Chapter 1: The Secret Under the Silver Hair

“Congratulations — you finally have a hairstyle that suits your age. ♥”

Those were the words that destroyed the perfect wedding day I had spent thirty years dreaming about.

I was standing beneath the golden curtains of the ballroom, surrounded by white roses, crystal chandeliers, and hundreds of smiling faces, when I reached up and removed the wig I had worn for years.

The room went silent.

Not the peaceful kind of silence you feel before a beautiful moment.

The kind of silence that happens when everyone realizes something is terribly wrong.

My champagne-colored gown shimmered under the ballroom lights as I placed my gray wig on the podium. My pearl necklace rested against my chest, my hands trembled slightly, but I refused to let anyone see fear on my face.

I had one purpose.

The truth had to come out before my son married the wrong person.

“Marcus,” I called.

My son, standing near the front row in his black tuxedo, immediately pushed himself out of his chair.

“Mom?”” Marcus said, his voice cracking.

“What happened?””

His eyes moved from my shaved head to the wig sitting on the podium.

Then he looked at his bride.

Vanessa.

She had been smiling just seconds before. Her white strapless gown sparkled as she stood beside the wedding aisle, her veil perfectly arranged, her hand resting on her bouquet.

But the smile was gone.

I watched her face carefully.

For a moment, she looked confused.

Then terrified.

“Mom, what are you doing?”” Marcus asked, walking toward me.

“Why would you do this right now?””

I took a slow breath.

Because I loved my son.

Because I raised him after his father walked away.

Because I had worked double shifts, skipped vacations, and emptied my savings account so he could become the man standing in front of me.

And because someone had tried to humiliate me before the biggest day of his life.

“I woke up like this hours before your wedding,” I said.

A wave of whispers moved through the guests.

Vanessa stepped forward, her eyes narrowing.

“Gloria,” she said softly, forcing calm into her voice.

“I don’t know what you mean.””

That sentence hurt more than I expected.

Not because she denied it.

Because she said it so quickly.

Marcus looked between us.

“Wait,” he said.

“What is happening?””

I reached behind the podium and pulled out the handwritten card.

The paper shook slightly in my fingers.

“This was left on my bathroom mirror this morning.””

Marcus took a step closer.

“What does it say?””

I held it up.

The guests closest to the stage leaned forward.

The handwriting was clear.

“Congratulations — you finally have a hairstyle that suits your age. ♥”

Marcus stared at the words.

His face changed.

The confusion disappeared.

“What kind of sick joke is this?”” he whispered.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“That’s ridiculous,” she said.

“Why would anyone do something like that?””

I looked directly at her.

“That’s exactly what I want to know.””

Marcus turned toward his bride.

“Vanessa, did you see this card before?””

Her eyes widened.

“No.””

The answer came too quickly again.

A photographer near the aisle lowered his camera.

Guests who had been laughing moments earlier now watched like they were witnessing a courtroom.

Marcus rubbed his forehead.

“My mother’s hair was shaved before our wedding, and someone left a note insulting her. We need to figure this out.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I cannot believe you’re looking at me like I did something.””

I looked down at my hands.

I wanted to believe her.

I wanted to believe the woman my son loved was innocent.

But then I remembered something else.

Something that happened before I walked into that ballroom.

Something I had not told anyone.

I reached into my clutch.

The glittering purse caught the light as I pulled out a small silver key.

Marcus frowned.

“What is that?””

I looked at him.

“The wedding fund key.””

His expression changed.

Everyone knew about the safe.

The money inside was not just for a wedding.

It was the beginning of Marcus and Vanessa’s future.

A home.

A business.

A life they wanted together.

“I checked the wedding fund after I found my hair,” I said.

The ballroom became completely still.

Marcus swallowed.

“Mom…”

I looked toward the back of the room where the private safe was kept in a locked preparation area.

“I found something missing.””

Vanessa’s fingers tightened around her bouquet.

Marcus noticed.

I saw him notice.

And that was the first moment my son looked at his bride like he was seeing a stranger.

But before I could say what was gone, the wedding coordinator suddenly rushed toward the ballroom entrance, holding a piece of paper.

Her face was pale.

“Mrs. Gloria,” she whispered.

I turned.

“What is it?””

She looked at Marcus.

Then Vanessa.

Then slowly handed me the paper.

“There’s another message.””

I unfolded it.

And the moment I saw the name written at the bottom, my heart stopped.

May you like

Because the person who wrote it wasn’t hiding anymore.

They wanted me to know exactly who they were.
