Chapter 3: The Name They Tried to Erase

The graduation celebration continued around them.

Music played near the stage.

Students laughed.

Parents took pictures.

But Aaliyah felt trapped inside a moment that nobody else could see.

Grandma Ruth held the letter against her chest.

Vanessa stood frozen.

Derrick looked like he wanted to speak but didn’t know where to begin.

Aaliyah looked between them.

“Who was supposed to find out?””

Nobody answered.

Her voice became stronger.

“Who?””

Grandma Ruth looked at Derrick.

Then Vanessa.

Then back at Aaliyah.

“Your mother loved you more than anything.””

Aaliyah’s eyes filled.

“I know.””

“No,” Grandma Ruth said softly.

“You don’t know everything she sacrificed.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“That letter doesn’t change anything.””

Grandma Ruth looked at her.

“It changes everything.””

Aaliyah watched Vanessa’s jaw tighten.

For years, Vanessa had always been composed.

Perfect hair.

Perfect clothes.

Perfect smile.

But now that smile was gone.

Aaliyah remembered every time she had been told not to ask questions.

Every time someone changed the subject when she mentioned her father.

Every time she looked at old photographs and felt like part of her story was missing.

She looked at Derrick.

“Tell me about Marcus.””

Derrick lowered his eyes.

Aaliyah waited.

Still nothing.

Her voice cracked.

“Dad.””

Finally, he spoke.

“Your father was…”

He stopped.

Grandma Ruth finished for him.

“Brave.””

Derrick looked at his mother.

She continued.

“He was the kind of man who kept promises.””

Aaliyah looked at the medal.

“Then why wasn’t he here?””

The question hurt everyone.

Derrick closed his eyes.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

Aaliyah stared at him.

“By lying?””

Derrick flinched.

Vanessa quickly said:

“Derrick did what he thought was best.””

Aaliyah turned.

“You don’t get to defend him.””

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“You should be careful.””

The words sounded like a warning.

Not advice.

Grandma Ruth noticed.

“Aaliyah, don’t listen to fear.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””

Grandma Ruth stepped closer.

“I know exactly what I’m talking about.””

The two women stared at each other.

Aaliyah felt like she was watching a battle that started long before she was old enough to understand it.

Jasmine looked uncomfortable now.

“Mom, what is happening?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Aaliyah noticed that.

The silence was an answer itself.

Grandma Ruth finally handed the letter to Aaliyah.

“Your mother wrote this for you.””

Aaliyah unfolded it carefully.

The paper was old.

Her hands shook.

She read the first line.

My beautiful Aaliyah…

Her vision blurred.

It was her mother’s handwriting.

The same handwriting from birthday cards.

The same handwriting from notes left on the kitchen counter.

Her mother was suddenly alive again through every curve of every letter.

Aaliyah whispered:

“She knew I would find this?””

Grandma Ruth nodded.

“She hoped you would.””

Aaliyah continued reading.

But before she could reach the next paragraph, Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

“Give me that.””

Everyone turned.

Aaliyah pulled the letter closer.

“No.””

Vanessa stopped.

For the first time, Aaliyah saw something she had never seen before.

Vanessa was afraid of her.

“Aaliyah,” Vanessa said quietly, “you don’t understand what you’re opening.””

Aaliyah looked at the medal.

Then the letter.

Then Vanessa.

“I think I’m finally starting to.””

Derrick stepped forward.

“Vanessa…”

She looked at him.

“You promised.””

The words were quiet.

But they destroyed the room.

Aaliyah stared.

“Promised what?””

Vanessa immediately looked away.

Derrick’s face went pale.

Grandma Ruth gripped Aaliyah’s shoulder.

“Baby, listen to me.””

Aaliyah looked down at the letter again.

At the bottom of the page, beneath her mother’s name, there was something written in a different color ink.

A name.

Aaliyah froze.

Grandma Ruth saw it.

Her expression changed.

“Oh no…”

“What?”” Aaliyah asked.

Grandma Ruth reached for the paper.

But it was too late.

Aaliyah had already read it.

And the name on the page was not Marcus.

It was someone standing right in front of her.

Someone who had spent years pretending not to know the truth.

Aaliyah slowly lifted her eyes toward Derrick.

“Dad…”

Derrick looked terrified.

May you like

And behind him, Vanessa whispered:

“Now you know why he could never come home.””
