Chapter 14: The House That Held Every Answer

The hearing began at nine the following morning.

Tiana arrived wearing a cream-colored suit and carrying a leather briefcase.

She looked nothing like the woman who had stood in our dining room while Jalen begged for dinner.

Her hair was perfectly styled.

Her makeup was flawless.

She smiled at the court clerk.

Then she saw me.

The smile disappeared.

Her attorney, a man named Richard Coleman, approached Margaret.

"Good morning.""

Margaret didn't return the greeting.

"Your client has submitted a deed containing a witness signature from a woman who was deceased at the time.""

Richard adjusted his tie.

"That is an allegation.""

"It's a documented discrepancy.""

"We'll address it.""

Inside the courtroom, Tiana sat beside her attorney.

When the judge entered, everyone stood.

The hearing began with Margaret presenting the financial records from Jalen's trust.

She explained the unauthorized withdrawals, the missing documentation, and the transfer request that had been submitted using my forged signature.

Tiana's attorney objected repeatedly.

"Your Honor, Mrs. Carter was the children's primary caregiver. These expenditures were made for the benefit of the household.""

The judge looked over his glasses.

"Then why were luxury purchases made using funds belonging to a minor beneficiary?""

Richard shifted in his chair.

"Those transactions are being reviewed.""

Margaret stood.

"Your Honor, we have evidence that the money was used for personal purchases, including a vehicle, jewelry, and vacations.""

Tiana leaned toward her attorney.

He whispered something.

She shook her head.

Then Margaret presented the photographs of the blue food container, Jalen's handwritten account, and the note found in Micah's room.

The judge examined the photographs.

His expression hardened.

"Mrs. Carter, did you restrict this child's access to meals?""

Tiana stood.

"No, Your Honor. He has a history of exaggerating.""

Jalen wasn't in the courtroom. Margaret had advised against exposing him to the proceedings.

But his written statement had been submitted.

The judge read it silently.

Then he looked at Tiana.

"Your response?""

She swallowed.

"I was trying to establish boundaries.""

"By providing spoiled food?""

"That is not what happened.""

Margaret presented the photograph of the blue bowl.

Tiana's attorney stood.

"We object to the characterization of these materials.""

The judge raised one hand.

"Overruled.""

Then Margaret introduced the Ashford deed.

She placed a copy before the judge.

"Your Honor, the document identifies Vanessa Carter as a witness. However, the recorded date is several months after her death.""

The courtroom became silent.

Tiana stared at the document.

For the first time that morning, she looked genuinely frightened.

Richard immediately requested a recess.

The judge granted ten minutes.

Outside the courtroom, Tiana approached me.

"Darius.""

I kept walking.

"Please. Just listen.""

I stopped.

"What?""

She lowered her voice.

"You don't understand what happened.""

"Then explain it.""

"Your father promised me that property.""

"That doesn't make it yours.""

"He owed me.""

"For what?""

Her eyes filled.

"Everything I sacrificed.""

I stared at her.

"You stole from my son.""

"I raised him!""

"You denied him food.""

"He was difficult!""

"He was twelve.""

Tiana looked around, then stepped closer.

"Do you know what it's like to live in a house where everything belongs to someone else? Where your husband treats another woman's child like he's made of glass?""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"Jalen was a child.""

"And Micah was my child!""

"Micah is my child too.""

She shook her head.

"Not biologically.""

I looked at her.

"I don't care.""

Her expression changed.

For a moment, I saw something almost like regret.

Then it vanished.

"You'll regret choosing them over me.""

I stepped away.

"I didn't choose against you. You made your choices.""

The hearing resumed.

Margaret called Hannah to testify about Vanessa's letter and the circumstances surrounding Lily's birth.

Then she introduced the laboratory report establishing my paternity.

Tiana's attorney objected.

The judge ordered the report preserved for independent verification.

Finally, Margaret presented a document from the company records.

It showed that my father had transferred the Ashford property into a trust for Jalen and Micah.

The deed Tiana had submitted was inconsistent with the original property records.

The judge ordered a temporary freeze on any sale, transfer, or encumbrance of the property.

He also suspended Tiana's access to the children's trust accounts pending further proceedings.

Then he turned toward her.

"Mrs. Carter, I am also ordering an independent review of the alleged forged signatures and the financial transactions submitted in this hearing.""

Tiana lowered her head.

I thought it was over.

Then Richard stood.

"Your Honor, my client wishes to submit additional evidence.""

Margaret turned sharply.

"What evidence?""

Richard opened his briefcase.

He removed a small envelope.

"An original document recovered from the Ashford property.""

The judge examined it.

His expression changed.

"What is this?""

Richard answered:

"A private agreement between Edward Carter and Tiana Brooks.""

The document was dated six months before my father's death.

It contained a clause stating that Tiana would receive a financial interest in the property if she provided information about Marcus Carter's final movements.

I looked at Margaret.

She whispered:

"This is potentially important.""

The judge ordered both parties to review the document.

I examined the signature.

It appeared to belong to my father.

But beneath it was another signature.

Tiana's.

And beside hers was a third name.

Robert Hayes.

The man who had called me.

I turned toward Tiana.

She was staring at the floor.

Then Margaret noticed a paragraph near the bottom.

She read it twice.

Her face went pale.

"What?"" I whispered.

She pointed to a sentence.

The beneficiary shall receive full ownership upon confirmation that the original black case has been recovered.

I looked at the judge.

Then at Richard.

"Where is the black case?""

Richard closed his briefcase.

"My client has no knowledge of its present location.""

Tiana suddenly stood.

"That's not true!""

Her attorney grabbed her arm.

"Sit down.""

But she continued.

"Your Honor, the case belongs to me!""

The judge struck his gavel.

"Mrs. Carter, sit down immediately.""

Tiana looked at me.

Her eyes were wild.

"You don't know what's inside it, Darius!""

I stood.

"Then tell us.""

She began crying.

"Your father put everything in there.""

"What everything?""

She looked toward the courtroom doors.

Then she whispered:

"The original documents proving who caused Marcus's accident.""

Nobody moved.

The judge ordered an immediate recess and directed the parties to preserve all relevant evidence.

As we left the courtroom, Margaret received a call.

She listened for several seconds.

Then she turned toward me.

"Darius, the investigators have located Thomas Bell.""

"Where?""

"At the Ashford property.""

My heart began racing.

"Why?""

Margaret lowered her voice.

"Because someone has been trying to break into the house.""

May you like

Then she added:

"And they found the black case.""
