Chapter 7: The Child Daniel Never Told Me About
I couldn't move.
For six years, I had believed Daniel and I were building a family together.
We had discussed children. We had even chosen names.
Daniel had always said he wanted a daughter.
He used to tell me he'd teach her to ride a bicycle, buy her too many Christmas presents, and embarrass her when she brought her first boyfriend home.
Sometimes, when I asked when we would start trying, he'd kiss my forehead and say, "Soon, sweetheart. Let's get our finances settled first.""
I'd believed him.
Now Olivia was telling me he had a child.
A child he'd hidden from me.
"Olivia," I said carefully, "I need you to explain exactly what you mean.""
She sniffed.
"I don't know everything. But Melissa came to my apartment tonight. She was furious.""
"Why?""
"Because I kept the photograph.""
"What photograph?""
"The one she left. It shows your father standing beside a little girl. Maybe six or seven years old.""
My stomach tightened.
"Do you recognize the child?""
"No. But there's something written on the back.""
"What?""
Olivia hesitated.
"Daniel's handwriting. It says, 'Our daughter, before everything changed.''"
I closed my eyes.
Our daughter.
Those two words seemed to echo inside my head.
"Are you sure it says that?""
"Yes.""
"Send me the photograph.""
"I will. But Nia, there's something else.""
I waited.
"Melissa told me that if Daniel found out I still had the photograph, he'd make sure I never saw daylight again.""
Claire immediately took my phone from my hand.
"Olivia, listen to me. Do not go anywhere. Do not meet Melissa or Daniel. We're going to arrange for someone to help you.""
Olivia began crying.
"I don't know who to trust.""
Claire's voice softened.
"Then trust us for now.""
The call ended.
Less than a minute later, a photograph arrived.
I opened it.
My father stood beside a little girl with dark curly hair. His arm rested protectively around her shoulders.
The child was smiling.
Behind them was the familiar stone entrance of my father's old country property.
I recognized the place immediately.
But I didn't recognize the girl.
I turned the photograph over.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Our daughter, before everything changed.
Beneath it was a date.
September 2016.
I stared at the date.
That was three years before I met Daniel.
"Claire?""
She looked over my shoulder.
"Yes?""
"Do you remember when I told you my father spent six months living at his country property before he died?""
She nodded.
"He said he needed some peace after retiring.""
I shook my head.
"That's what he told me. But I remember something else.""
"What?""
"One Christmas, I visited him unexpectedly. There were children's toys in the guest room.""
Claire frowned.
"You never mentioned that.""
"Because he told me they belonged to a neighbor's child.""
I enlarged the photograph.
The little girl had a small silver bracelet around her wrist.
A bracelet with a tiny engraved heart.
Something about it felt familiar.
Then I remembered.
My father had once given me an identical bracelet when I was eight.
I still had it somewhere in my jewelry box.
I felt my breathing quicken.
"Claire, I need to speak to Olivia again.""
The next morning, we met Olivia at a lawyer's office.
She arrived wearing sunglasses and a large black coat. Her hands trembled as she placed a small envelope on the desk.
"I brought everything.""
Inside were photographs, printed messages, and a medical appointment card.
I picked up the card.
The patient's name was:
*Lily Carter.*
The appointment date was three weeks earlier.
The clinic's address was in Connecticut.
I looked at Olivia.
"Who is Lily?""
Olivia swallowed.
"Daniel's daughter.""
"With whom?""
"His first wife, Evelyn.""
My heart sank.
"Then why did you tell me he had hidden a child?""
"Because he told me Lily was dead.""
I stared at her.
"What?""
Olivia began crying.
"He said she died when she was very young. He told me Evelyn had been unstable after losing her. That's why I never questioned anything.""
Claire leaned forward.
"How old is Lily now?""
"Thirteen.""
Thirteen.
A child who had supposedly died years ago.
I looked at the medical card again.
"Why was she at the clinic?""
Olivia shook her head.
"I don't know. But Melissa told me that Lily was the reason Daniel kept sending money to Evelyn.""
I felt a chill.
"Is she alive?""
Olivia nodded.
"Yes. I saw her once.""
"Where?""
"At a private residence in Connecticut. Daniel took me there last year. He told me it was a family friend's house.""
I stared at her.
"You met his daughter and didn't know?""
"I didn't know who she was. He introduced her as someone else's child.""
Claire placed both hands on the table.
"Olivia, did Daniel ever mention Nia's father?""
Olivia looked at me.
Then she slowly nodded.
"He said your father had promised to protect Lily.""
I felt my stomach drop.
My father.
He had been protecting Daniel's daughter?
Or Evelyn's?
Olivia opened another envelope.
There was a handwritten note inside.
It was addressed to my father.
The signature at the bottom belonged to Evelyn.
I recognized the name.
The note contained only three sentences.
Please don't let Daniel take her again.
She has already lost one home.
You promised she would be safe with you.
My eyes filled with tears.
I looked at Olivia.
"Where is Lily now?""
Olivia shook her head.
"I don't know.""
Then she whispered:
"But I think Melissa does.""
At that exact moment, my phone rang.
Daniel.
I answered.
"What do you want?""
His voice was unusually calm.
"I hear you've been asking about my daughter.""
I froze.
Claire stood immediately.
Daniel continued.
"Stay away from Lily, Nia.""
I tightened my grip on the phone.
"Why? Because she's alive?""
There was a pause.
Then Daniel said:
"Because if you find out who her real father is, you'll understand why your father spent the last years of his life protecting her.""
The call ended.
May you like
And I realized that the biggest secret in my marriage might not have been another woman.
It might have been another family.
