Chapter 2: The Code Only Two People Knew

The second note was smaller than the first.

But somehow, it felt heavier.

I stared at the handwriting while the entire ballroom waited.

Marcus came closer.

“Mom, what does it say?””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked back at me.

For a second, neither of us spoke.

Then I folded the paper.

“Not here.””

Marcus’s eyebrows pulled together.

“What do you mean, not here? You just stopped your own son’s wedding.””

“I stopped nothing,” I said.

“Someone else did that when they touched me without my permission.””

The words came out colder than I expected.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“You’re making everyone think I’m guilty.””

I looked at her.

“Are you?””

Her mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Marcus immediately noticed.

“Vanessa?””

She looked at him.

“Of course not.””

But the confidence from earlier was gone.

I had known Vanessa for three years.

I knew her laugh.

I knew the way she touched Marcus’s arm when she wanted something.

I knew the way she smiled when people complimented her.

And I knew when she was afraid.

A mother knows.

“Marcus,” I said quietly, “ask her one question.””

He looked at me.

“What?””

“Ask her how she knew the safe code.””

The color disappeared from Vanessa’s face.

Marcus froze.

“What?””

I opened my clutch again and held up the small key.

“Your father left me that money before he passed. I kept it separate from everything else. The safe code was something only you and I knew.””

Marcus looked confused.

“No. Vanessa knew.””

The room went silent.

I stared at him.

“You told her?””

He hesitated.

“I thought she was going to be my wife.””

Those words hurt.

Not because he trusted her.

Because I understood why.

Love makes people believe things they would question from anyone else.

I nodded slowly.

“I understand.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“This is unbelievable. You’re accusing me because I know a number?””

“No,” I said.

“I’m asking why someone who knew the code would also know where I kept the spare key.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“Wait.””

His voice was quieter now.

“What happened to the money?””

I watched Vanessa’s expression.

“I don’t know.””

Marcus looked toward me.

“Mom?””

“I checked the safe.””

“And?””

I swallowed.

“The envelope was gone.””

A gasp moved through the crowd.

The wedding guests started whispering again.

Marcus ran his hand through his hair.

“No. No, that doesn’t make sense.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You think I stole money from our own wedding?””

Nobody answered.

Because the question itself was enough.

I walked away from the podium and toward the private room where the safe was kept.

Marcus followed.

Vanessa followed him.

The ballroom felt different now.

Minutes earlier, it had been filled with music and celebration.

Now every step echoed.

Inside the small preparation room, the steel safe sat against the wall.

The door was open.

Marcus stared.

“Who opened it?””

I touched the handle.

“The same person who did this to me.””

He looked at my shaved head.

His jaw tightened.

“Mom, why didn’t you tell me this happened before the ceremony?””

I laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because I had been trying to protect him.

“I didn’t want your wedding morning to become about me.””

Marcus looked down.

For a moment, he looked like the little boy who used to hold my hand crossing the street.

Then he turned toward Vanessa.

“Did you come into this room today?””

She shook her head immediately.

“No.””

“Did you know where the safe was?””

“No.””

“Did you know the code?””

Her silence lasted half a second too long.

That was all it took.

Marcus noticed.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at him.

“I… I knew the code because you told me.””

“And the safe?””

“I saw it once.””

“Then why did you say you didn’t know anything?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was scared.””

“Scared of what?””

Vanessa looked at me.

And I saw something I never expected.

Not guilt.

Not anger.

Regret.

“I was scared because I thought if I told the truth, you’d hate me.””

Marcus stepped back.

“What truth?””

Vanessa wiped her tears.

Before she could answer, someone outside the room shouted.

“Mrs. Gloria!””

We all turned.

The wedding coordinator stood in the doorway holding a phone.

“There’s security footage from this morning.””

Marcus walked forward.

“Show me.””

The coordinator looked nervous.

“I think you need to see who entered the room before your mother found the safe.””

She pressed play.

The video screen flickered.

A figure appeared walking through the hallway.

A person wearing a familiar wedding outfit.

Marcus leaned closer.

May you like

Then his face went completely still.

Because the person on the screen was someone none of us expected.
