Chapter 5: The Inheritance Daniel Married Me For
I didn't touch the flash drive immediately.
I stared at Rachel.
"What did I inherit?""
She looked toward the window.
"Your father's estate.""
My father had died four years before I met Daniel.
He had been a quiet man who worked as a civil engineer for most of his life. He wasn't wealthy in the way people imagined wealthy men to be. He drove the same old Volvo for twelve years and complained whenever I bought him expensive Christmas presents.
But he had been careful with money.
He owned several commercial properties, a small investment portfolio, and a construction company he'd eventually passed to a trusted business partner.
When he died, I inherited the remaining assets.
Daniel had helped me manage everything.
At least, that's what I'd believed.
He attended meetings with my accountant. He reviewed documents with the estate lawyer. He explained investment options when I felt overwhelmed.
He had even told me not to worry about the money.
"Your father worked hard for you," he'd said.
"I'll make sure you never have to struggle.""
I remembered crying in his arms that night.
Now those words sounded different.
I looked at Rachel.
"What exactly did my father leave me?""
"Do you remember a company called Westbridge Commercial?""
I nodded.
"That was one of my father's investments.""
"Your father owned sixty percent of it. After his death, those shares were transferred to you.""
I frowned.
"I thought the company was sold.""
"It wasn't.""
Rachel opened another folder.
"Daniel approached Westbridge's managing partner approximately six months after your wedding. He offered to restructure several properties through Carter Holdings.""
I scanned the paperwork.
There were references to valuations, asset transfers, and management agreements.
I didn't understand all the legal language.
But I recognized my name.
Again.
My signature appeared beneath a document authorizing the transfer of my shares into a holding company.
I felt sick.
"I never signed this.""
Rachel nodded.
"I know.""
"How do you know?""
"Because I was the one who prepared the original paperwork. Daniel told me to leave the signature section blank until he received the final authorization.""
I looked at her.
"And then?""
"He told me you'd signed it.""
"Did you see me?""
"No.""
"Then why did you accept it?""
Rachel's eyes filled with regret.
"Because I trusted him. We all did.""
She pulled another document from the envelope.
It was a valuation report.
I recognized the company name immediately.
Westbridge Commercial.
The estimated value was $3.8 million.
My mouth fell open.
"That's impossible.""
Rachel nodded.
"Your father's properties appreciated significantly. The company also acquired two additional commercial buildings before his death.""
I stared at the numbers.
Daniel had told me the inheritance was worth less than half that amount.
He'd said the property market had weakened.
He'd encouraged me to place the money into a long-term investment account that he could help manage.
I had trusted him.
"How much of it does he control now?""
Rachel didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she slid another sheet across the table.
It showed the ownership structure of three companies.
At the top was Westbridge Commercial.
Below it was Carter Holdings.
And below that was a company registered in Delaware.
The ultimate beneficiary was listed as a private trust.
I read the name.
*Evelyn Carter Family Trust.*
My hands went cold.
"Evelyn?""
Rachel nodded.
"Melissa established it two years ago.""
"Why would Daniel put my inheritance into a trust for his first wife's family?""
"Because he didn't put it there directly. He used several companies to make the transfers look like ordinary business transactions.""
I pushed the papers away.
"How much?""
Rachel looked at me.
"Approximately $2.6 million has been moved through the structure.""
I covered my mouth.
The money I'd believed was safely invested.
The properties my father had spent decades building.
The future he had worked so hard to give me.
All of it had become part of Daniel's arrangement.
"Why would he do this?""
Rachel leaned back.
"Because he knew you wouldn't question him. You loved him.""
I looked down.
A tear landed on the edge of the valuation report.
Rachel continued.
"There was another reason. Your father had a business partner named Thomas Reed.""
I wiped my cheek.
"I know Thomas. He attended my father's funeral.""
"He was also the person who helped Daniel establish the first holding company.""
I stared at her.
"You're saying my father's partner helped him steal from me?""
"Not exactly. Thomas signed several documents believing they were legitimate restructuring agreements. But after he discovered what Daniel was doing, he started asking questions.""
"What happened?""
"He died in a car accident.""
I went still.
"When?""
"Three months after Daniel transferred the first major property.""
I looked at Rachel.
"Was it an accident?""
She shook her head.
"I don't know. But Daniel was terrified when he learned Thomas had kept copies of the original records.""
My hands trembled.
"Where are those copies?""
Rachel hesitated.
"That's what I've been trying to find.""
I glanced at the flash drive.
"What's on it?""
"An audio recording from a meeting between Daniel and Melissa. I made it before I left the company.""
She took out her laptop.
"Listen carefully.""
The recording began with the sound of a door closing.
Then Daniel's voice.
"She's not going to suspect anything.""
Melissa laughed.
"You're sure?""
"Of course. Nia trusts me with everything.""
A pause.
Then Melissa spoke.
"What about Evelyn?""
Daniel sighed.
"She'll get her money. She always gets her money.""
"That's not what I'm worried about. She's asking questions again.""
"Then give her what she wants.""
"She wants the original deeds.""
"She can't have them.""
Melissa's voice became sharper.
"Daniel, you promised her.""
"I promised a lot of things. That doesn't mean I have to deliver.""
There was a rustling sound.
Then Melissa asked a question that made my stomach turn.
"And what happens when Nia finds out?""
Daniel laughed.
"By the time Nia finds out, she'll have signed everything away.""
"You're sure she'll sign?""
"She signed the last three documents without reading them.""
I closed my eyes.
The recording continued.
Melissa said, "And if she refuses?""
Daniel's voice became colder.
"Then we'll use the separation agreement. Once she leaves the house, everything becomes easier.""
I gripped the edge of the table.
Then came the sentence that changed everything.
"Her father made one mistake," Daniel said.
"He trusted the wrong people. I'm not making that mistake.""
Melissa asked, "What about the inheritance clause?""
Daniel paused.
"That's why I married her.""
The recording ended.
For several seconds, neither Rachel nor I spoke.
I felt as though someone had reached inside my chest and removed something.
Six years.
Six years of birthdays, Christmas mornings, whispered promises, hospital visits, and quiet evenings.
All built on a lie.
Rachel closed her laptop.
"I'm sorry.""
I shook my head.
"How long have you known?""
"About the inheritance? Since the first transfer.""
"And you said nothing?""
Her face tightened.
"I was afraid.""
"Of him?""
She nodded.
"He threatened to destroy my career. He told me he'd make sure no company in the industry would ever hire me again.""
I looked at her.
"And you let him?""
Rachel lowered her eyes.
"I made a mistake. I've spent the last year trying to fix it.""
I took a breath.
"Then help me fix it.""
She looked surprised.
"What?""
"I need every document you have. Every email. Every account number. Everything.""
Rachel nodded slowly.
"There's someone else you need to speak to.""
"Who?""
"Your father's estate attorney.""
I frowned.
"Mr. Lawson?""
"Yes. He was the only person who refused to approve the original transfer.""
I remembered Mr. Lawson.
He had been present during the estate settlement. He'd always seemed uncomfortable whenever Daniel interrupted our conversations.
At the time, I'd assumed he simply disliked Daniel.
Rachel continued.
"He contacted me last month. He said your father had left a sealed instruction that was supposed to be delivered to you personally.""
My heart skipped.
"What instruction?""
"I don't know. But Daniel found out about it. That's why he accelerated the separation agreement.""
I stared at her.
"Where is it?""
"Mr. Lawson has it.""
I stood so quickly that my chair scraped against the floor.
"Then I'm going to see him.""
Rachel caught my wrist.
"Wait.""
I turned.
Her expression was suddenly serious.
"There's something else about that recording.""
"What?""
"The part about Evelyn getting her money.""
I frowned.
"What about it?""
Rachel swallowed.
"Daniel wasn't paying Evelyn because he felt guilty.""
"Then why?""
"Because Evelyn has been threatening to expose him.""
I stared at her.
Rachel lowered her voice.
"She has the original ownership documents. And she knows something about your father's death that Daniel doesn't want anyone investigating.""
Before I could respond, my phone rang.
Daniel.
I declined the call.
It rang again.
Then a message appeared.
*Daniel: I know you've been meeting Rachel. You need to stop before you destroy everything.*
A second message followed.
*Daniel: Your father left you something you don't understand. Ask Lawson what happened to the original will.*
I looked up at Rachel.
She had gone pale.
"What?"" I asked.
Rachel slowly closed the folder.
"That's impossible.""
"What is?""
She stared at my phone.
"Daniel shouldn't know about the sealed instruction.""
I felt my heartbeat quicken.
May you like
Then she whispered:
"Unless he already has someone inside Mr. Lawson's office.""
