Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Old Medal

Aaliyah couldn’t move.

She stood beneath the bright graduation lights, surrounded by balloons, cameras, and families celebrating their children.

But suddenly, the entire room felt unfamiliar.

The woman who raised her was standing ten feet away with fear written across her face.

Her father looked like a stranger.

And Grandma Ruth was holding a medal that had somehow opened a door to a past nobody wanted her to see.

“Aaliyah, sweetheart…”

Derrick reached toward her.

She stepped back.

Not because she hated him.

Because she didn’t know who he was anymore.

“You knew?”” she asked.

Her voice was quiet.

But everyone heard it.

Derrick froze.

“Knew what?””

“That my father didn’t leave?””

Vanessa immediately interrupted.

“This is not the place for this conversation.””

Aaliyah looked at her.

“For years, you told me he walked away.””

Vanessa forced a calm smile.

“Because that’s what happened.””

Grandma Ruth shook her head.

“No.””

The single word carried more weight than Vanessa expected.

Grandma Ruth held the medal up.

“This belonged to Marcus.””

Aaliyah’s breathing changed.

She had heard the name before.

Only once.

A faded photograph hidden inside an old box under her mother’s bed.

A man smiling beside her mother.

A man holding baby Aaliyah.

Her mother had never spoken about him after that.

Aaliyah looked at Grandma Ruth.

“Who was Marcus?””

Grandma Ruth swallowed.

“He was your father.””

Derrick looked away.

That small movement hurt Aaliyah more than any answer.

She stared at him.

“Dad?””

Derrick rubbed his forehead.

“Aaliyah, there are things you don’t understand.””

“Then explain them.””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Vanessa stepped between them.

“Derrick, this needs to stop.””

Aaliyah looked at her.

“Why are you scared?””

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“I’m not scared.””

But her voice betrayed her.

Grandma Ruth noticed too.

She moved closer to Aaliyah.

“When your mother was alive, she wanted you to know the truth.””

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“Ruth.””

Grandma Ruth ignored her.

“She kept this medal because she believed one day you would need proof.””

Aaliyah looked down at the medal.

The metal was scratched from years of being hidden away.

“How could this prove anything?””

Grandma Ruth turned it over carefully.

“Because Marcus had one made for a reason.””

Derrick suddenly looked alarmed.

“Mom.””

Everyone looked at him.

Aaliyah’s eyes narrowed.

“Why did you say it like that?””

Derrick looked uncomfortable.

“I just mean… this is complicated.””

“No,” Aaliyah said.

“It’s simple.””

Her voice shook.

“You all knew something about my father.””

Nobody answered.

The photographer quietly lowered his camera.

The nearby families pretended not to stare, but everyone could feel the tension.

Jasmine crossed her arms.

“I don’t understand why everyone is acting like this is some big mystery.””

Aaliyah looked at her stepsister.

“Because apparently my whole life has been one.””

Jasmine rolled her eyes.

“You always make everything dramatic.””

Grandma Ruth looked at Jasmine.

“Child, you have no idea what happened.””

Vanessa grabbed Jasmine’s arm.

“We’re leaving.””

Aaliyah watched them turn away.

“No.””

Vanessa stopped.

Aaliyah held the medal tightly.

“You don’t get to walk away.””

The crowd around them became silent.

Vanessa slowly turned.

For a second, Aaliyah saw the woman who had always controlled every situation.

Then she saw something else.

Fear.

“What do you want?”” Vanessa asked.

Aaliyah stared at her.

“I want the truth.””

Grandma Ruth reached into her purse.

She pulled out a small envelope.

Aaliyah’s eyes widened.

“What is that?””

Grandma Ruth looked down.

“Something your mother gave me years ago.””

Vanessa’s face changed instantly.

“Where did you get that?””

The question came too fast.

Too desperate.

Aaliyah noticed.

Grandma Ruth held the envelope tighter.

“Your mother told me never to open it unless Aaliyah found this medal.””

Aaliyah’s heart raced.

“Why?””

Grandma Ruth looked at her.

“Because she knew someone would try to hide the truth from you.””

Derrick stepped forward.

“Mom, please.””

Grandma Ruth shook her head.

“No more secrets.””

She slowly opened the envelope.

Inside was a folded piece of paper.

Everyone leaned closer.

Aaliyah watched Grandma Ruth unfold it.

Then Grandma Ruth’s expression changed.

Her eyes moved across the page.

Her hand covered her mouth.

“What is it?”” Aaliyah asked.

Grandma Ruth looked up.

May you like

And before she could answer, Vanessa whispered something that made Aaliyah’s blood run cold.

“He was never supposed to find out…”
