Chapter 5: Two Birth Certificates

The hospital had closed its maternity ward three years earlier.

But the records were still there.

Marcus stood outside the airport security office while Daniel spoke with a detective assigned to the case. Evelyn sat in the family room with her children, refusing to let them out of her sight.

Nobody had accused her of wrongdoing.

Nobody had said she would lose custody.

Still, every time an officer entered the room, she instinctively pulled Maya and Noah closer.

Marcus understood why.

For the first time, the possibility existed that someone might use a medical record to challenge the children's identities.

He wasn't going to let that possibility become a verdict.

“Sir,” Daniel said, ending his call, “the detective has contacted St. Mary's records department. The hospital will cooperate, but archived maternity files require formal authorization.””

“How long?””

“Potentially several hours.””

Marcus checked his watch.

“Then we start with what we have.””

He returned to the family room.

Evelyn was examining the newborn photograph under the fluorescent lights.

“Look at their bracelets,” she said as he entered.

Marcus pulled up a chair.

“What about them?””

“The baby on the left has a yellow bracelet. The baby on the right has a blue one.””

“Is that unusual?””

“Not necessarily. But Maya had a yellow bracelet when she was born. Noah had blue.””

She traced the edge of the photograph.

“That's why I kept it. My father visited us in the hospital and took pictures of everything. He was so proud.””

Marcus studied the image.

Two newborns lay in separate bassinets. Their faces were too small to distinguish clearly, but their hospital bracelets were visible.

“Do you know which baby is which in the photograph?””

Evelyn pointed.

“Maya was on the left. Noah was on the right.””

“How certain are you?””

“Completely.””

“Then why would your father write that one of them wasn't yours?””

Evelyn shook her head.

“I don't know. Maybe he was trying to tell me something else.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“Did you ever have a reason to doubt the hospital's records?””

“No.””

“Did your sister have access to those records?””

“She knew which hospital I used. But she couldn't access my medical information without authorization.””

“Did she ever claim one of the children wasn't yours?””

“Not until today.””

Evelyn paused.

“Actually, there was one time.””

Marcus waited.

“When the twins were about two, Vanessa made a joke that Noah didn't look anything like me. I told her he looked like our father.””

“What did she say?””

Evelyn's voice dropped.

“She said, 'Maybe he looks like someone else.''”

Marcus's expression hardened.

“Did you ask what she meant?””

“I laughed. I thought she was being cruel.””

Evelyn pressed her fingers to her forehead.

“I should have asked.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Cruel remarks aren't proof of anything. Neither is a photograph with a sentence written on the back.””

“But what if there's something wrong with their birth records?””

“Then we'll investigate it properly. Until we have verified evidence, nobody gets to turn an allegation into a fact.””

Maya climbed down from her chair.

“Mommy?””

Evelyn immediately knelt.

“Yes, sweetheart?””

“Are we going to another house?””

“No, baby. We're staying together.””

“Even if Vanessa says we're not your babies?””

Evelyn's eyes filled.

She pulled Maya into a hug.

“Especially then.””

Noah approached, holding the dinosaur by its tail.

“Can we go home?””

Evelyn looked at Marcus.

He answered gently.

“The police need to make sure it's safe before you leave the airport. But we're going to work on that.””

Noah considered this.

“Can we get pancakes when we go home?””

Evelyn let out a broken laugh.

“Yes. Pancakes with chocolate chips.””

“Lots?””

“As many as you can eat.””

“That's too many,” Maya said, wiping her nose.

“Not for me,” Noah replied.

For a moment, the room felt almost normal.

Then Daniel returned.

“Sir, Vanessa has agreed to speak with investigators.””

Marcus stood.

“Did she ask for a lawyer?””

“Yes. Richard Cole has arrived and is representing her.””

“Convenient.””

Daniel handed him a printed statement.

“There's another problem. Vanessa says the photograph and the note came from your client's father. She claims Evelyn knew about the disputed parentage before the funeral.””

Evelyn heard him.

“That's a lie!””

Marcus turned.

“Stay here with the children. I'll find out what she's claiming.””

Evelyn grabbed his sleeve.

“Colonel, please don't let them believe her.””

“I won't accept either story without evidence.””

He gently freed his sleeve.

“But I need you to tell me everything you remember about the day your children were born.””

Vanessa sat in a private interview room with her lawyer beside her.

Her beige coat lay folded across the table. Her hair was neatly arranged, and her hands rested calmly in her lap.

She didn't look like someone who had abandoned two frightened children at an airport.

She looked like someone attending a business meeting.

Marcus entered with Detective Collins and sat opposite her.

“Ms. Carter,” Collins began, “you understand that we're investigating the abandonment of two children and the circumstances surrounding their attempted international travel?””

Vanessa nodded.

“I do.””

“Why did you leave Maya and Noah alone at Gate 14?””

“I didn't abandon them. I was told someone would collect them.””

“Who?””

Vanessa looked at Richard.

He leaned forward.

“My client will answer questions relating to the family dispute, but she will not speculate about criminal allegations.””

Collins slid a printed photograph across the table.

“Is this you leaving the children?””

Vanessa glanced at it.

“Yes.””

“Did you tell them to remain there?””

“Yes.””

“Did you tell them their real mother didn't want them?””

Vanessa's expression changed.

“No.””

Marcus watched her carefully.

“Maya and Noah told us you said exactly that.””

“They're five. They misunderstand things.””

“You told them their mother was dead?””

Vanessa pressed her lips together.

“I told them their mother wasn't who they thought she was.””

“That's not what I asked.””

Richard intervened.

“My client will not answer further questions without clarification of the allegations.””

Collins leaned back.

“Then let's clarify them. We found travel arrangements for the children, documents disputing their parentage, and a note stating that removing them would give you leverage over Evelyn.””

Vanessa's calm expression cracked.

“Those documents were never supposed to be used that way.””

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

“What were they supposed to be used for?””

Vanessa looked at Richard.

He said nothing.

Finally, she spoke.

“My father left Evelyn everything. The company, the properties, the voting shares. I was supposed to receive a fair inheritance, but she convinced him I was irresponsible.””

“Did your father leave you a smaller inheritance than you expected?”” Collins asked.

“Yes.””

“And your response was to take your sister's children out of the country?””

“I was trying to protect them.””

“From what?””

Vanessa's hands tightened.

“From Evelyn.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“Explain.””

Vanessa looked directly at him.

“Evelyn knows that one of those children isn't biologically hers.””

The room fell silent.

Collins opened a folder.

“Do you have verified medical records supporting that claim?””

“Yes.””

“Where are they?””

“Richard has them.””

Richard's jaw tightened.

“I have a document that may be relevant. I have not independently verified its authenticity.””

Vanessa turned toward him.

“You told me it was genuine.””

“I told you it appeared genuine.””

“You said it proved everything!””

Richard raised his voice.

“Lower your voice.””

Vanessa recoiled.

Marcus watched the exchange.

Their confidence was beginning to fracture.

“Mr. Cole,” Collins said, “where did you obtain the document?””

“From a client who asked me to examine a potential inheritance dispute.””

“Which client?””

Richard hesitated.

“Arthur Carter.””

Marcus felt his pulse quicken.

“Arthur Carter is dead.””

Richard looked at him.

“That is what I was told.””

“You personally received documents from him?””

Richard glanced at Vanessa.

“I received an envelope through a courier. It contained the photograph and a handwritten statement.””

“Did you meet the courier?””

“No.””

“Did you verify the sender's identity?””

Richard said nothing.

Collins closed the folder.

“Then at this stage, you cannot establish that the document came from Arthur Carter at all.””

Richard adjusted his tie.

“I can establish that my client believed it was authentic.””

Marcus turned back to Vanessa.

“Did you see your father after the date of his reported death?””

Her expression went blank.

“No.””

“Did anyone tell you he was alive?””

“No.””

“Then why did you tell the children a man would be angry if they made a scene?””

Vanessa looked down.

For the first time, she appeared frightened.

“I didn't know they would be left alone for so long.””

Marcus's voice hardened.

“You left them at an airport without a responsible adult. You gave them instructions to hide their identities. You arranged for them to travel with someone else. You don't get to minimize that.””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“I didn't want them hurt.””

“Then tell us the truth.””

She stared at the tabletop.

Finally, she whispered, “The man who was supposed to collect them was my father's personal driver.””

Marcus exchanged a glance with Collins.

“Name?””

“Peter Lawson.””

“Where is he now?””

“I don't know.””

“Was he supposed to take them abroad?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Yes.””

“Who instructed him?””

Vanessa looked at Richard.

Richard stood abruptly.

“This interview is over.””

Collins raised a hand.

“Sit down, Mr. Cole.””

“My client has answered enough.””

Vanessa grabbed his wrist.

“Richard, tell them.””

He stared at her.

“Not another word.””

Marcus saw it then.

The lawyer wasn't merely protecting his client.

He was afraid of what she might reveal.

Before the officers could continue, a detective appeared in the doorway and handed Collins a message.

Collins read it once.

Then he looked at Marcus.

“Sir, St. Mary's has located the original maternity records.””

Marcus stood.

“What's in them?””

Collins lowered his voice.

“There are two birth certificates on file for Noah Carter. Both carry the same date of birth, but they list different biological mothers.””

May you like

Vanessa closed her eyes.

And for the first time, she smiled.
