Chapter 5: The Photograph That Changed Everything

I stared at the photograph.

Vanessa looked younger than I remembered. Her hair was pulled back, and she was smiling down at the tiny baby in her arms.

I recognized the hospital blanket.

I recognized the bracelet on her wrist.

But I didn't recognize the child.

"Renee," I said, showing her the screen.

"Who is this?""

My sister's face drained of color.

She took the phone.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she sat down.

"Oh, Vanessa.""

I grabbed her shoulder.

"Tell me who that baby is.""

Renee looked at me.

"Your daughter.""

The room went silent.

I felt as though someone had struck me in the chest.

"My what?""

"Vanessa had another child.""

I shook my head.

"No. That's impossible.""

"She gave birth to a little girl before she died.""

I stepped backward.

"Why didn't she tell me?""

Renee's eyes filled.

"She tried.""

I remembered Vanessa's last months.

The unanswered phone calls.

The conversations that had suddenly become tense.

The nights she insisted she needed to be alone.

I had believed our marriage was falling apart because of financial stress.

"Where is she?"" I asked.

Renee shook her head.

"I don't know.""

"Who has her?""

"Vanessa arranged for someone to take care of her temporarily.""

"Who?""

Renee reached into her handbag and produced another document.

It was a hospital discharge summary.

The child's name was Lily.

Date of birth: five years ago.

Father: Darius Carter.

I grabbed the paper.

My name was there.

My date of birth.

My address.

Everything.

Except the signature acknowledging paternity.

It was blank.

"Why didn't anybody contact me?""

Renee looked down.

"Because Vanessa believed you weren't safe to tell.""

I stared at her.

"What are you saying?""

"She thought Tiana was monitoring her phone. She was afraid Tiana would find out about the baby.""

I felt sick.

"Why would Tiana care about another child?""

Renee answered quietly.

"Because Lily was also named as a beneficiary of Vanessa's estate.""

I looked at the document again.

There were two children's names.

Jalen Carter.

Lily Carter.

Both beneficiaries.

Both entitled to a share of the inheritance.

I suddenly understood why the trust had been so valuable to Tiana.

It wasn't just Jalen's money she had been after.

There had been another child.

Another inheritance.

Another secret.

"Who has Lily?"" I repeated.

Renee opened her mouth.

Before she could answer, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered immediately.

"Hello?""

A woman's voice came through.

"Mr. Carter?""

"Yes.""

"My name is Hannah Brooks. I was Vanessa's maternity nurse.""

My heart started racing.

"How did you get my number?""

"Your wife contacted me this morning.""

I looked at Renee.

"What did she tell you?""

"She said you were asking questions about Vanessa's daughter.""

I gripped the phone.

"Where is Lily?""

There was a long pause.

"She's safe, Mr. Carter. She's living with a family friend.""

"Why wasn't I told?""

"Because Vanessa asked me to protect her until certain documents could be delivered.""

"What documents?""

"An original letter. And a recording.""

I nearly dropped the phone.

"A recording of what?""

"Vanessa explaining what happened before she died.""

I looked at Renee.

She had gone completely still.

"Where can I meet you?""

"Not at your home.""

"Why?""

Hannah lowered her voice.

"Because someone has been asking questions about Lily for years.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Who?""

"Your wife.""

The call ended.

I immediately called Margaret.

She answered on the second ring.

"Darius?""

"I found out Vanessa had another child. A daughter named Lily.""

There was silence.

Then Margaret said, "Don't contact Tiana about this.""

"She already knows.""

"Then we have to assume she's aware of the legal implications.""

"Vanessa left a recording.""

Margaret's voice sharpened.

"Where is it?""

"With a nurse named Hannah Brooks.""

"Don't meet her alone. I'll arrange for a secure meeting and have the documents preserved.""

I looked toward the kitchen.

Jalen was helping Micah pour cereal into two bowls.

Micah spilled milk across the counter.

Both boys laughed.

It was such an ordinary sound.

I wanted to protect it.

I wanted them to have ordinary childhoods.

But now I had to explain that they might have a sister they had never met.

And I had to find out why their mother had died believing someone wanted her children separated.

My phone rang again.

This time, it was Tiana.

I answered.

"What do you want?""

Her voice was calm.

"Bring the boys home.""

"They're staying with me.""

"Darius, you're making a mistake.""

"You stole money from Jalen.""

"That money was used to maintain the family.""

"That money belonged to my son.""

She laughed softly.

"Your son? Which one?""

I froze.

"What does that mean?""

She continued.

"Have you met Lily yet?""

I said nothing.

"She's adorable," Tiana added.

"She has Vanessa's eyes.""

My blood ran cold.

"Have you seen her?""

"I've seen photographs.""

"Where is she?""

"That isn't important.""

"It is to me.""

Tiana sighed.

"You're forgetting something, Darius. Vanessa didn't leave you everything.""

"Neither did you.""

Her voice changed.

"Be careful.""

I ended the call.

Then I noticed something on the kitchen counter.

Jalen's school backpack was open.

A small envelope was sticking out of the front pocket.

I recognized the handwriting immediately.

Tiana's.

I opened it.

Inside was a printed photograph of Lily.

On the back, someone had written:

One child was easy to control. Don't make me deal with the other two.

I stared at the words.

Then Jalen appeared beside me.

"Dad?""

I turned.

He was holding a small plastic dinosaur.

"What's wrong?""

I folded the paper.

"Nothing, buddy.""

He looked at the photograph.

"Is that my sister?""

I couldn't answer.

Jalen looked down.

Then he whispered:

"Mom told me I had a sister once.""

I crouched.

"When?""

"When you were away.""

May you like

He swallowed.

"She said if I ever tried to find her, I'd make her disappear too.""
