Chapter 10: The Woman Who Claimed Noah

“Absolutely not.””

Evelyn's voice cut through the living room as Marcus showed her Vanessa's photograph.

“No one is taking Noah anywhere. Not for a test, not for a conversation, and certainly not because my sister demands it.””

Marcus lowered his phone.

“That's exactly what we're going to prevent.””

“Then find her!””

“We're tracking the photograph and the message. Airport police are coordinating with local investigators.””

Evelyn paced between the sofa and the fireplace, her hands trembling.

Vanessa had abandoned two five-year-olds at an airport. She had lied to them about their mother. She had helped create a false trail involving their grandfather and had apparently arranged for Noah to be taken away.

Now she wanted to exchange information about his identity for access to him.

Evelyn stopped in front of Marcus.

“What if the woman in those records really is his biological mother?””

Marcus met her eyes.

“Then we'll establish that through legitimate, independently verified evidence. No one gets to take a child because they claim a document proves something.””

“But what if Noah isn't biologically mine?””

“Mrs. Carter, you've raised him since birth. You are his mother in every way that matters to a five-year-old. Whatever the records eventually establish, nobody should use that uncertainty to frighten or manipulate him.””

Evelyn looked toward the living room.

Maya and Noah were building a tower with paper cups. Noah had placed his dinosaur on top as a guard.

“Mommy,” Maya called, “the castle needs a queen!””

Evelyn forced a smile.

“Then I suppose you'll have to be the queen.””

“What about Noah?””

“He can be the king.””

Noah shook his head.

“I want to be the dinosaur's assistant.””

Maya giggled.

For a few seconds, Evelyn could almost pretend the world had returned to normal.

Then Marcus's phone rang.

“Colonel Hale,” he answered.

A detective spoke rapidly on the other end.

They had identified the underground garage in Vanessa's photograph. It belonged to a private medical building in the city.

More importantly, a security camera had captured Vanessa entering the building less than fifteen minutes earlier.

Marcus straightened.

“Is the building occupied?””

“Yes. Several medical offices and a private laboratory.””

“Get officers there. Do not approach her alone.””

He ended the call and looked at Daniel.

“We're moving.””

Evelyn stood immediately.

“I'm coming.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No. You stay here with the children and the officers.””

“She's my sister!””

“And she has already demonstrated that she'll use your children to get what she wants.””

Evelyn's face hardened.

“Then she should have thought about that before she left them at Gate 14.””

Marcus studied her for a moment.

He saw the frightened mother who had begged strangers to let her hold her children. But he also saw someone who had finally stopped asking permission to protect them.

“Stay with the officers,” he said.

“If Vanessa contacts you, don't respond. Let the investigators handle it.””

Evelyn nodded reluctantly.

Marcus left with Daniel.

Neither man noticed Maya watching them from behind the sofa.

Nor did they notice her quietly slip the green dinosaur into Noah's backpack.

The private medical building had three floors, a reception desk, and a basement laboratory used for genetic testing.

Marcus arrived to find two patrol cars parked outside.

A security guard met him at the entrance.

“The woman in the photograph entered through the east door,” he said.

“She asked for Dr. Bennett.””

“Did she leave?””

“Not that I've seen.””

Marcus followed the officers inside.

The reception area smelled of disinfectant and coffee. A television played silently above a row of plastic chairs.

A receptionist looked up.

“Can I help you?””

“Colonel Marcus Hale. We're looking for Vanessa Carter and Dr. Stephen Bennett.””

The receptionist's fingers froze over her keyboard.

Marcus noticed.

“Have they been here today?””

“I can't discuss patient information.””

“We're investigating a possible child abduction. If you know where they are, you need to tell the officers.””

The receptionist looked toward a closed door at the end of the hallway.

Then she whispered, “Basement.””

Marcus signaled to the officers.

They moved down the stairs.

At the bottom, a corridor led to several examination rooms. One door stood open.

Inside, Dr. Bennett was packing papers into a brown leather bag.

Vanessa stood beside him.

When she saw Marcus, she dropped a folder.

“You have no right to be here!””

Marcus remained in the doorway.

“Step away from the documents.””

Bennett immediately raised both hands.

“I can explain.””

“Then start with why you were preparing to leave.””

Vanessa pointed at him.

“He's the one who changed the records!””

Bennett stared at her.

“You told me Arthur was alive. You said he had authorized everything.””

“He did!””

“You never showed me proof.””

Marcus stepped farther into the room.

“Both of you will stop talking over each other. Dr. Bennett, put the bag on the table.””

Bennett complied.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“You think you've solved something, Colonel? You haven't. Evelyn has spent five years pretending that Noah belongs to her.””

Marcus's expression hardened.

“That's enough.””

“No, it isn't! Everyone keeps protecting her. My father protected her.

The hospital protected her. And now you're doing the same thing.””

“Why did you abandon two children at an airport?””

Vanessa's face tightened.

“I was supposed to meet someone.””

“Who?””

“Peter Lawson.””

“He told us your father arranged the pickup.””

Vanessa went silent.

Marcus watched her carefully.

“Did Arthur Carter tell you to take the children?””

She glanced at Bennett.

Then she looked away.

“No.””

“Did Richard Cole?””

“I don't know what Richard told you.””

“Did you know Noah might be taken abroad?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“I knew he would be safer somewhere else.””

“Safer from whom?””

She finally looked at Marcus.

“From Evelyn.””

The colonel shook his head.

“You keep repeating that accusation, but you haven't provided a single verified piece of evidence that she harmed either child.””

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

“Because the evidence was hidden!””

Bennett suddenly spoke.

“Vanessa, stop.””

She spun toward him.

“You promised me!””

“I promised to examine the records. I never promised to help you steal a child.””

Marcus moved toward the table.

“Dr. Bennett, explain the second birth certificate.””

Bennett looked at the floor.

“I altered the entry.””

Vanessa's face went pale.

“What?””

“I changed Noah's record after receiving a payment.””

“From whom?”” Marcus demanded.

Bennett hesitated.

“Richard Cole.””

“Why?””

“He told me the change was necessary to protect a child from a custody dispute. He supplied the documents and claimed the biological mother had already consented.””

“Did she?””

“No.””

“Did you verify the genetic report?””

Bennett shook his head.

“I didn't conduct the test. I received a report from an outside laboratory.””

“Which laboratory?””

“Northbridge Genetics.””

Marcus wrote down the name.

“Was the report authentic?””

“I don't know.””

Vanessa took a step toward him.

“You told me the test proved Noah was Laura's son!””

“I told you the report claimed that!””

“You said—”

Marcus raised his voice.

“Enough!””

Both fell silent.

He turned to Bennett.

“Where is Laura Bennett now?””

The doctor looked at Vanessa.

“She was supposed to meet us here.””

“When?””

“This afternoon.””

“Did she arrive?””

“No.””

Marcus glanced at the clock.

“Then we need to find her before anyone else does.””

Vanessa suddenly laughed.

It was a short, bitter sound.

“You won't find her.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Why?””

“Because Laura Bennett died three years ago.””

The room went silent.

Bennett closed his eyes.

Vanessa continued, her voice shaking.

“She died before Noah's fifth birthday. And she left a daughter.””

Marcus felt the case shift again.

“What's her daughter's name?””

Vanessa looked directly at him.

“Rachel.””

“Rachel what?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she said, “Rachel Bennett.””

Marcus's phone vibrated.

A message from Daniel appeared on the screen.

*Sir, we located Laura Bennett's death certificate. But there's a problem. Her daughter Rachel was reported missing six months ago—the same week Arthur Carter supposedly died.*

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

For the first time, she seemed afraid of what would happen next.

“Where is Rachel Bennett?”” he demanded.

Vanessa's lips trembled.

“I don't know.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Then tell me why her name is connected to Noah.””

May you like

Vanessa stared at him for several seconds.

Finally, she whispered, “Because Rachel is the only person alive who knows which baby Evelyn actually brought home from the hospital.””
