxes.

Old notebooks.

Receipts.

Letters.

Then she found a folder.

On the front was one word.

*VANESSA.*

Derrick froze.

“Aaliyah…”

She opened it.

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

And one handwritten note.

She read it aloud.

“If something happens to me, look at the person closest to you.””

Her breathing stopped.

Grandma Ruth covered her mouth.

Derrick looked terrified.

Aaliyah turned the page.

There was another sentence.

“Vanessa knows where Marcus is.””

The room went silent.

Then suddenly—

A loud crash echoed outside.

Everyone turned.

Someone had slammed the storage hallway door.

Derrick moved toward the entrance.

“Stay here.””

But Aaliyah followed.

They stepped into the hallway.

At the far end stood a person.

Watching them.

Aaliyah’s heart raced.

The figure slowly stepped into the light.

It wasn’t Vanessa.

It wasn’t Jasmine.

It was someone Aaliyah never expected.

Someone from her own family.

And they said four words that changed everything.

“Your father is alive.””
