Chapter 10: The Recording That Changed Everything
For several seconds, I couldn't take my eyes off the little silver memory card in Lily's hand.
"Your grandfather gave you this?""
Lily nodded.
"He told me to keep it somewhere nobody would look.""
"How long have you had it?""
"Since the night he died.""
My throat tightened.
"Why didn't you give it to your mother?""
"Because Grandpa told me not to. He said there were things even Mommy didn't know.""
I looked at Claire.
She was already closing the bedroom door.
"Let's listen," she whispered.
I inserted the memory card into the small recorder we'd found behind the bookshelf.
A single audio file appeared.
*LAST_INSTRUCTIONS_01.*
I pressed play.
My father's voice filled the room.
"Nia, if you're hearing this, then something has happened that I desperately hoped would never happen.""
I stopped breathing.
It was him.
The same gentle voice that had called me his little girl.
The same voice I hadn't heard in four years.
"I need you to understand something. Daniel didn't enter your life by accident.""
I gripped the edge of the desk.
My father's voice continued.
"Years ago, when I discovered what Arthur was doing with the Westbridge estate, I approached Daniel because I believed he could help us recover the missing funds.""
A pause.
"I was wrong.""
I looked at Lily.
She was watching the recorder with wide eyes.
"Daniel was already involved in the fraud. He had been moving money through several companies, using Arthur's name and the identities of people who trusted him.""
My father's breathing became audible.
"Then he met you.""
I felt tears gathering.
"He recognized your connection to me. He knew that marrying you would give him access to the remaining assets. I tried to stop the relationship, but you were in love, and I didn't want to destroy your happiness without proof.""
The recording crackled.
"That was my greatest mistake.""
Claire placed a hand on my shoulder.
My father continued.
"There is something else you must know. The night Arthur died, I was there.""
I closed my eyes.
"What?"" I whispered.
The recording continued.
"I arrived at the property after receiving a call from Evelyn. Arthur was frightened. He had discovered that Daniel had transferred Lily's inheritance into an offshore account.""
My heart pounded.
"Arthur wanted to go to the police. Daniel refused. They argued.
Melissa was there. And I saw something I wish I could forget.""
A long silence.
Then my father said:
"Daniel had a gun.""
Lily suddenly covered her ears.
Claire stopped the recording.
I knelt beside her.
"It's okay, sweetheart.""
She shook her head.
"Grandpa told me Daniel hurt him.""
I swallowed.
"Did you see what happened?""
Lily nodded slowly.
"I was hiding behind the curtains.""
My chest tightened.
"Did you see Daniel shoot Arthur?""
She looked down.
"No.""
I waited.
"I heard a noise. Then Grandpa fell. Melissa told me to close my eyes. Daniel said he would take care of everything.""
I felt sick.
Claire restarted the recording.
My father's voice continued.
"I don't know whether Daniel intended to kill Arthur. But I know what happened afterward. He told everyone Arthur had suffered a sudden medical emergency.""
The recording paused.
Then my father spoke again.
"And when I confronted him, he threatened to make sure you would suffer the same fate if I exposed him.""
I covered my mouth.
My father had known Daniel was dangerous.
He had been trying to protect me.
But he hadn't been able to tell me the truth.
The recording continued.
"Nia, I have placed the original financial records somewhere Daniel will never find them. They are not in the country house. They are not in the bank.""
I leaned closer.
"They are in the one place he believes belongs entirely to him.""
Then the recording ended.
I stared at the screen.
"The one place he believes belongs entirely to him.""
Claire frowned.
"Your house?""
I shook my head.
"No. He knows about the house.""
I thought about the anniversary dinner.
The bracelet.
The forged documents.
The missing money.
Then I remembered something.
Daniel had always refused to let me enter his home office.
He claimed it contained confidential company records.
Even after we married, he kept it locked.
One evening, I'd asked him why.
He'd kissed my forehead and said, "Some things are better left to the professionals.""
I suddenly understood.
His office.
That was where the records were.
I looked at Lily.
"Do you know anything about your grandfather's death?""
She nodded.
"He told me Daniel would say he fell down the stairs.""
My stomach dropped.
"Why?""
"Because that's what Daniel said after it happened.""
I held her hand.
"Did you tell anyone?""
She shook her head.
"Grandpa said I should wait until someone believed me.""
I pulled her into my arms.
"I believe you.""
For the first time, she began crying.
Not quietly.
Not carefully.
She cried like a child who had been carrying something too heavy for far too long.
And I held her until the trembling stopped.
An hour later, Mr. Lawson arrived with two investigators.
He listened to the recording twice.
Then he looked at Lily.
"Sweetheart, I need to ask you something. Did you bring the memory card here without anyone knowing?""
Lily nodded.
"Yes.""
"Does Daniel know you're here?""
"No.""
Mr. Lawson exchanged a glance with the investigators.
"We need to get you and your mother somewhere safe.""
I stood.
"Where is Evelyn?""
"She's being transferred to a secure medical facility. We've already contacted her legal representative.""
"Can we get her?""
"Yes.""
I turned toward Lily.
"Would you like to see your mother?""
She nodded immediately.
Mr. Lawson arranged the transfer.
Before we left, he examined the recorder again.
"There are some serious allegations here," he said.
"But we need corroborating evidence before making accusations publicly.""
I nodded.
"What about Daniel's office?""
"That's our next priority.""
I looked at the clock.
It was almost nine.
My phone vibrated.
A message from Daniel.
*Daniel: I know where you are. Bring Lily home. We need to talk.*
I felt my blood turn cold.
Another message followed.
*Daniel: You have until midnight. After that, I stop being reasonable.*
I showed Mr. Lawson.
He immediately contacted the investigators.
Then a third message appeared.
This time, it contained a photograph.
It showed Claire's apartment.
The curtains.
The front door.
And a man standing outside.
I looked at Claire.
She whispered:
"That's my building.""
My phone rang.
Daniel.
I answered.
"How did you get that photograph?""
His voice was calm.
"You're making this unnecessarily difficult, Nia.""
"Stay away from Claire.""
"Then bring Lily to me.""
"No.""
He sighed.
"You're beginning to sound like your father.""
I froze.
Then he said:
"And we both know how that ended.""
The call disconnected.
I stared at the screen.
For the first time, I wasn't simply afraid of losing my marriage, my money, or my home.
May you like
I was afraid Daniel was about to repeat history.
And this time, I wasn't going to let him.
