Chapter 10: The Choice That Broke the Family
Marcus read the sentence again.
Then again.
Like the words might change if he stared at them long enough.
*“Your mother chose you. Your father chose her. Now you must choose who to believe.””*
The envelope slipped slightly in his hand.
I watched my son’s face collapse under the weight of a decision nobody should ever have to make.
A child should never have to choose between the people who created him.
A husband should never have to question whether his entire life was built on a lie.
And yet, there we were.
On what was supposed to be the happiest day of his life.
“Marcus,” I whispered.
He didn’t look at me.
“Who wrote this?””
Nobody answered.
His eyes moved to Daniel.
Then to Vanessa.
Then back to me.
“Everyone keeps telling me they were protecting me.””
His voice was quiet.
“But somehow, I’m always the last person to know anything.””
I stepped forward.
“You deserve the truth.””
He laughed softly.
“Do I?””
The question hurt.
Because I knew where it came from.
“I spent my whole life thinking Dad abandoned us,” Marcus said.
“I spent my whole life believing you were the only person who stayed.””
“I was.””
“But you still hid things.””
I lowered my eyes.
“Yes.””
That was the only answer I could give.
No excuses.
No explanations.
Just the truth.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Marcus.””
He looked at her.
“What?””
Her eyes were filled with tears.
“I never wanted to hurt you.””
“But you knew.””
She swallowed.
“Yes.””
“When did you know?””
She hesitated.
“Before we got engaged.””
The silence was unbearable.
Marcus looked like the air had been taken from the room.
“You knew I was your brother.””
“No.””
Her answer came immediately.
“I knew we might be related.””
“Might be?””
“I wasn’t sure.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Because every time I tried, something stopped me.””
“What stopped you?””
She looked at me.
And I knew.
The answer was coming.
“My adoptive mother contacted me.””
My heart tightened.
“Patricia?””
Vanessa nodded.
“She told me if I exposed the truth, she would ruin your mother.””
Marcus stared.
“Why?””
Vanessa’s voice shook.
“Because she said Gloria destroyed her life.””
I felt anger rise in my chest.
“Destroyed hers?””
I stepped forward.
“She took my child.””
Vanessa flinched.
“I know.””
The room went silent.
Marcus turned toward her.
“You know?””
Vanessa wiped her tears.
“She told me.””
“What exactly did she tell you?””
Vanessa looked away.
“She said your mother abandoned me.””
The words felt like another knife.
“I never abandoned you.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“I know that now.””
“Then why did you believe her?””
“Because she was the only mother I knew.””
That answer stopped me.
Because it was true.
A child believes the person who raises them.
Even when that person is wrong.
Marcus walked toward the window.
Outside, guests were still waiting.
Still expecting music.
Still expecting vows.
Nobody knew the wedding had become an investigation into a family tragedy.
“I need to understand something,” Marcus said.
Everyone became silent.
“Who moved the money?””
Daniel looked at him.
“Patricia.””
Marcus turned.
“What?””
“She needed access.””
“Why?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Because she believed the money belonged to her.””
I frowned.
“That money was for Marcus.””
Daniel nodded.
“I know.””
“Then why would she think it was hers?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because she believed she paid for your life.””
My expression changed.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“Years ago, when you were struggling after I left, Patricia helped you.””
I froze.
“She gave me a loan.””
Marcus looked surprised.
“You never told me.””
“Because I paid her back.””
Daniel nodded.
“You did.””
“Then why?””
“Because she didn’t think you did.””
I shook my head.
“That’s impossible.””
Daniel reached into his jacket.
He pulled out another document.
“This is from Patricia’s lawyer.””
Marcus took it.
His eyes moved quickly.
Then he stopped.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“She claimed she funded your entire recovery after Dad left.””
“That’s a lie.””
“I know.””
“But why would she write that?””
Daniel answered.
“Because she needed a reason.””
“A reason for what?””
“To convince Vanessa that you stole from her.””
My heart stopped.
“Vanessa?””
Everyone looked at her.
Daniel continued.
“Patricia convinced Vanessa that the wedding fund was actually money taken from her adoptive family.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“That’s what she told me.””
Marcus looked at her.
“And you believed it?””
“I didn’t know what to believe.””
“You checked the safe.””
Vanessa looked down.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I wanted proof.””
Marcus stepped back.
“Proof of what?””
“That my entire life wasn’t built on a lie.””
His expression softened slightly.
But only slightly.
“What happened after you checked?””
Vanessa looked terrified.
“I saw the money.””
“And?””
“I didn’t touch it.””
“Then what?””
She took a shaky breath.
“I saw someone else.””
Everyone froze.
“Who?””
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
“I saw your father.””
Daniel’s face changed.
Marcus turned.
“You were there?””
Daniel said nothing.
That was enough.
Marcus’s voice became dangerous.
“Dad.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I was trying to fix what I broke.””
The room went silent.
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
He looked toward the door.
“No more.””
He walked out.
I followed.
“Marcus.””
He stopped.
But he didn’t turn around.
“I need space.””
“Please.””
His shoulders dropped.
“I don’t know who my family is anymore.””
May you like
Then he walked away.
And for the first time in thirty years, I watched my son leave me.
