Chapter 12: The Woman Who Buried the Truth

Vanessa stood outside the house like she belonged there.

Like she hadn’t spent years hiding behind smiles.

Like she wasn’t the person who turned Aaliyah’s childhood into a question mark.

Aaliyah stared through the window.

The woman who told her she was unwanted.

The woman who mocked her mother’s dress.

The woman who tried to erase her father.

Was standing outside.

Marcus moved closer.

“Stay behind me.””

Aaliyah looked at him.

“No.””

He turned.

“Aaliyah.””

“I’m done hiding.””

Marcus looked at his daughter.

And something changed in his expression.

Pride.

Pain.

Love.

He nodded.

“Okay.””

Derrick stepped forward.

“We need to call the police.””

Vanessa knocked on the door.

Nobody moved.

Then her voice came through.

“Marcus.””

Aaliyah felt a chill.

Vanessa sounded calm.

Too calm.

“You know she’s here.””

Marcus looked at the door.

“Yes.””

Vanessa laughed softly.

“After all these years, you still choose drama.””

Aaliyah opened the door before anyone could stop her.

Everyone reacted.

“Aaliyah!””

But she stepped outside.

Vanessa looked at her.

For a moment, neither woman spoke.

Then Vanessa smiled.

“There she is.””

Aaliyah stared.

“You knew.””

Vanessa’s smile faded.

“You don’t understand.””

“That’s what everyone says.””

Vanessa sighed.

“You think this is simple.””

“No.””

Aaliyah looked at Marcus behind her.

“I think you made it complicated.””

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“You have no idea what your father did.””

Aaliyah stepped forward.

“Then tell me.””

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

“He destroyed everything.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“You always thought you were the hero.””

Aaliyah watched them.

There was history here.

Years of anger.

Years of secrets.

Vanessa continued.

“You were going to ruin all of us.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You ruined yourself.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

For a second, the mask slipped.

Aaliyah saw it.

Guilt.

Marcus spoke quietly.

“You stole money.””

Vanessa looked away.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

“I found the records.””

“You should have stayed quiet.””

The words came out instantly.

Everyone froze.

Vanessa realized her mistake.

Aaliyah stared.

“You just admitted it.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“I admitted nothing.””

But it was too late.

The truth had already cracked.

Marcus stepped forward.

“You threatened my daughter.””

Vanessa looked at Aaliyah.

“I was trying to protect her.””

Aaliyah laughed sadly.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You were protecting yourself.””

Vanessa’s expression became angry.

“You think your father is innocent?””

Aaliyah looked at Marcus.

Then back at Vanessa.

“I think I deserve the truth.””

Vanessa went quiet.

Then she said:

“Ask him why he disappeared.””

Aaliyah turned.

Marcus looked away.

That reaction scared her.

“Dad?””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“I made mistakes.””

“What mistakes?””

He looked at her.

“The night I disappeared…”

He stopped.

Vanessa smiled slightly.

“Tell her.””

Marcus looked devastated.

“I trusted the wrong person.””

Aaliyah waited.

“Who?””

Marcus looked directly at Vanessa.

“Your father.””

Everyone froze.

Derrick.

The man who had raised her.

The man standing behind her.

Aaliyah slowly turned.

“What?””

Derrick looked horrified.

“Aaliyah…”

Marcus continued.

“He was the reason I couldn’t come home.””

Aaliyah stared at Derrick.

Her entire world shifted again.

Because the man she thought betrayed her by hiding the truth…

May you like

May have been the man who helped take her father away.

And Derrick’s silence was the only answer she needed.
