Chapter 13: The Promise Arthur Buried

Evelyn couldn't take her eyes off the photograph.

She was standing outside St. Mary's Medical Center, younger by several years, wearing a white coat over her blue dress. Beside her stood a woman Evelyn had never met—or so she had believed.

Sarah Mitchell.

The woman had dark hair, tired eyes, and one hand resting protectively over her stomach.

On the back, Arthur Carter had written a sentence that made Evelyn's hands shake.

I promised Sarah I would keep her daughter safe.

“Where did you find this?”” Evelyn asked.

Maya pointed toward the green dinosaur.

“It was in his pocket, Mommy.””

Noah hugged the toy against his chest.

“Grandpa said it was a secret.””

Evelyn knelt in front of him.

“When did Grandpa tell you that?””

Noah looked uncertain.

“When I was little.””

“You're still little, sweetheart.””

“I mean before. When I was smaller.””

Marcus crouched beside them.

“Noah, do you remember where you were when Grandpa gave you the dinosaur?””

Noah nodded.

“At Grandpa's house. The big house with the lake. He said the dinosaur was a brave dinosaur, and brave dinosaurs keep important things safe.””

Evelyn's heart ached.

Her father had apparently hidden pieces of the truth inside a child's toy, trusting a five-year-old to carry something no adult could safely reveal.

“Did Grandpa tell you anything else?”” Marcus asked.

Noah thought carefully.

“He said if someone asked me to go with them, I should ask Mommy first.””

Marcus exchanged a glance with Evelyn.

“And did you?””

Noah nodded.

“But Aunt Vanessa said Mommy didn't want me anymore.””

Evelyn pulled him into her arms.

“I have always wanted you. Both of you. Nothing will ever change that.””

Maya climbed into the embrace.

“We're staying together, right?””

“Always,” Evelyn whispered.

Marcus stood and turned to Daniel.

“Get the photograph documented. Contact the medical examiner's office and request the original records concerning Sarah Mitchell. I want a complete timeline of her admission, delivery, and death.””

Daniel nodded.

“And the caller?””

“Have the communications team trace the number. We don't act on anonymous claims without corroboration.””

Evelyn rose slowly.

“Colonel, the caller said Maya was Sarah's biological daughter.””

“I heard him.””

“And if he's right?””

“Then we'll establish it through verified records and proper testing.””

Evelyn stared at the photograph.

“What if Maya isn't mine?””

Marcus spoke carefully.

“Biological relationships and motherhood aren't always the same thing. Whatever the tests establish, Maya and Noah need stability, love, and protection. Nobody is going to make them choose a parent tonight.””

Evelyn nodded, though the fear remained.

She had spent five years loving her children without question. Now someone was trying to turn that love into evidence against her.

At midnight, Rachel asked to speak with Evelyn in the kitchen.

The officers remained within sight.

Rachel placed a small envelope on the table.

“I should have given you this earlier.””

Evelyn stared at it.

“What is it?””

“My mother's final letter.””

“Why didn't you give it to the police?””

“Because I was afraid of what it would reveal.””

Evelyn's expression hardened.

“Everyone has been afraid. Meanwhile, my children were left at an airport.””

“I know.””

“Do you?””

Rachel lowered her head.

“My mother made terrible choices. I spent years telling myself she had only changed paperwork, that she hadn't actually hurt anyone. But when I found the duplicate records, I realized I didn't know what she had done.””

“Why did you disappear six months ago?””

Rachel hesitated.

“Someone broke into my apartment. They took my laptop and left a photograph of my mother on the floor. On the back, someone had written, ‘Stop digging.’”

“Who?””

“I don't know. The next day, I received a call from a man who said Arthur Carter had died and that I should leave town.””

Evelyn opened the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

Rachel,

If you are reading this, I have failed to correct what I helped create.

There were two newborn girls at St. Mary's on the night Sarah Mitchell died. One was Sarah's daughter. The other was born to Evelyn Carter.

The hospital records were altered after an emergency transfer. I did not see the children exchanged, but I helped conceal the discrepancy because I believed I was protecting my employer and my family.

Your uncle Stephen knows more than he admits. Richard Cole arranged the legal documents. Arthur Carter paid to preserve the original records, but he did not tell the whole truth.

Find the original delivery ledger. It will establish which child belongs to which mother.

Do not trust anyone who claims the truth can be proved by a single report.

Mother.

Evelyn read the letter twice.

“Two newborn girls,” she whispered.

“Maya and another baby?””

Rachel nodded.

“That's what she believed.””

“Then where does Noah fit into this?””

“I don't know.””

Evelyn looked at her.

“You said your mother changed records for money. Was there a third baby?””

Rachel shook her head.

“Not according to the letter.””

“Then why did someone create a birth certificate naming Laura Bennett as Noah's mother?””

Rachel looked toward the hallway.

“Because someone needed to make Noah's identity uncertain.””

Evelyn felt a chill move through her.

“Who benefits from that?””

Before Rachel could answer, Marcus entered the kitchen.

“We have a development.””

He placed a printed photograph on the table.

It showed Arthur Carter entering the private entrance of a medical building four days before his supposed death.

Evelyn stared.

“That's the same man from the other photograph.””

“Yes,” Marcus said.

“Our investigators have confirmed the images came from different cameras. The dates appear genuine, but we still need to establish the man's identity.””

“Could my father still be alive?””

“It's possible. We don't have proof either way.””

Evelyn touched the edge of the photograph.

“If he's alive, he knows everything.””

Marcus's expression tightened.

“Which is why someone may be trying to reach him before we do.””

His phone rang.

Daniel was calling from the station.

“Sir, we found the original delivery ledger.””

Marcus straightened.

“Where?””

“In an archive room beneath Carter Construction. It was inside a sealed box marked for destruction.””

“Who found it?””

“The estate administrator. But there's a problem.””

“What problem?””

“The final two pages have been cut out.””

Marcus closed his eyes briefly.

“Secure what's left. Photograph every page and send copies to the forensic team.””

Daniel's voice lowered.

“There's something else. The archive access log shows someone entered the room tonight.””

“Who?””

Daniel paused.

“The keycard was registered to Evelyn Carter.””

Evelyn stared at Marcus.

“I've never been in that archive.””

Marcus held her gaze.

“I believe you. But someone wants the evidence to point toward you.””

“Why?””

“Because if they can make you look responsible for the altered records, they can undermine everything you say about your children.””

A sound came from the hallway.

One of the officers hurried into the kitchen.

“Colonel, we have a situation.””

Marcus turned.

“What is it?””

“The children are safe. But Rachel is missing.””

Evelyn spun toward the living room.

Rachel's chair was empty.

The front door remained locked. The officers had been watching the windows.

Then Marcus noticed the open back door.

A cold wind moved the curtains.

On the kitchen table, beneath Rachel's untouched cup, lay a note.

Three words had been written in black ink.

*ASK ABOUT MAYA.*

Evelyn snatched it up.

“Find her!””

Marcus was already moving.

But before he reached the door, his phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

A photograph appeared on the screen.

Rachel was sitting in the passenger seat of a car, her face pale and frightened. Beside her was an older man whose features were unmistakable.

Arthur Carter.

May you like

Beneath the photograph was a message.

*Bring the original ledger to the boathouse before sunrise. Come alone, Evelyn. Or you'll lose both children.*
