Chapter 14: The Family We Lost
The photograph shook in my hands.
Twenty-five years.
Twenty-five years of questions.
Twenty-five years of wondering where my daughter was.
And the answer had been there all along.
Patricia.
My closest friend.
The woman who cried with me.
The woman who promised she would help me.
The woman who knew the pain of losing my child because she was the one who caused it.
I couldn’t breathe.
Marcus gently took the picture from me.
“Mom.””
I looked at him.
“That’s her.””
My voice broke.
“That’s Patricia.””
Vanessa stood beside him.
Her face was filled with horror.
“She raised me.””
Nobody spoke.
The ballroom disappeared.
The guests disappeared.
The wedding disappeared.
There was only the truth.
A truth that had taken twenty-five years to arrive.
Daniel looked at the photograph.
“I didn’t know.””
I turned toward him.
“You knew she was involved.””
“Yes.””
“But not this?””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“I thought she helped hide our daughter.””
I stared.
“You thought?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I was wrong.””
Marcus looked between us.
“What happened that day?””
I had spent years avoiding this memory.
But there was no place left to run.
“Patricia came to the hospital.””
Vanessa listened carefully.
“She said she wanted to help me.””
My voice shook.
“She held my daughter.””
I touched my chest.
“And then she was gone.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“You were taken?””
Vanessa nodded slowly.
“I think so.””
I looked at her.
“I’m sorry.””
The words were small.
But they carried twenty-five years of pain.
Vanessa cried.
“I spent my whole life thinking nobody wanted me.””
I stepped closer.
“That was never true.””
For a moment, we stood there.
Not as strangers.
Not as a mother and daughter-in-law.
As family.
Then Marcus’s phone rang.
Everyone froze.
He looked at the screen.
Unknown number.
Again.
He answered.
“Richard.””
A laugh came through.
“You found the picture.””
Marcus tightened his grip.
“You ruined my family.””
Richard’s voice was calm.
“No.””
“You did.””
“I revealed what was already broken.””
Marcus looked furious.
“Where are you?””
“Where your mother’s story began.””
The old address.
Everyone understood.
Daniel stepped forward.
“You’re at the house.””
Richard laughed.
“Your father always was slow.””
Daniel’s expression darkened.
“Let them go.””
A pause.
Then Richard replied:
“I never touched anyone.””
Marcus frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Richard continued.
“Your sister came willingly.””
Vanessa froze.
“What?””
The voice became softer.
“She wanted answers.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Vanessa?””
She shook her head.
“I didn’t.””
But then she stopped.
Everyone noticed.
“What?”” Marcus asked.
Her face changed.
“I…”
She looked terrified.
“I remember going there.””
The room went silent.
“When?””
“Before the wedding.””
Marcus stepped back.
“You went to Richard’s house?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She looked at me.
“To find the truth.””
My heart hurt.
“And you found him.””
She nodded.
“He told me everything.””
Marcus looked devastated.
“You met the man who was trying to destroy us.””
“I didn’t know.””
“You knew enough.””
Vanessa cried.
“I thought he was helping me find my family.””
Richard’s voice interrupted.
“You see?””
Everyone froze.
He was still on the phone.
“She’s always been closer to the truth than you.””
Marcus shouted:
“What do you want?””
Richard answered immediately.
“What should have always been mine.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Richard.””
“You stole my life.””
“No.””
“I was the smarter brother.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You were the crueler one.””
A pause.
Then Richard said:
“Go to the house.””
Marcus looked at the phone.
“Why?””
“Because there is something there Gloria needs to see.””
The call ended.
No goodbye.
No threat.
Just silence.
Marcus looked at me.
“Are you going?””
I looked at the photograph.
At Vanessa.
At Daniel.
At my son.
“Yes.””

Because after twenty-five years of running from the past…
it was time to face it.
