Chapter 14: The Last Secret Her Mother Protected
The silence after Vanessa’s words felt heavier than anything before.
Aaliyah looked at Derrick.
She didn’t want to ask.
Because part of her already knew.
There was another truth.
Another piece everyone had hidden.
“What is it?””
Derrick looked at the ground.
“Aaliyah…”
“No.””
Her voice was tired.
Not angry.
Just tired.
“I can’t keep discovering my life one secret at a time.””
Grandma Ruth stepped forward.
“Derrick.””
He looked at his mother.
She shook her head.
“She deserves everything.””
Derrick nodded slowly.
“You’re right.””
He looked at Aaliyah.
“Your mother knew about Marcus’s evidence.””
Aaliyah frowned.
“I know.””
“No.””
Derrick swallowed.
“She helped him collect it.””
Everyone went silent.
Marcus looked shocked.
“What?””
Derrick nodded.
“Your mother wasn’t just trying to protect you.””
He looked at Aaliyah.
“She was trying to expose Vanessa.””
Aaliyah felt tears forming.
“My mother was fighting?””
“Yes.””
Derrick’s voice broke.
“She was stronger than any of us.””
Vanessa scoffed.
“She was reckless.””
Aaliyah turned.
“Why?””
Vanessa looked at her.
“Because she thought being right mattered more than being safe.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“She was protecting our daughter.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“And look what it cost her.””
The words froze everyone.
Aaliyah’s face changed.
“What does that mean?””
Nobody answered.
Then Marcus whispered:
“Vanessa.””
Vanessa looked away.
Aaliyah felt cold.
“What happened to my mother?””
Derrick closed his eyes.
“She was never supposed to be alone that night.””
Aaliyah’s voice shook.
“What night?””
The night.
The same phrase everyone avoided.
The night everything changed.
Marcus looked at her.
“I was supposed to meet your mother.””
Aaliyah stared.
“After I escaped.””
Her breath caught.
“You escaped?””
Marcus nodded.
“I got away from Vanessa’s people.””
Aaliyah felt dizzy.
“People?””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“She wasn’t working alone.””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
For the first time, real fear appeared.
Marcus continued.
“I was going to take your mother and you somewhere safe.””
Aaliyah whispered:
“But?””
Marcus looked down.
“But I never made it.””
Grandma Ruth covered her mouth.
Aaliyah looked at Derrick.
“What happened?””
Derrick’s eyes filled with tears.
“I found your mother’s car.””
Aaliyah stopped.
“Where?””
“Near the highway.””
Her heart broke.
“Was she…”
Derrick shook his head quickly.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
“No?””
“She survived.””
Aaliyah froze.
“What?””
Derrick’s voice became barely audible.
“She survived.””
The world seemed to stop.
“Then where is she?””
Nobody answered.
Aaliyah looked at Marcus.
Then Grandma Ruth.
Then Derrick.
Finally, Derrick whispered:
“Your mother disappeared too.””
Aaliyah felt like the ground moved.
Her mother.
The woman she believed she lost.
Was she alive?
“Where is she?””
Derrick looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa’s face changed.
And Aaliyah saw it.
Recognition.
Fear.
“You know.””
Vanessa looked away.
Aaliyah stepped toward her.
“You know where my mother is.””
Vanessa stayed silent.
Aaliyah’s voice broke.
“Tell me.””
Vanessa finally looked at her.
“She chose to disappear.””
Aaliyah stared.
“No.””
“She did.””
“Why?””
Vanessa’s expression softened slightly.
Not with kindness.
With something closer to regret.
“Because she knew the truth would destroy you.””
Marcus shook his head.
“That’s not why.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You weren’t there.””
Aaliyah looked between them.
“Where is she?””
Vanessa said nothing.
Then her phone rang.
Everyone froze.
She looked at the screen.
Her face changed.
Aaliyah noticed.
“What is it?””
Vanessa slowly answered.
Nobody could hear the voice on the other end.
But Vanessa’s expression changed from anger…
to fear.
Then she whispered:
“She’s awake?””
Aaliyah’s heart stopped.
Vanessa looked up.
And everyone heard the next words.
“The hospital?””
Aaliyah stepped forward.
“Who’s at the hospital?””
Vanessa slowly lowered the phone.
Nobody spoke.
May you like
Then she said the words Aaliyah had spent eighteen years wishing to hear.
“Your mother.””
