Chapter 1: The Children at Gate 14

Vanessa abandoned two five-year-old children at an airport, but the most horrifying part wasn't that she walked away.

It was what one of the children whispered to a decorated military colonel ten minutes later.

“Sir, our mommy said we're not allowed to tell anyone who we really are.””

Colonel Marcus Hale had spent twenty-two years in the military. He had witnessed battlefield injuries, interrogated men who lied without blinking, and stood beside families receiving the worst news of their lives.

But nothing prepared him for the sight of two tiny children sitting alone beneath the enormous windows of Terminal B.

Maya and Noah looked impossibly small against the chaos of the airport.

Their backpacks sat between them. Maya wore a cream cardigan and pink sneakers. Noah clutched a green dinosaur plush toy so tightly that its fabric had twisted beneath his fingers.

Marcus had been walking toward Gate 18 with Lieutenant Daniel Reeves when Maya's scream cut through the boarding announcements.

“Mommy, please! I promise I'll be good!””

Marcus stopped.

A woman in a beige coat was pulling a silver suitcase toward Gate 14. She didn't turn around.

Maya scrambled off the bench and chased her.

The woman spun around just long enough to shove the little girl backward.

“Stay where I left you, Maya!””

The child stumbled, catching herself against the bench.

“Mommy!””

Vanessa leaned down, her face hard and impatient.

“You will sit there until someone comes. If you embarrass me again, you'll be sorry.””

Then she walked away.

Noah didn't move. His eyes followed the woman until she disappeared behind a cluster of travelers.

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

“Daniel, stay here.””

“Sir?””

“Keep your eyes on those children.””

Marcus changed direction.

By the time he reached the bench, Maya had collapsed beside her brother, covering her face with both hands.

He lowered himself to one knee, careful not to crowd them.

“Hey, sweetheart. My name is Marcus. Can I sit with you for a minute?””

Maya peeked through her fingers.

“Are you a police officer?””

“No. I'm a soldier.””

“Are soldiers allowed to find mommies?””

The question struck him harder than it should have.

“Sometimes,” he answered.

“What's your mommy's name?””

Maya looked at Noah.

Noah shook his head frantically.

Marcus noticed.

“It's okay,” he said.

“You haven't done anything wrong.””

“She said we had to wait,” Maya whispered.

“Who did?””

“Our mommy.””

Marcus glanced toward Gate 14. The woman was gone.

“Where did she say she was going?””

Maya rubbed her nose against her sleeve.

“She said she had to get on a plane. She said somebody would come get us.””

“Did she tell you who?””

“No.””

“Do you have another grown-up we can call? A grandma, an aunt, anybody?””

Maya shook her head.

Noah finally spoke.

“She took our blue suitcase.””

Marcus looked at the two backpacks.

“Was there anything important inside?””

“My pajamas,” Noah said.

“And my picture.””

“What picture?””

He held up the dinosaur.

“The picture of my mommy and daddy. Mommy said I couldn't keep it.””

Marcus exchanged a glance with Daniel, who had just reached them.

Daniel crouched beside the bench.

“Sir, airport security is on the way.””

Maya immediately stiffened.

“No! Please don't let them take us!””

“Hey,” Daniel said gently.

“Nobody's taking you anywhere without making sure you're safe.””

Maya's lower lip trembled.

“Vanessa said policemen would put us in a bad place if we told.””

Marcus went still.

“Vanessa?”” he repeated.

“Is that the woman's name?””

Maya nodded.

“She said she's our mommy.””

“Is she?””

For a moment, Maya looked as if she might cry again.

Then she leaned toward Marcus and whispered something that made his entire expression change.

“She told us our real mommy was dead.””

Noah squeezed his dinosaur.

“But she's not dead,” he whispered.

“I saw her.””

Marcus leaned closer.

“You saw your real mommy?””

Noah nodded.

“In the airport. She was wearing a blue dress. Vanessa told us not to wave at her.””

“When was this?””

“Before we came here.””

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“Call airport security. Tell them we have two abandoned children and a possible child abduction. Get the terminal cameras preserved immediately.””

Daniel was already dialing.

“Understood, sir.””

Marcus turned back to the children.

“What's your real last name?””

Maya hesitated.

“Vanessa said we had to forget it.””

“You don't have to forget anything for me.””

Maya studied his face for several seconds, then leaned close enough that only he could hear her.

She whispered her surname.

Marcus froze.

He asked her to repeat it.

When she did, his face lost its color.

Daniel noticed immediately.

“Sir?””

Marcus didn't answer.

He took a slow breath, then looked at the children again.

“Does your real mommy know you're here?””

Maya began to cry.

“She was looking for us.””

Noah's voice broke.

“She was shouting our names, but Vanessa pulled us away.””

Marcus felt a cold anger rise inside him.

He had heard that surname before. Not in a routine military briefing, but in a sealed security report involving a missing woman, a disputed identity, and a case that had been closed under circumstances that never sat right with him.

He looked at Daniel.

“Give dispatch the surname. Ask them to check the missing-person database and notify airport police.””

Daniel spoke into his phone, spelling the name carefully.

Then he stopped.

“Sir, they're asking for confirmation.””

“Confirm it.””

Daniel listened.

His eyebrows rose.

“What did they say?”” Marcus demanded.

Daniel lowered his phone.

“They've identified a woman matching the description. She's been at the airport for nearly an hour, reporting two missing children.””

Maya shot upright.

“That's our mommy!””

Noah dropped his dinosaur and grabbed Marcus's sleeve.

“Please find her!””

Marcus placed one hand gently on each child's shoulder.

“We will.””

Daniel's phone rang again.

He answered, listened for three seconds, and looked at Marcus with an expression that made the colonel's blood run cold.

“Sir, the woman searching for them is already inside this terminal.””

“Where?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Gate 14.””

Marcus turned toward the gate.

A woman in a blue dress stood beside the boarding counter, her hair disheveled, her face wet with tears.

She was staring directly at the two children.

And when Maya saw her, she screamed a single word.

“Mommy!””

The woman ran.

But before she could reach them, two airport officers stepped into her path.

One of them raised a hand.

“Ma'am, don't move. We need to verify your identity.””

The woman stopped so abruptly that she nearly fell.

“Those are my babies!”” she cried.

“Please, they're my children!””

Marcus rose slowly.

He had expected relief.

Instead, he saw something else in her face.

Terror.

May you like

She looked at the children, then at the officers, and whispered a sentence that changed everything.

“Please hurry. Vanessa told me she was taking them out of the country.””
