Chapter 9: The Secret That Could Destroy Them

Marcus had seen enough threats to know the difference between intimidation and a credible danger.

This one was credible.

The message had arrived through a number connected to Arthur Carter's former business account. Richard Cole had risked entering a secured property. Someone had asked specifically about the key.

And the threat named a five-year-old child.

Marcus immediately handed the phone to the lead officer.

“Secure this as evidence. Notify the detective handling the case and request emergency protection for both children.””

The officer nodded and hurried away.

Evelyn stood frozen beside the police vehicle.

“Kill Noah?””

Her voice was barely audible.

Marcus turned toward her.

“Listen to me. Both children will remain under protection. Nobody is going to take them anywhere without law enforcement knowing.””

“But why him?””

“I don't know yet.””

Evelyn looked at Noah.

He was standing beside Maya, trying to straighten the dinosaur's bent tail.

“Mommy, is my toy broken?””

Evelyn dropped to her knees and pulled him into her arms.

“No, sweetheart. It's not broken.””

“Then why are you crying?””

She kissed his forehead.

“Because I love you so much.””

Noah hugged her back.

“I love you, too.””

Marcus looked away, giving them a moment.

Then Daniel approached.

“Sir, the officers searching the property found a second entrance to the hidden room. It opens into the basement.””

“Anything inside?””

“Footprints. Recent ones.””

“How recent?””

“The dust was disturbed, and the basement door was left unlocked. Someone has been using the house.””

Marcus looked toward the lake.

Arthur Carter's property had supposedly been empty for six months.

But someone had been coming and going.

Someone knew about the hidden room.

Someone knew about the blue box.

“Get a team to search the entire property,” Marcus ordered.

“Check the outbuildings, the garage, and every vehicle. Nobody works alone.””

Daniel nodded.

“And the box?””

Marcus glanced at the house.

“We open it under police supervision.””

The search team returned twenty minutes later with an evidence technician.

The blue box was brought into the study and placed on a cleared desk. Photographs were taken of the locks, the hinges, and the surrounding area.

Evelyn sat beside Maya and Noah in the living room, refusing to let them out of her sight.

Marcus stood beside the technician.

“Can you open it without damaging the contents?””

“I can try. The second lock is mechanical.””

The technician examined the combination dial.

“Four digits.””

Marcus looked at the notebook.

“Try the date of the final instructions.””

The technician entered 0416.

The lock clicked.

Evelyn stood immediately.

“That was the night before my father died.””

Marcus nodded.

The technician opened the lid.

Inside were three folders, a small digital recorder, and a sealed envelope bearing Evelyn's name.

Marcus photographed the contents before allowing the technician to remove anything.

The first folder contained financial documents relating to Carter Construction. The second contained copies of legal correspondence between Arthur Carter and Richard Cole.

The third folder was labeled:

*MAYA AND NOAH — ORIGINAL RECORDS.*

Evelyn stepped forward.

“That's about my children.””

Marcus nodded.

The technician opened the folder.

Inside were hospital records, laboratory reports, and a notarized statement signed by Arthur Carter.

The first page stated that the original hospital records had been altered without Evelyn's knowledge.

The second page contained a list of names.

Dr. Stephen Bennett.

Richard Cole.

Vanessa Carter.

And a fourth name.

Daniel Carter.

Evelyn stared at it.

“No.””

Marcus turned toward her.

“Who is Daniel Carter?””

“My husband.””

Her voice shook.

“He died two years ago.””

Marcus looked back at the document.

The statement alleged that Daniel had participated in a private arrangement involving the hospital records.

Evelyn shook her head.

“That's impossible. Daniel loved those children. He would never have done anything to hurt them.””

Marcus didn't dismiss her.

“Then we need to establish whether the signature is authentic.””

Evelyn's hands trembled.

“Why would my father accuse him?””

Marcus continued reading.

The statement claimed that one of the children had been born using an embryo created through a private fertility arrangement.

The document didn't identify which child.

Instead, it referred to them as Child A and Child B.

A laboratory report was attached, but its source was unclear. It carried no verified chain of custody and appeared to have been copied from an incomplete medical file.

Marcus frowned.

“This is not sufficient to establish biological parentage.””

“But someone has been using it to threaten my children,” Evelyn said.

“Yes.””

She gripped the edge of the desk.

“Then we find the truth. Whatever it is.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You understand that the investigation may uncover information you don't expect.””

Evelyn's eyes filled, but she didn't look away.

“I've spent all day hearing that my sister thinks I'm not their mother, that my father may be alive, and that someone wants to kill my son.””

She took a shaky breath.

“I don't have anything left to protect except the truth.””

The technician removed the sealed envelope.

“Colonel, this appears to be addressed directly to Mrs. Carter.””

Marcus examined the seal.

It had not been broken.

He handed it to Evelyn.

She opened it with trembling fingers.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

My dear Evelyn,

If you are reading this, the arrangement I made to protect you and the children has failed.

I have spent years trying to correct a mistake that should never have happened. I trusted people who cared more about money, reputation, and control than they did about two innocent children.

I cannot explain everything in a letter. But I need you to understand one thing.

Noah is the reason they will come after this family.

Evelyn stopped reading.

Noah was sitting on the floor, helping Maya put the dinosaur into a paper-cup castle.

She pressed the letter against her chest.

“Why Noah?””

Marcus continued reading the next paragraph aloud.

If the children are ever separated, the person who takes Noah will use him to claim what does not belong to them.

Do not let Vanessa near him. Do not trust Dr. Bennett. And do not believe that Daniel's death was an accident until the evidence has been independently examined.

Evelyn made a sound of disbelief.

“My husband died in a car accident.””

Marcus lowered the letter.

“Was there an investigation?””

“Yes. The police said he lost control of the vehicle on a wet road.””

“Were you told about any mechanical problems?””

“No.””

“Did your father question the findings?””

Evelyn shook her head slowly.

“He told me to be careful after Daniel died. He said the accident didn't make sense, but he never explained why.””

Marcus looked at the letter again.

Arthur Carter had left a direct warning about Daniel's death, the disputed hospital records, and Noah.

This wasn't merely an inheritance dispute anymore.

It might be a case involving falsified medical records, coercion, and a death that had never been properly explained.

The technician removed the digital recorder from the box.

“There's a file saved on this device.””

Marcus nodded.

“Play it through the evidence system.””

The technician connected it to a laptop.

Static crackled through the small speaker.

Then a man's voice filled the room.

Arthur Carter.

“If you're hearing this, then someone has opened the blue box.””

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Her father's voice sounded older than she remembered, but unmistakable.

“I don't know whether Evelyn is safe. I don't know whether Vanessa has gone too far. But I know the truth about the children must come out before someone uses it to destroy them.””

A pause followed.

Then Arthur continued.

“Daniel, if you're listening, you know what you did. You know why the records were changed. You know which child belongs to Laura Bennett.””

Evelyn staggered backward.

Marcus caught her arm.

The recording continued.

“You have one chance to tell the truth. If you don't, the children will pay for your silence.””

A sharp noise sounded in the background.

Arthur's voice became urgent.

“Someone is here. If anything happens to me, tell Evelyn that Noah is not—”

The recording stopped.

The technician checked the device.

“That's the end of the file.””

Evelyn stood motionless.

Her husband had supposedly been dead for two years.

Her father had apparently known something about the circumstances surrounding his death.

And the recording suggested that Noah's parentage was connected to Laura Bennett.

Marcus turned toward Daniel.

“Find Dr. Bennett. I want him brought back for questioning immediately.””

Daniel was already reaching for his phone.

Then a police officer appeared in the doorway.

“Colonel, we have an update from airport security.””

Marcus turned.

“What is it?””

“The woman who identified herself as Vanessa Carter has disappeared from the interview area.””

Marcus's expression hardened.

“How?””

“Her lawyer requested a private consultation. During the transfer, she entered a service corridor and left through an emergency exit.””

“Was Richard Cole with her?””

“No, sir. He's still in custody.””

Marcus looked toward the living room.

Evelyn was holding Noah and Maya tightly against her chest.

He had promised that the children would be safe.

Now the woman who had abandoned them had escaped, the doctor connected to the falsified records was missing, and the evidence suggested that Noah's identity was at the center of a much larger crime.

Marcus's phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

A photograph appeared on the screen.

Vanessa stood beside a white car in an underground parking garage.

She was holding a piece of paper against the windshield.
