Chapter 11: The Truth Behind the Wedding Fund

Marcus disappeared into the ballroom.

The music was still playing softly.

The guests were still waiting.

They had no idea the groom had just walked away from his entire family.

I stood in the doorway watching him.

A little boy who once held my hand.

A grown man who no longer knew if he could trust it.

Daniel came beside me.

“He needs time.””

I looked at him.

“You don’t get to say that.””

He nodded.

“I deserve that.””

“Yes.””

For once, he didn’t defend himself.

That surprised me.

“You left,” I said.

“I know.””

“You missed birthdays.””

“I know.””

“You missed every moment.””

“I know.””

“Then don’t stand here acting like you understand what he needs.””

Daniel looked down.

“I don’t.””

The honesty caught me off guard.

“I only know what it feels like to lose him.””

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel stared toward Marcus.

“I watched him grow up from far away.””

My anger softened slightly.

Only slightly.

“Why?””

“Because Patricia made sure I stayed away.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Daniel pulled out his phone.

He showed me old messages.

Threats.

Warnings.

Promises that if he returned, she would expose things about him.

“She knew my weaknesses.””

“What weaknesses?””

He looked at me.

“The mistakes I made.””

The room was quiet.

“You cheated,” I said.

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

The admission was immediate.

“I was wrong.””

I looked away.

After twenty-five years, hearing him admit it should have felt satisfying.

Instead, it just felt sad.

“Patricia used that.””

Daniel continued.

“She told me if I came back, she would make sure Marcus hated me.””

“And you believed her?””

“I was afraid.””

I shook my head.

“Everyone was afraid.””

Vanessa sat nearby, silent.

I looked at her.

“You should have told us.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

“Why didn’t you?””

She looked at Marcus through the ballroom doors.

“Because I finally had a family.””

The answer hurt.

Because I understood.

She had lost her first family.

And she was terrified of losing another.

Then a voice came from behind us.

“Interesting.””

We all turned.

The wedding coordinator stood there.

But she wasn’t holding papers.

She was holding a phone.

“What is that?”” Daniel asked.

She looked nervous.

“A recording.””

I stepped closer.

“From where?””

“The safe room.””

Everyone froze.

“I found it hidden behind the cabinet.””

She pressed play.

At first, there was only static.

Then a voice.

Patricia.

Older.

Angry.

“Gloria always gets everything.””

My stomach dropped.

Another voice answered.

A man.

Daniel.

No.

Not Daniel.

Someone else.

“I told you the plan would work.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Who is that?””

Nobody knew.

The recording continued.

Patricia said:

“Once Marcus believes his mother stole the money, everything falls apart.””

My blood ran cold.

Then the man replied:

“And Vanessa?””

“She will do exactly what we need.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

The coordinator stopped the recording.

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel whispered:

“She was using her.””

Marcus suddenly appeared in the doorway.

We all turned.

He had heard enough.

His face was pale.

“How long were you listening?”” I asked.

He looked at Vanessa.

“Long enough.””

Vanessa stood.

“Marcus—”

He raised his hand.

“Who was the man?””

Nobody answered.

Daniel looked terrified.

Because he recognized the voice.

Marcus noticed.

“Dad.””

Daniel looked at him.

“It’s someone from my past.””

“Who?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then he whispered:

“Your uncle.””

The room went silent.

I felt my heart stop.

My husband’s brother.

A man who had disappeared years ago.

A man everyone thought was dead.

Marcus stared.

“Why would my uncle do this?””

Daniel looked at the recording.

May you like

And said:

“Because he always believed you should have been his son.””
