Chapter 12: The Photograph That Exposed My Husband

Daniel moved toward the photograph.

I reached it first.

He grabbed my arm.

"Put it down.""

I pulled away.

"What's this?""

"Nothing.""

"Why does it say the night we finished it?""

He lunged for the paper.

I stepped back and held it behind me.

"Daniel, what happened to my father?""

His expression changed.

Not anger.

Not irritation.

Fear.

For the first time, I saw genuine fear in his eyes.

"Give me the photograph, Nia.""

"No.""

He stared at me.

"You don't understand what you're looking at.""

"Then explain it.""

He ran a hand through his hair.

"Your father was involved in things that could have destroyed everyone.""

"He was trying to stop you.""

"He was trying to take everything from me.""

I looked at the photograph.

It showed Daniel standing beside my father outside a private medical facility.

The date was written on the back.

Four years earlier.

The same evening my father had died.

My stomach dropped.

"You were with him that night.""

Daniel said nothing.

"You told me you were in London.""

He looked away.

I felt the room spinning.

"You lied about where you were.""

"Nia, listen.""

"No. You listen.""

I held up the photograph.

"You were with my father the night he died.""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"He called me.""

"Why?""

"To make a deal.""

"What deal?""

He stared at me.

"He offered to give me the original Westbridge records in exchange for your safety.""

My heart pounded.

"And you accepted?""

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"Your father never trusted anyone.""

"Did you hurt him?""

He looked at me.

Then he said something I would never forget.

"I didn't have to.""

My blood turned cold.

"What does that mean?""

"He was already sick. He was already dying.""

I stared at him.

"You're saying you watched him die?""

Daniel didn't answer.

Instead, he walked toward the desk.

"He had a heart condition. He knew it. He collapsed during our argument.""

I felt tears burning my eyes.

"And you did nothing?""

Daniel's expression hardened.

"I called for help.""

"How long did you wait?""

Silence.

"Daniel, how long?""

He looked at the floor.

"Long enough.""

My knees weakened.

The man I'd married had watched my father die.

Then he'd returned home and held me while I cried at the funeral.

He'd kissed my forehead.

He'd told me my father would always be watching over us.

I felt physically sick.

"You monster.""

His face twisted.

"Don't pretend you understand what I was dealing with.""

I stared at him.

"You let me bury my father believing he'd died peacefully.""

"He was going to destroy my life.""

"He was my father!""

Daniel slammed his hand against the desk.

"And I was your husband!""

The words echoed through the office.

I stepped backward.

For a moment, neither of us moved.

Then Daniel noticed the small recording device beneath my jacket.

His expression changed.

He reached for me.

I pushed the chair between us.

"Don't touch me.""

He kicked the chair aside.

I ran toward the door.

But he reached it first.

He locked it.

My heart began racing.

"Open the door.""

"We're going to finish this conversation.""

"Open it, Daniel!""

He held out his hand.

"Give me the photograph.""

I looked at the window.

It was closed.

The room seemed suddenly very small.

Then I remembered the investigators.

They were outside.

I only needed to keep him talking.

"Why did you marry me?""

Daniel gave a bitter laugh.

"You really want to know?""

"Yes.""

"Because your father trusted me.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"He introduced us.""

"Exactly.""

Daniel walked toward the desk.

"Your father believed I was a respectable businessman. He thought marrying you would give me a reason to become part of the family.""

"And you used that.""

"Of course.""

I felt something inside me break.

"Did you ever love me?""

For the first time, he looked uncertain.

"That doesn't matter.""

"It matters to me.""

He turned away.

"I loved the life we had.""

I shook my head.

"That's not the same thing.""

He didn't answer.

I looked at the painting.

The crooked frame.

The hidden ledger.

Everything my father had tried to protect.

"Where is the original ledger?""

Daniel laughed.

"You'll never find it.""

"Your office is the only place you trust.""

He looked at me sharply.

I had said too much.

His eyes moved toward the painting.

Then back to me.

"You've been here before.""

"Yes.""

"You know.""

I said nothing.

He walked to the painting and removed it from the wall.

Behind it was a small metal safe.

My breath caught.

He entered a code.

The safe opened.

Inside were several documents and a black leather ledger.

I recognized the initials on the cover.

*W.C.*

Westbridge Commercial.

Daniel removed the ledger.

"This is what your father died protecting.""

I stared at it.

"Give it to me.""

He smiled.

"Why would I do that?""

"Because it's over.""

He laughed.

"No, Nia. It's only over when I say it is.""

He opened the ledger.

Then he pulled out a folded document.

"This is the original beneficiary declaration. It proves that your father transferred the Westbridge shares to me.""

I looked at the paper.

Something seemed wrong.

The date.

The signature.

The handwriting.

It was all too familiar.

Then I noticed a small handwritten note at the bottom.

My father's initials.

And beneath them:

*VOID UPON DEATH OF BENEFICIARY.*

I looked at Daniel.

"Who is the beneficiary?""

He smiled.

"You.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"Your father transferred the shares into your name. I was only the administrator.""

I stared at him.

"Then why did you steal the money?""

His smile disappeared.

"Because your father changed the agreement.""

I looked at the document again.

My father had left me the controlling interest.

Daniel had never owned the estate.

He had only managed it.

And he'd spent years pretending otherwise.

I took a step forward.

"You never owned anything.""

Daniel's expression turned vicious.

"Watch your mouth.""

"You stole from me because you couldn't stand the idea that you were only managing someone else's money.""

He slammed the ledger shut.

"You think money is the point?""

"Isn't it?""

"No!""

His voice cracked.

"Your father humiliated me. Arthur treated me like an employee. Evelyn looked at me like I was nothing. And then you walked into my life with everything I had spent years trying to build.""

I stared at him.

"So you decided to take it.""

"I deserved it.""

I shook my head.

"No. You wanted it.""

The office door suddenly shook.

A voice shouted from the other side.

"Police! Open the door!""

Daniel froze.

He looked at me.

Then at the ledger.

I took one step toward the door.

He grabbed the ledger and moved toward the safe.

"Daniel, don't!""

He pulled a small bottle from his desk drawer.

Liquid spilled across the papers.

My heart stopped.

"You're going to burn it?""

He struck a lighter.

But before the flame could reach the documents, the door burst open.

Two officers entered.

"Drop it!""

Daniel turned.

The lighter fell from his hand.

The bottle shattered.

One officer grabbed his arm while another secured the ledger.

Daniel struggled.

"She's lying! She's been manipulating everything!""

I stood against the desk, shaking.

An officer approached me.

"Mrs. Carter, are you injured?""

I shook my head.

Then Daniel looked directly at me.

His face was red.

His voice was low.

"You think you've won?""

I said nothing.

He was handcuffed.

As the officers led him away, he stopped at the doorway.

"Ask your father what he did with the original shares, Nia.""

I frowned.

"What are you talking about?""

Daniel smiled bitterly.

"That ledger isn't the only copy.""

Then he was gone.

At the station, Mr. Lawson confirmed that the recording from my jacket had captured Daniel admitting he had been present when my father collapsed.

The original ledger was secured.

The forged documents were collected.

And the officers had enough evidence to begin investigating the financial transfers and the circumstances surrounding Arthur's death.

But I couldn't stop thinking about Daniel's final words.

Ask your father what he did with the original shares.

At 11:47 p.m., Mr. Lawson approached me with a document he'd found inside the ledger.

It was a letter dated two days before my father's death.

I opened it.

The first sentence made my hands tremble.

My darling Nia, there is one truth I have kept from you because I wanted you to have a normal life.

I continued reading.

You were never supposed to inherit the Westbridge estate alone.

You and another child were named equal beneficiaries.

I looked up.

"Another child?""

Mr. Lawson nodded slowly.

I turned the page.

There was a name.

A name I'd heard many times over the past few days.

*LILY WHITMORE.*

But beneath it was another line.

*Additional beneficiary: NIA CARTER.*

And beside both names was a final handwritten instruction.

Neither beneficiary may claim their inheritance until the identity of Arthur Whitmore's surviving heir has been confirmed.

I looked at Mr. Lawson.

"Arthur's surviving heir is Lily.""

He shook his head.

"That's what we believed.""

"Then who else could there be?""

He placed another photograph on the table.

It showed my father holding a newborn baby.

On the back, he'd written:

The child we lost was never lost.

My breath caught.

Mr. Lawson looked at me.

"Nia, I think there's another person your father was trying to protect.""

I stared at the photograph.

And then I recognized the bracelet on the baby's wrist.

It was the same little silver bracelet I had worn as a child.

The same one my mother had told me was lost when I was born.

My hands began to shake.

May you like

Because suddenly, I wasn't sure Daniel had been hiding only money, a mistress, and another family's child.

He might have been hiding the truth about my own birth.
