Chapter 2: The Woman in the Blue Dress

“Mommy!””

Maya broke away from the bench.

An airport officer caught her gently before she could run into the crowd.

“Easy, sweetheart. We have to make sure everything is okay.””

“That's my mommy!”” Maya screamed.

“That's her!””

The woman in the blue dress covered her mouth with both hands.

She looked as if someone had reached inside her chest and ripped out her heart.

“My name is Evelyn Carter,” she said, fighting to keep her voice steady.

“Those children are Maya and Noah Carter. I'm their mother. Please, you have to let me hold them.””

The older officer, Sergeant Collins, glanced at his partner.

“Ma'am, I understand you're upset. We have reports of a woman abandoning two children here.””

“Vanessa?”” Evelyn asked.

Collins nodded.

Evelyn's knees nearly buckled.

“She was supposed to be watching them for twenty minutes. I stepped away to speak with airport security about a problem with my boarding documents. When I came back, they were gone.””

“You reported them missing?””

“Yes! I reported them missing almost an hour ago!””

Her voice cracked.

“I've been running through this terminal calling their names. Nobody would tell me anything. Please, just let me see them.””

Marcus approached, keeping himself between the children and the growing crowd.

“Sergeant, I'm Colonel Marcus Hale. I witnessed the children being left alone. They identified Vanessa as the woman who abandoned them.””

Collins studied Marcus's identification.

“Did you see the woman leave?””

“Yes. She walked toward Gate 14 with a suitcase. She told the children to remain on the bench.””

Evelyn stared at him.

“You saw her?””

“Yes, ma'am.””

“Did you see which way she went?””

Marcus pointed toward the boarding corridor.

“Security is checking the cameras.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Thank God.””

Then she looked past the officers.

Maya was crying so hard that her shoulders shook. Noah stood beside her, clutching his dinosaur and watching his mother as though he were afraid she might disappear if he blinked.

Evelyn reached toward them.

“Baby, it's Mommy. I'm right here.””

Noah took one hesitant step forward.

Then he stopped.

“Are you really our mommy?””

Evelyn's face crumpled.

“Oh, sweetheart.””

She dropped to her knees.

“Look at me. Please look at me.””

Noah stared at her.

Evelyn touched the small silver necklace at her throat. It held a tiny heart-shaped pendant.

“Remember the night you were scared of the thunderstorm? You slept in my bed, and Maya put every stuffed animal in the house around you because she said they would protect you.””

Maya let out a sob.

“You said the dinosaur was the bravest.””

Evelyn laughed through her tears.

“Because he was guarding his little brother.””

Noah looked down at the green toy in his hands.

Then he ran.

“Mommy!””

Evelyn caught him against her chest.

Maya followed, wrapping both arms around her mother's neck.

For several seconds, the airport vanished around them.

Evelyn held her children as if she could physically protect them from everything that had happened.

“I've got you,” she whispered.

“I've got you both. I'm here.””

Maya buried her face against Evelyn's shoulder.

“Vanessa said you didn't want us.””

Evelyn went rigid.

“What?””

“She said you were tired of us,” Maya sobbed.

“She said you wanted to send us away.””

Evelyn pulled back enough to look at her daughter.

“No. Never. Not for one second.””

“But she said—”

“Vanessa lied to you.””

Her voice trembled, but she forced every word out clearly.

“I would search every country in the world for you. I would never leave you behind.””

Noah clutched her neck.

“Promise?””

Evelyn pressed her forehead to his.

“I promise.””

Marcus watched them quietly.

He had seen families reunited after deployments, disasters, and months of uncertainty. He knew what relief looked like.

This was relief mixed with a terror that hadn't yet found its target.

Because Evelyn kept looking over her shoulder.

Every few seconds, her eyes darted toward the boarding gates.

Finally, Marcus stepped closer.

“Mrs. Carter, we need to understand what happened. Who is Vanessa, and why was she taking your children?””

Evelyn's arms tightened around Maya and Noah.

“She's my younger sister.””

Collins exchanged a glance with his partner.

“Your sister abandoned your children?””

“She told me she wanted to help. She said I looked exhausted and needed someone I could trust.””

“When did she take charge of them?””

“This morning.””

Evelyn swallowed hard.

“She offered to take them to the airport café while I handled a problem with our tickets. She had copies of their travel documents. I thought she was taking them to the play area.””

Marcus frowned.

“Why would she have their documents?””

“Because she's my sister,” Evelyn replied, her voice breaking.

“Because I trusted her.””

The words hung between them.

A uniformed airport investigator approached with a tablet.

“Sergeant Collins, we have footage from Gate 14. The woman left the children at approximately 10:42 a.m. She proceeded toward the international departure area.””

“Did she board a flight?”” Collins asked.

“Not yet confirmed.””

The investigator turned the screen toward Marcus.

The footage showed Vanessa walking away from the bench, pulling her silver suitcase.

She never looked back.

Then the investigator swiped to another clip.

Vanessa appeared near a ticket counter, speaking to a man in a dark jacket. She handed him a small envelope.

The man glanced toward the terminal windows.

Then he handed her a boarding pass.

Evelyn stared at the screen.

“No,” she whispered.

Marcus turned toward her.

“Do you know that man?””

Evelyn nodded slowly.

“His name is Richard Cole. He's a lawyer.””

Collins leaned closer.

“Your lawyer?””

“No.””

Evelyn's fingers tightened around her son's shoulder.

“He represented my sister during a financial dispute with our father.””

Marcus watched the footage again.

Vanessa and Richard separated. Richard walked toward another gate while Vanessa continued toward the international departure area.

“What was the dispute about?”” Marcus asked.

Evelyn hesitated.

“My father's estate.””

Collins lowered the tablet.

“Mrs. Carter, did your sister have any legal authority over your children?””

“Absolutely not.””

“Any custody agreement? Guardianship documents?””

“No. Nothing.””

“Did she have access to their passports?””

Evelyn's face went pale.

“She had copies. The originals were with me.””

Marcus noticed something.

“Where are your passports now?””

Evelyn looked down at the children.

Then she reached into her handbag with trembling hands.

Two small passports lay inside.

She exhaled shakily.

“They're here.””

“Good,” Marcus said.

“Keep them with you.””

Evelyn stared at the documents, then at the children.

“Why would she do this?””

Nobody answered.

The investigator's radio crackled.

“Security to Gate 14. We may have located the suspect. Female matching description near international screening.””

Collins immediately touched his earpiece.

“Do not approach alone. Keep visual contact and notify airport police.””

Evelyn stood so quickly that Noah nearly lost his balance.

“I'm coming with you.””

“Ma'am, you need to stay with your children,” Collins said.

“She's my sister!””

“And she may be involved in a criminal offense. Let us handle it.””

Evelyn looked toward Marcus.

“Please. You have to stop her.””

Marcus nodded.

“I will do everything I can to make sure the authorities find her.””

Then Maya tugged at his sleeve.

“Colonel?””

He bent toward her.

“What is it, sweetheart?””

Maya looked at her mother, then at the security officers.

“Vanessa said if Mommy found us, the bad man would make her go away again.””

Marcus's expression hardened.

“What bad man?””

Maya pointed toward the tablet.

“The man with the black jacket.””

Evelyn stopped breathing.

Marcus looked back at the footage.

The investigator enlarged the image of Richard Cole.

A reflection in the glass behind him revealed something the camera had barely captured.

Richard was holding a photograph.

It showed Evelyn standing beside Maya and Noah.
