Chapter 8: The Evidence Hidden in the Safe

“Who?”” Marcus demanded.

Daniel didn’t answer.

He looked toward the ballroom.

“The person is still here.””

Everyone froze.

Marcus grabbed his arm.

“Stop playing games.””

“I’m not.””

“Then say the name.””

Daniel looked at me.

“I need you to hear everything first.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice surprised even me.

“No more secrets.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“You’re right.””

He placed the document on the table.

“The money was moved three days ago.””

Marcus looked confused.

“Moved?””

“Yes.””

“By who?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

She immediately stepped back.

“Why are you looking at me?””

“Because you were told a lie.””

“What lie?””

“That your adoption records were complete.””

Vanessa frowned.

“What does that have to do with money?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Everything.””

I picked up the document.

The page was old.

Official.

My eyes scanned the words.

Then I saw the signature.

My hands started shaking.

“This is impossible.””

Marcus came closer.

“What?””

I couldn’t speak.

Because the signature belonged to someone I trusted.

Someone I never suspected.

Daniel whispered:

“Your sister wasn’t taken by strangers.””

I looked up.

“Then who?””

He answered quietly.

“Your best friend.””

The name came out like a wound reopening.

“Patricia?””

Marcus looked confused.

“Who is Patricia?””

I sat down.

Because suddenly I was twenty-five years younger.

A young mother.

A woman who thought she had people around her who loved her.

Patricia was the woman who held my hand in the hospital.

The woman who cried with me when my baby disappeared.

The woman who told me she would help me find my daughter.

The woman who later moved away.

“She knew where my daughter was.””

Vanessa stared.

“My whole life…”

Her voice broke.

“She knew?””

I nodded slowly.

“She knew.””

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“And you knew too?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“I suspected.””

My anger returned.

“You suspected?””

Daniel looked at me.

“I spent years trying to find proof.””

“You should have told me.””

“I was trying to protect—”

“Don’t say that word.””

The room went silent.

Daniel stopped.

Because he knew.

That word had become poison.

Marcus walked toward the window.

“My entire life is a lie.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

He turned.

“Yes.””

His eyes were full of pain.

“I thought I knew my family.””

I walked toward him.

“You do.””

“No, Mom.””

He looked at Vanessa.

“At least one person here knew more than they told me.””

Vanessa looked down.

“I was scared.””

Marcus shook his head.

“I know.””

A strange sadness filled the room.

Because despite everything, he still loved her.

Even now.

The security officer appeared again.

“Mrs. Gloria?””

We all turned.

He looked nervous.

“We found something else.””

He held up a small evidence bag.

Inside was a lock of gray hair.

My hair.

My stomach turned.

“Where did you find that?””

“Near the private hallway entrance.””

Marcus stared.

“So whoever did this left evidence behind?””

The officer nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Or they wanted you to find it.””

Everyone looked at him.

“What do you mean?”” I asked.

Daniel pointed at the bag.

“Look closely.””

Marcus took it.

There was something attached.

A tiny piece of paper.

A message.

Vanessa read it first.

Her face changed.

“What?””

Marcus took the paper.

His eyes moved.

Then he whispered:

“No.””

“What does it say?”” I asked.

He handed it to me.

Three words.

*“Ask your son.””*

I looked at Marcus.

“What does that mean?””

He shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

But Daniel did.

And the look on his face terrified me.

“Daniel.””

He didn’t answer.

“Tell me.””

He looked at Marcus.

Then me.

“Because whoever did this believes Marcus knows the truth.””

Marcus stepped back.

“I don’t.””

Daniel’s voice was barely a whisper.

“You might.””

My heart sank.

“No.””

Daniel reached into his pocket.

He pulled out an old photograph.

A photograph of a little boy.

Marcus.

But the photo was not taken by me.

Not in our home.

Not anywhere I recognized.

On the back was a handwritten date.

The same day my daughter disappeared.

May you like

And underneath it was a message.

*“The son you raised was never the only child you had.””*
