Chapter 8: The Little Girl in My Father's Photograph
I spent the next hour trying to make sense of Daniel's words.
If you find out who her real father is.
Lily was supposedly his daughter.
He had admitted it.
But why would he say that discovering her real father would change everything?
Unless Daniel wasn't her father.
Or unless the truth was far more complicated.
I looked at Evelyn's note again.
Please don't let Daniel take her again.
That single sentence told me something important.
At some point, Daniel had taken Lily away from her mother.
And my father had intervened.
"Mr. Lawson needs to see this," I said.
Claire nodded.
"We should also contact the authorities.""
Olivia looked frightened.
"Please don't involve the police yet.""
I turned toward her.
"Why?""
"Because Melissa told me that Lily's medical records were being changed. She said if anyone started investigating, Daniel would claim Evelyn was mentally unfit to care for her.""
I stared at her.
"How do you know?""
"Because I heard them arguing.""
She wiped her eyes.
"Daniel said Evelyn had already signed everything. Melissa told him that a judge would never believe Evelyn if she tried to challenge him.""
My stomach tightened.
A pattern.
Again.
A woman accused of being unstable.
A signature that wasn't hers.
A child caught in the middle.
Daniel was repeating the same strategy.
Only this time, the victim was thirteen years old.
I called Mr. Lawson.
He listened without interrupting.
When I finished, he said, "Bring the photograph and Evelyn's note to my office.""
"Do you know Lily?""
He hesitated.
"I believe I know more about her than you realize.""
An hour later, Mr. Lawson examined the photograph beneath his desk lamp.
He turned it over.
Then he sat very still.
"Your father kept this.""
I nodded.
"Do you know the little girl?""
He removed his glasses.
"Yes.""
"Who is she?""
"Her name is Lily Whitmore.""
I looked at him.
"Whitmore?""
"Arthur Whitmore was her biological grandfather.""
I frowned.
"But Daniel said she was his daughter.""
"Daniel was married to Evelyn. He helped raise Lily for several years.""
"Then why did he take her?""
Mr. Lawson opened a filing cabinet.
"Because Arthur and Daniel had a disagreement over the ownership of Westbridge Commercial.""
He placed a document on the desk.
It was an old custody agreement.
I scanned the names.
Evelyn Carter.
Daniel Carter.
Lily Whitmore.
Then I noticed something.
Daniel wasn't listed as the biological father.
He was listed as the child's legal guardian during the marriage.
I looked up.
"So Lily isn't his daughter?""
Mr. Lawson shook his head.
"No.""
"Then why did he tell me she was?""
"Because he wanted to keep you from asking questions.""
I felt anger rising.
"What questions?""
Mr. Lawson turned another page.
"Arthur had a daughter named Evelyn. After Arthur's business collapsed, Daniel became involved in a bitter dispute over the family assets. Lily was caught in the middle.""
I stared at him.
"Why was my father involved?""
"Because your father was Lily's godfather.""
I stopped breathing.
My father.
The man who had told me to be kind to everyone.
The man who had taught me that family wasn't always defined by blood.
He had been protecting this little girl.
Mr. Lawson continued.
"After Daniel and Evelyn separated, Daniel attempted to gain control over several assets held in Lily's name. Your father helped Evelyn challenge those transfers.""
"Did he succeed?""
"Partially.""
I leaned forward.
"What happened to Lily?""
"She was placed under Evelyn's care. But Daniel retained access through an arrangement involving the family's property trust.""
I looked at the document again.
"So he could still see her?""
"Yes.""
"Why did Evelyn hide?""
Mr. Lawson sighed.
"Because she discovered that Daniel was using Lily's identity to establish accounts connected to the trust.""
I felt sick.
A child had been used as a financial instrument.
"How much money?""
"Approximately $900,000.""
I stared.
"Nine hundred thousand dollars?""
"Money that was supposed to belong to Lily when she reached adulthood.""
Claire shook her head.
"This is unbelievable.""
Mr. Lawson looked at me.
"Your father believed Daniel intended to use your inheritance to cover the missing funds.""
I felt a terrible realization settle over me.
Daniel hadn't married me only for my father's money.
He had married me because my inheritance could help him hide the money he'd already stolen from a child.
My father had discovered the scheme.
And he'd tried to stop it.
I looked at the photograph.
"Where is Evelyn now?""
Mr. Lawson opened his computer.
"I have an address for the rehabilitation facility.""
"Then we're going there.""
He shook his head.
"Not yet.""
"Why?""
"Because if Daniel believes we're looking for Evelyn, he may move Lily.""
I stood.
"He has already taken enough from her.""
Mr. Lawson looked at me for a long moment.
Then he opened another drawer.
"I have something your father left specifically for this situation.""
He removed a sealed envelope.
My name was written across it.
I recognized the handwriting.
Inside was a single sheet.
My dear Nia,
If you have reached this point, you have probably discovered that Daniel's business arrangements were never what he claimed.
There is a child involved. Her name is Lily.
I want you to understand that she is innocent.
I promised her mother that I would protect her if anything happened to me.
But there is something I never told you.
Lily is not just Arthur's granddaughter.
I stopped.
My eyes moved to the next line.
She is the rightful beneficiary of the original Westbridge estate.
I looked at Mr. Lawson.
"What does that mean?""
He answered quietly.
"It means that the money Daniel stole from your father's company wasn't yours to begin with.""
I stared at him.
"Then whose was it?""
"Lily's.""
The room went silent.
My father had left me an inheritance.
But hidden beneath that inheritance was someone else's future.
And Daniel had been using my marriage to steal it.
I folded the letter.
"Where is the original ledger?""
Mr. Lawson looked at me.
"That's what we're trying to find.""
I shook my head.
"No. My father knew exactly where it was.""
I remembered the line in the letter.
Look where you first learned to keep your secrets.
I closed my eyes.
My childhood bedroom.
The little wooden cabinet.
The old jewelry box.
The place where I'd hidden my diary when I was twelve.
I looked at Claire.
"My father's house.""
Mr. Lawson frowned.
"Your father's country property?""
I nodded.
"He used to tell me that the safest place to hide something was somewhere everyone thought they already knew.""
Mr. Lawson slowly stood.
"Then we should go there.""
Before we could leave, my phone rang.
An unfamiliar woman spoke.
"Is this Nia Carter?""
"Yes.""
"My name is Evelyn Whitmore.""
My heart stopped.
"Are you Lily's mother?""
A soft sob came through the phone.
"Yes.""
"Where is your daughter?""
Evelyn's voice broke.
"She's with Daniel.""
I stood.
"What?""
"He came to the facility this morning. He said he had legal authority to take her.""
"Did he?""
"No.""
"Then why did they let him?""
Evelyn began crying.
"Because he showed them a document with my signature.""
I closed my eyes.
Another forged signature.
Another woman being robbed of her rights.
Then Evelyn whispered:
"Nia, there's something else you need to know. Daniel didn't take Lily because of the money.""
May you like
"Why did he take her?""
"Because she remembers what happened to Arthur.""
