Chapter 6: The Recording Vanessa Left Behind

I didn't let the boys return to the house that evening.

Margaret arranged for us to stay at a hotel under a different booking name while she worked on the emergency court filings.

Renee stayed with us.

For the first time in years, I was grateful my sister had refused to give up on Vanessa's warnings.

At 8:30 p.m., Margaret arrived carrying a leather folder.

She sat across from me in the hotel sitting area.

"We need to talk about the legal situation.""

I looked at her.

"Tell me.""

"First, the bank has frozen the remaining trust assets pending review. Second, I've filed for emergency protection of Jalen's inheritance. Third, we need to establish Lily's legal status and locate her safely.""

"Can Tiana take the boys?""

"Not without a court order, and we're documenting the circumstances surrounding the food deprivation and financial misconduct.""

I rubbed my face.

"She'll fight.""

"Probably.""

"She'll lie.""

"Then we'll need evidence.""

I handed her the photograph and the note I'd found in Jalen's backpack.

Margaret read it carefully.

Her expression hardened.

"Did Tiana put this in his bag?""

"I don't know.""

"Keep it. Don't write on it or alter it. I'll arrange for it to be documented.""

Renee entered carrying her phone.

"Hannah called.""

I stood.

"What did she say?""

"She's willing to meet us tomorrow morning. She has the recording.""

Margaret nodded.

"I'll accompany you.""

The next morning, we met Hannah at a small café near the hospital where Vanessa had delivered Lily.

She was in her late fifties, with silver hair and tired eyes.

When she saw me, she stood immediately.

"Mr. Carter.""

"Please. Call me Darius.""

She reached across the table.

"I'm sorry this took so long.""

I sat down.

"Do you know where my daughter is?""

Hannah nodded.

"She's with a family who has cared for her since infancy. Vanessa chose them because she trusted them.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Vanessa left specific instructions.""

I looked at Margaret.

She spoke gently.

"Do you have the original documents?""

Hannah opened her handbag.

She removed a small padded envelope.

Inside was a USB drive, a handwritten letter, and a copy of a legal guardianship agreement.

"Vanessa asked me to keep these together," Hannah explained.

"She said they should only be given to Darius if certain circumstances occurred.""

"What circumstances?""

Hannah looked directly at me.

"She said if Tiana ever gained control of Jalen's inheritance, or if either child was threatened, the recording should be released.""

My hands went cold.

Margaret placed the USB drive on the table.

"May we listen to it?""

Hannah nodded.

Margaret had brought a laptop.

She inserted the drive.

A video appeared.

Vanessa was sitting in a hospital room.

She looked exhausted, but her eyes were clear.

Then she spoke.

"Darius, if you're watching this, I'm sorry.""

My throat tightened.

"I wanted to tell you about Lily. I wanted to tell you everything. But I was afraid that if I did, Tiana would hurt you or the children.""

I gripped the edge of the table.

Vanessa continued.

"She came to see me after Lily was born. She told me that Jalen would never inherit anything unless I made her the sole guardian of both children.""

Margaret paused the video.

"Both children?""

Hannah nodded.

"Vanessa had already discovered that Tiana was trying to become the sole administrator of the estate.""

Margaret restarted the recording.

Vanessa looked directly into the camera.

"There's something else you need to understand. Tiana wasn't simply asking for money. She was threatening me with information about your marriage.""

I leaned closer.

"What information?""

Vanessa continued.

"She told me she knew something about the accident that killed your brother.""

My heart stopped.

My older brother, Marcus, had died in a car accident when I was twenty-four.

Tiana had never known him.

At least, I thought she hadn't.

Vanessa's voice trembled.

"She said Marcus had left behind a letter. She claimed she had seen it. She said it would destroy our family if it ever became public.""

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

I stared at the black screen.

"My brother died ten years before I met Tiana.""

Renee nodded.

"I know.""

"How could she have known anything about him?""

Hannah opened the envelope again.

"Vanessa left something else.""

It was a small key.

Attached was a paper tag with an address.

A storage facility.

Unit 214.

Margaret examined it.

"Do you know what's inside?""

Hannah shook her head.

"No. Vanessa told me the key should go to Darius if he ever discovered the truth about Marcus.""

I sat back.

My brother's death had been ruled an accident.

He had been driving home from work when another vehicle crossed the center line. The driver had fled, and nobody had ever been charged.

I remembered the funeral.

I remembered my mother crying.

I remembered Vanessa holding my hand while I promised myself I would never let anything happen to my family again.

Now Tiana was connected to a letter Marcus had supposedly left behind.

My phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number appeared.

*Stop looking into Vanessa's past. You have two children to protect. Don't make me remind you what happened to the first man who tried to expose me.*

I showed Margaret.

She immediately photographed the message.

"Don't respond," she said.

Then another notification appeared.

This one was from the storage facility.

*Unit 214 access request approved.*

I looked at Hannah.

"Did you authorize this?""

She shook her head.

"Nobody has the key except you.""

I stared at the screen.

The request had been made using my account.

But I hadn't created an account with that facility.

Margaret leaned forward.

"Darius, someone may be trying to access the storage unit before us.""

I stood.

"We need to go there.""

"Not alone," she warned.

"I understand.""

We drove to the facility with Margaret and Renee following behind.

The building was quiet, with rows of metal doors and fluorescent lights buzzing overhead.

Unit 214 was at the end of the second corridor.

I inserted the key.

It turned.

The door rolled upward.

Inside were several cardboard boxes, an old suitcase, and a wooden desk.

Everything was covered in dust except one box.

It had been opened recently.

I stepped inside.

On top was a photograph of Marcus.

Beside him stood a younger Tiana.

I stared at it.

My wife had known my brother.

And on the back of the photograph was a date.

Three weeks before his fatal accident.

Renee picked up a folded envelope from the desk.

"Darius," she whispered.

I turned.

She was holding a letter addressed to me.

The handwriting belonged to Marcus.

I opened it with shaking hands.

The first sentence read:

Darius, if anything happens to me, do not trust the woman who will eventually become your wife.

I stopped breathing.

May you like

Because beneath that sentence was another line.

She was in the car that night.
