Chapter 2: The Woman Who Knew Too Much
I didn't sleep that night.
Jalen fell asleep in my bedroom, curled beneath the comforter he'd used when he was little. Micah slept beside him, one hand wrapped around his brother's wrist.
I sat in the hallway until sunrise.
At 6:15 a.m., I heard footsteps.
Tiana emerged from the kitchen wearing a silk robe. She carried a cup of coffee and looked perfectly composed.
"You're still angry," she observed.
I stood.
"Where are the receipts?""
She took a sip.
"Good morning to you too.""
"Don't play games with me.""
She placed the cup on the counter.
"Fine. I'll show you.""
She opened a drawer and pulled out a thick envelope.
Inside were grocery receipts, restaurant bills, and printed bank statements.
I began sorting through them.
The dates were easy to recognize.
Every time I'd traveled for work, the grocery spending dropped dramatically.
During one five-day trip, the household had spent less than twenty dollars on food.
Yet the following week, Tiana had purchased nearly four hundred dollars' worth of children's clothing and toys.
I looked at her.
"Where did the grocery money go?""
"Household expenses.""
"Which ones?""
"Electricity. Cleaning supplies. Things you don't pay attention to because you're always working.""
I pulled out another receipt.
It was from a restaurant.
Two adult meals. One child's meal.
No fourth meal.
The date matched my anniversary dinner with Tiana.
"Where was Jalen?""
"At home.""
"With a babysitter?""
She shrugged.
"With Micah.""
I stared at her.
"You left a six-year-old responsible for a twelve-year-old?""
"Jalen is old enough to make a sandwich.""
"Apparently, he wasn't even allowed to make one.""
Tiana rubbed her forehead.
"You're exhausting.""
Before I could answer, my phone rang.
It was my older sister, Renee.
I answered.
"What's wrong?""
"Darius, I need you to come over.""
"Now?""
"Yes. It's about Jalen.""
My grip tightened.
"What about him?""
There was a pause.
"I found something in the old family photographs. Something I think you need to see.""
I looked at Tiana.
She was watching me.
"Renee, what did you find?""
"Your wife's name.""
I went completely still.
"What?""
"Come alone.""
The call ended.
Tiana's face had gone pale.
"Who was that?""
"Renee.""
"Why?""
"She wants to talk about Jalen.""
Tiana reached for her coffee.
"Your sister has always hated me.""
"Maybe she has a reason.""
I grabbed my keys.
Before leaving, I checked on the boys.
Jalen was awake.
"Dad?""
"Yeah?""
"Are you going to work?""
"Not today.""
He looked relieved.
I sat on the edge of the bed.
"You're coming with me and Micah to Aunt Renee's.""
He hesitated.
"Is Mom coming?""
"No.""
He nodded and quietly pulled the blanket around Micah.
Then he asked a question that made me stop breathing.
"Dad, if you divorce Mom, will you still keep me?""
I cupped his face.
"Listen to me. You are my son. Nobody gets to change that.""
He looked at me for a long moment.
"Promise?""
"I promise.""
An hour later, we arrived at Renee's house.
My sister opened the door before I could knock.
She was holding an old photograph.
"Darius," she whispered, "you need to sit down.""
The picture showed a younger Tiana standing beside a woman I recognized immediately.
Jalen's late mother, Vanessa.
But that wasn't the shocking part.
On the back, in my mother's handwriting, were the words:
Vanessa and Tiana — sisters, 2009.
I looked up.
"Why didn't I know they were related?""
Renee placed the photograph on the table.
"Because Vanessa asked us not to tell you.""
"Why?""
My sister's eyes filled.
"Because Tiana had been obsessed with your life long before you married her.""
I stared at the picture.
Renee continued.
"She knew about your marriage. She knew about your son. And she knew exactly how much money Vanessa had left behind.""
I sat down slowly.
"What money?""
Renee opened a folder.
"Vanessa left Jalen a trust.""
I felt the room grow colder.
"How much?""
"Enough to secure his future. His education, his medical care, and his living expenses.""
"Who controls it?""
Renee hesitated.
"That's the problem.""
She pushed a document toward me.
The signature at the bottom belonged to Tiana.
She had been appointed temporary financial guardian after Vanessa died.
I read the date twice.
It was signed three years before Tiana and I married.
"How could she be his guardian before she even knew me?""
Renee shook her head.
"She didn't become his guardian because of you. She became his guardian because Vanessa trusted her sister.""
My stomach turned.
"Where is the money now?""
Renee looked at Jalen.
Then she looked back at me.
"That's what I've been trying to find out.""
Jalen had been sitting quietly beside Micah.
He suddenly spoke.
"Aunt Renee?""
Renee turned toward him.
"Yes, sweetheart?""
"Is that why Mom gets angry when I ask about my birthday money?""
I looked at him.
"What birthday money?""
He lowered his eyes.
"Mom said Grandma left me money for when I turned twelve.""
Renee's hand flew to her mouth.
Jalen continued.
"She said it was for my future. But when I asked if I could buy a bicycle, she said I hadn't earned it.""
I looked at the document again.
Then my phone vibrated.
An email had arrived from the bank.
Subject: *Notice of Beneficiary Inquiry — Jalen Carter Trust.*
I opened it.
There was a PDF attached.
The first page showed the original balance.
The second showed the current balance.
The difference was more than I could comprehend.
Almost the entire trust had disappeared.
And the final transaction had been made just eleven days earlier.
