Chapter 12: The Mother Who Kept the Last Secret

I drove to Renee's house with Margaret following behind.

My mother was sitting at the dining table when I arrived.

She looked exhausted.

Her hands were wrapped around a cup of tea that had gone cold.

When she saw me, she stood.

"Darius.""

I didn't hug her.

Not yet.

I placed the photograph on the table.

"Why is your name written on the back?""

She looked at it.

Then she closed her eyes.

"I was hoping you wouldn't find that.""

I felt anger rising.

"How long have you known Officer Bell?""

She sat down slowly.

"Since your father was alive.""

"Why?""

"Because your father asked me to help him.""

"Help him do what?""

She stared at her hands.

"Keep Marcus's death from destroying the family.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Everyone keeps saying that. Nobody explains what actually happened.""

My mother began crying.

"I was at the hospital that night.""

I froze.

"What?""

"After the accident. I went there.""

"Why?""

"Your father called me. He said Marcus was alive when the ambulance arrived.""

I felt my heart pound.

"Was he?""

She nodded.

"Yes. For a little while.""

I gripped the back of a chair.

"Did you see him?""

"Yes.""

"What did he say?""

My mother covered her face.

"He asked for you.""

I closed my eyes.

She continued.

"He said he needed to tell you something about Tiana. He said she had taken something from him.""

"What?""

"His phone.""

I looked at Margaret.

She immediately began taking notes.

My mother wiped her cheeks.

"Your father told me not to speak about it. He said the police were handling everything.""

"Then why did you meet Officer Bell?""

"Because he came to me after the funeral. He said Marcus had left behind a recording. He wanted to know whether I had heard it.""

I stared at her.

"Did you?""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

"What was on it?""

My mother looked directly at me.

"Marcus said Tiana wasn't driving alone.""

I felt the room tighten.

"Who was with her?""

She shook her head.

"I never heard the name clearly.""

"Mom, please.""

She leaned forward.

"But I recognized the voice.""

I stopped breathing.

"Whose voice?""

She looked toward Renee.

My sister stood by the kitchen doorway, crying.

Then my mother whispered:

"Your father.""

I stepped backward.

"No.""

"He was in the back seat.""

I stared at her.

"You're saying Dad was in the car?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

My mother shook her head.

"I don't know. He never explained. He told me he had gone there to stop Marcus from reporting the financial fraud.""

I felt dizzy.

"Was Tiana driving?""

My mother nodded.

"And Marcus was in the passenger seat?""

"Yes.""

"Then what happened?""

She looked down.

"Your father said there was an argument. He said Marcus tried to get out of the car. Then the vehicle struck the barrier.""

I couldn't speak.

"Was it an accident?""

My mother began sobbing.

"I don't know.""

I looked at her.

"Did you ask?""

"Yes. Your father told me to stop asking questions.""

"Did you believe him?""

She shook her head.

"No.""

I stared at the photograph.

The woman who had raised me had known that my father was involved in my brother's death.

She had known for ten years.

And she had stayed silent.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

My mother reached for my hand.

"Because I was afraid of losing you.""

I pulled away.

"You let me believe my brother died because of a random driver.""

"I know.""

"You let me marry the woman who was in that car.""

She began crying harder.

"I know.""

"You let me raise a child without knowing he was my brother's son.""

She looked up sharply.

"Micah?""

I nodded.

My mother covered her mouth.

"Oh, Darius.""

I stood.

"Don't.""

She reached for me again.

"Please listen.""

I looked at her.

"There's more.""

I didn't know how much more my heart could take.

She opened her handbag and removed a small photograph.

It showed my father standing outside a courthouse.

Beside him was a young woman holding a baby.

The woman was Vanessa.

I stared.

"When was this taken?""

"Five years ago.""

"That's impossible. Vanessa was already dead.""

My mother shook her head.

"No. This was taken before she died.""

I examined the photograph.

There was a date printed in the corner.

October 14.

Vanessa had died on October 19.

Five days later.

"Why was she with Dad?""

My mother swallowed.

"She was trying to tell him something.""

"What?""

"That Tiana had taken money from Marcus and was now trying to take money from Jalen.""

I closed my eyes.

My mother continued.

"Your father promised Vanessa he would protect the children. He told her he would make sure Tiana never gained control of the inheritance.""

I stared at the photograph.

"He lied.""

My mother nodded.

"Yes.""

Then she reached into her handbag again.

This time, she removed a small envelope.

"I kept this because I couldn't bring myself to destroy it.""

My name was written across the front.

The handwriting belonged to Vanessa.

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Darius,

If your father has told you that everything is fine, don't believe him.

He knows what happened to Marcus.

He also knows that Tiana has another reason for wanting our children.

I looked up.

Another reason?

The letter continued.

She isn't only interested in the money. She believes one of the children has a right to something your father hid years ago.

I felt a chill.

Something worth much more than the inheritance.

At the bottom, Vanessa had written:

Ask your mother about the property in Ashford.

I turned toward my mother.

"What property?""

She began shaking her head.

"I hoped Vanessa would never bring that up.""

"Mom.""

She looked at me with frightened eyes.

"Your father owned a house in Ashford. He kept it separate from the company.""

"What's inside?""

"I don't know.""

"Why does Tiana want it?""

My mother hesitated.

Then she whispered:

"Because your father told me he had hidden the original ownership documents there.""

Margaret leaned forward.

"Who legally owns the property?""

My mother answered without looking up.

"Jalen and Micah.""

I froze.

"Both boys?""

She nodded.

"Your father transferred it into a trust for them shortly before he died.""

I looked at the letter again.

Vanessa had known about the property.

Marcus had known about the money.

Tiana had been trying to control both children's inheritance.

And my father had hidden the documents.

My phone suddenly vibrated.

An email had arrived from the county investigator.

Subject: *Recovered Evidence — Marcus Carter Case.*

I opened the attachment.

It was a photograph of the original police report.

The final page contained a handwritten statement from Officer Bell.

The driver identified herself as Tiana Brooks. The rear passenger was identified as Edward Carter.

My father's name.

Below it was another sentence.

Before emergency services arrived, Edward Carter removed a small black case from the vehicle.

I looked at Margaret.

"What was in the case?""

She read the next line.

Then her face went pale.

The report stated:

The case contained the original deeds to the Ashford property and a sealed document naming the legal beneficiaries.

I stared at the screen.

Someone had hidden the most important evidence of all.

And the final line of the report made my blood run cold.

*The case was never recovered.*

My phone rang.

The caller ID displayed Tiana's name.

I answered.

She didn't greet me.

She simply said:

"Darius, I know you've seen the report.""

I said nothing.

Then she whispered:

"Your sons aren't the only people entitled to that property.""

"Who else?""

A pause.

Then Tiana gave me an answer I wasn't prepared for.

"Me. And if you want to know why, you should ask Vanessa who Lily's biological father really was.""

I looked at Margaret.

She had stopped writing.

May you like

Because suddenly, the question wasn't just what Tiana had stolen.

It was whether the little girl we had been searching for belonged to someone else entirely.
