Chapter 13: The Father Nobody Expected
For several seconds, I couldn't move.
Tiana's final words kept repeating in my head.
Ask Vanessa who Lily's biological father really was.
I looked at Margaret.
"Can that be true?""
She didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she took my phone and asked Tiana to repeat what she'd said.
Tiana laughed.
"Still letting lawyers speak for you, Darius?""
"Answer the question.""
"Which question?""
"Who is Lily's biological father?""
There was a pause.
Then Tiana said something that made my stomach turn.
"Your brother.""
I closed my eyes.
"Marcus?""
"Yes.""
"That's impossible. Vanessa was married to me.""
"Marriage doesn't determine biology.""
Margaret took the phone.
"Mrs. Carter, this conversation is being documented. If you have evidence concerning the child's parentage, you should provide it to the appropriate authorities.""
Tiana laughed again.
"Of course. Another lawyer.""
Then she hung up.
I looked at my mother.
"Did Vanessa know?""
My mother nodded slowly.
"Yes.""
"Did she know Marcus was Lily's father?""
"She told me she suspected it.""
I felt sick.
"How?""
My mother reached for the letter.
"Marcus and Vanessa had been close friends before you met her. They had known each other for years. During a difficult period in your marriage, Vanessa spent several months away from you.""
I stared at her.
"Why didn't she tell me?""
"She said she was afraid of destroying your relationship with Marcus.""
I walked toward the window.
The family I thought I knew had been built on secrets.
My brother had fathered Micah.
My brother might also have fathered Lily.
And Tiana had apparently known about both children.
But one thing still didn't make sense.
"Why would Tiana claim Lily as her own?""
Margaret answered.
"Because if she can establish a biological or legal connection to the estate, she may be trying to challenge the property transfers.""
I turned.
"She's not Lily's mother.""
"We need proof of that," Margaret said.
"And we need to establish what Vanessa legally arranged.""
My phone vibrated.
A message had arrived from Hannah.
Darius, please call me immediately. Lily's guardians have received a letter from Tiana's attorney.
I called.
Hannah answered, sounding frightened.
"Mr. Carter, something terrible has happened.""
"What?""
"Tiana has filed an emergency petition claiming that Vanessa's daughter was secretly fathered by Marcus.""
"That's what she told me.""
"But that's not all.""
I gripped the phone.
"What else?""
"She's requesting temporary custody of Lily.""
I looked at Margaret.
"Can she do that?""
Margaret shook her head.
"Not simply by making an allegation.""
Hannah continued.
"The family caring for Lily is terrified. They received a letter saying they could be investigated for concealing a child from her biological relatives.""
I felt anger rise.
"Tell them not to sign anything.""
"I already have.""
"Keep Lily safe. We're coming.""
Margaret immediately arranged an emergency meeting with the family court attorney.
An hour later, we were sitting in a small conference room with Hannah and Lily's guardians, a couple named David and Susan Miller.
They had cared for Lily since she was an infant.
Susan held a photograph of the little girl.
"She's five," she said quietly.
"She loves dinosaurs, strawberries, and bedtime stories. She doesn't know anything about these inheritance disputes.""
I looked at the photograph.
Lily had dark curls and Vanessa's smile.
I felt an ache in my chest.
"Does she know about me?""
Susan shook her head.
"Vanessa told us you were her father. She asked us to wait until Lily was old enough to understand.""
I nodded.
"I won't force anything. I just want to meet her.""
Susan's eyes filled.
"We know.""
Margaret reviewed the guardianship documents.
Then she asked Hannah a question.
"Did Vanessa ever discuss Lily's biological father?""
Hannah hesitated.
"Yes.""
"Who did she identify?""
Hannah opened her handbag and removed a sealed envelope.
"She gave me this after Lily was born.""
Margaret examined it.
The envelope contained a private laboratory report.
The results were clear.
Lily's biological father was Darius Carter.
Not Marcus.
Not anyone else.
Me.
I stared at the report.
"Then why would Tiana say otherwise?""
Hannah looked at me.
"Because Vanessa told me Tiana had threatened to use a false paternity report to claim control over Lily's inheritance.""
Margaret examined the laboratory's certification.
"This report needs independent verification, but it is a significant piece of evidence.""
Susan held Lily's photograph tighter.
"Why would anyone do this to a child?""
Nobody answered.
Then Hannah spoke again.
"There's another document.""
She removed a second envelope.
Inside was Vanessa's handwritten statement.
Darius is Lily's father. I have never doubted that.
I felt my eyes burn.
She had known.
She had wanted me to know.
But she'd been afraid.
At the bottom of the letter was a final paragraph.
If Tiana ever tries to claim Lily, ask her about the night she brought me a different DNA report and demanded that I sign away my children's inheritance.
I looked at Margaret.
"Different DNA report?""
She nodded slowly.
"That sounds like evidence of fraud.""
Before we could discuss it further, a court officer entered the room.
"Mr. Carter?""
"Yes?""
"We've received an emergency filing from Tiana Carter.""
"What is she asking for?""
The officer looked at his papers.
"Temporary control of the Ashford property, access to the children's inheritance, and recognition as a financial beneficiary of the estate.""
Margaret stood.
"On what grounds?""
The officer handed her the document.
She read the first page.
Then the second.
Finally, she looked at me.
"Darius, there's a problem.""
"What?""
"Tiana has submitted an original deed.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"To Ashford?""
Margaret nodded.
The document showed that Tiana had been granted ownership of the property three days before my father died.
But there was something else.
The signature on the deed belonged to my father.
And the witness signature belonged to Vanessa.
I stared at it.
Vanessa had been dead for months when the document was supposedly signed.
Margaret slowly lowered the paper.
"This deed appears to contain a forged witness signature.""
I looked at the date again.
Then I noticed the name of the notary.
Thomas Bell.
The missing police officer.
Tiana hadn't just stolen the inheritance.
May you like
She had been preparing to take the property for years.
And now she was using a dead woman's signature to do it.
